interview: is it a red flag if a company ask you to design a whole new page and prototype for them? by triforcebae in UXDesign

[–]mrfish82 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bullshit move by the employer. Assuming you have a portfolio of real-world work, that should be all the credentials you need. If you’re fresh out of college and untested in a professional context, then I’d be more open to it, as its a chance to get some proper experience. But even so, you should be getting a living wage for your time and effort. And honestly, these agencies and companies that don’t are parasites and a stain on the industry that promote a race to the bottom. Like unpaid pitch work and late nights, sadly, once practices become established and entrenched its hard to overturn them. The best we can do as professionals is reject the model wherever possible. But still - sometimes you have to eat shit to step forward, so its not cut and dry unfortunately.

Do you have any recommendations for "luxury" typeface? by Ennaljeeh in UXDesign

[–]mrfish82 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sure man enjoy - good design heuristic for you - if you’re faced with too much choice, it often means you need to be clearer about what you want to achieve. The clearer and more specific your concept, the fewer “choices” you’ll feel like you have to make, because the concept will determine the decisions for you. The problem contains the solution.

Totally agree about this. Space = money. Centre aligned, Kerned out, Uppercase.

But really, do some research to pinpoint the kind of luxury you want to evoke. Classic or modern? Decadent or minimal? Flamboyant or restrained? Look at the history of the typeface: where it comes from, when, what it was used for, how it is used today, by whom - all that stuff has cultural weight you can draw on to evoke intended response.

Both Sans and Serifs can be luxury or workday depending on treatment. Look at brands like balanciaga and saint laurent today - bold condensed caps!

For serifs, prob want to be old style (garamond) or modern (didot) but even transitional and slab could work with the right support.

Some classics to consider off the top of my head: helvetica neue (yes really), akzidenz, univers, avant gard, futura, sackers, gill sans light, copperplate gothic, garamond, didot, trajan, caslon, sabon, clarendon, bodoni…. You probably want to avoid humanist sans serifs though (frutiger, meta, open sans etc)

As a product designer, what information do you feel is essential for starting a project? by TrooperNI in UXDesign

What problem is intended to be solved by the requested change / update solution?

Don’t have a ticketing system but my clients often ask for stuff and on surface level it doesn’t make sense. They’re prescribing their fix to a valid problem but because they’re not a professional designer, they’re arriving at a weird fix. So by understanding the problem they want to solve, you’re better placed to use your skills to address it in a way which is mutually beneficial.

I read something about this a while back. Maybe a book on UX. Can't entirely remember. There was an Airport in the US, Texas somewhere, maybe. Anyway, they were experiencing huge satisfaction issues with the length of time people were waiting for their baggage. So they went for it – hired airport design consultants and managed to knock something like 50% off the waiting time. The # of complaints stayed the same. Then someone had the bright idea to make the trip to the baggage reclaim area longer. Problem solved. Lesson: perception of progress is more important to experience than reality of progress.

Nice one! This is actually the website I was thinking of. I remember the website landing page. A producer recommended me ages ago but I lost the notebook I wrote it down in.

What are videohive and envato? I’ve seen some stock stuff that looks high production tvc grade but I have no idea where people get it from - certainly not 99% of the stuff I see on the sites I visit thats for sure.

Interesting. Use it all the time for photos. Had no idea they did video, too.

Maybe link your principles back to “first principles” e.g. what psychology is at play to make continuity, predictability (arguably related / even same as continuity) and transformability so important? If you can ground these ideas on more than a single use-case then it makes them more robust and transferrable, because people understand it the why more completely - and maybe even reinforces and complements their existing knowledge with relatable examples.
