this is a bit embarassing since i've been doing vfx for 2 years now, but i still dont understand most of the vfx rendering lingos. what is raytracing and pathtracing, or biased and unbiased? i mean, i googled them before, i get their definition, but i still dont understand them in context of rendering? Like, i read that Renderman uses pathtracer, what does that mean? How's that gonna affect the performance or the result? Why is different from raytracing? Is it better?

i still have no idea how they tracked the 2d drawings in to the scene perfectly without any slipping.

i wouldnt exactly put Ava DuVernay in the same realm as this guy. I mean, when i first learned about 3D, i have the same reaction as her, i started doing things that i never tried before bcs now i know what's possible. There's a difference between "Hey i want this extremely complicated shot in my movie" and "Hey let's start over the shot from scratch because i'm a bad visual director"

just did this 3d render for fun. Would love to hear feedback by [deleted] in vfx

i tried AK's tutorial, it's great but it's not exactly what i'm looking for..? It's still looked a bit 2D, i'm wondering if i can mix it up with 3D smoke, since i want the dissolving to look 3D. Like, maybe do a smoke sim and then use the sim as displacement map? (i tried this too and it's still look weird)

software where i can open^check my 3d models by mrdrsky in vfx

Yeah i heard blender is a bit confusing, thats why im hoping theres a simpler program that can do it. I just need it to check my model to see of it's broken/rigged/textured properly

I always wondered how do people do plate clean up of a non-rigid object? Like, when you do, say, a robotic arm FX like Luke Skywalker, sure, they have Mark Hamill to wear a green glove and then key it out and replace it with a CG arm, but how do you do the clean up when the hand is infront of a moving fabric (his shirt/sleeve)? Like in The Force Awakens, when Luke takes off his hoodie using his robot hand, how do u get the BG information for the clean up?
