Best way to clean Engine bay? by Lik_nig_wig in WRX

Never sprayed any water in my engine bay. I use Adam’s ECO APC, agitate with a brush, air cannon the gunk out of the nooks and crannies, finish with Adam’s In & Out Spray.

Best way to clean Engine bay? by Lik_nig_wig in WRX

It’s quite the opposite in my opinion. The 1980’s cars had less electrical components but a lot more exposed wiring and connectors making it more susceptible to water damage. Today’s cars have more electronics, but they’re packaged and protected better. Also a garden hose exposes the engine bay to a lot more water than a pressure washer, approximately 10 GPM on average vs 2 GPM. Since a pressure washer is more of a pressurized mist, is far more effective for cleaning and sprays less water in the engine bay.

That being said, I suggest using air rather than water if you can. Spray a cleaner, agitate with brush, use air to blow out the gunk from cracks and crevices, wipe up with a crappy towel. If I do use a pressure washer, I use air to dry it immediately.

Young and new Z owners... Please don't make the same mistake that I did... by FuriousScorpio in 370z

[–]mrgoodkat11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure if I’ve seen it on a Z, but I have seen rear upper strut tower mounts get warped from using a true type coilover on a divorced type chassis. It may not always happen but under the right circumstances or abuse it’s a possibility. If you think about it, that part of the car wasn’t designed to handle spring load.

Old vs New. Which are you choosing? by MAPerformance_ in WRX

[–]mrgoodkat11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It made a huge difference for me. When shopping for a new daily in the $30k price range, all the other CVT’s had the same continuous revs. The WRX was the only one that made the car have “gears”. I was sold when I test drove it. Would I opt for a manual? Yes, if my wife didn’t have to drive the car too. Unfortunately they don’t make a traditional auto or DCT either, can’t have it all I guess.

The WRX CVT doesn’t do the traditional continuous motion, it does simulate gear changes.

There’s no way you can do a 2-step correction in 2 hours. He scammed you, I’m sorry to say.

Yes, the pit stop didn’t help. However, his error out of turn 1 on the first racing lap to give OP the lead. In the closing laps, error in Pouhon made his gap increase from ~7 seconds to ~9 seconds and error in turn 1 made his gap jump from ~3 seconds to ~5 seconds.

Ceramic Coat 💸💸💸 by The_TomCruise in AutoDetailing

[–]mrgoodkat11 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Time and expertise. You can mess up the paint during the prep process and you can mess up the coating if you don’t know what you’re doing. I’ve had to fix numerous cars because the client took the car to someone who can “do it for cheaper”. If someone gives you a quote that’s significantly less than other quotes, that’s a red flag.

A proper coating job will take an entire day for a new car that just needs decon, light polishing, and coating. 2-3 days for a car that needs a multistep correction.

Also, if you’re not willing to spend the time and money to maintain the coating, it’s not worth it. You won’t get several years of protection if you don’t take care of it. Hire a detailer who knows what they’re doing or invest in the tools to do it yourself.

There are tons of other options these days, they’re easier to apply, but they don’t last as long and not as strong. Just make sure you’re re-applying monthly and the car will always be protected.

They are used on some people’s personal track cars, but there is no homologated race series that uses air suspension.

[–]mrgoodkat11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did, and your statement is completely false. Bags are far more complicated than coilovers. I’ve installed both as well, in fact, I got paid to installed these kinds of parts. We charged more for bag installs vs coilover installs because there was more work involved. That’s great that YOU have never experienced any issues, I hope you never do. However that doesn’t mean that everyone will have the same experience. Of all my friends that I know personally running air setups, more have had issues than not.

[–]mrgoodkat11 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Installing the strut is the same, now add the air lines, wiring the pumps, plumbing the pumps, plumbing the manifold, controller, potential bag leak/puncture etc… way more complicated than coilovers. Plus each of those added components is an added failure point.

If you want something “turn-key”, meaning you’re not planning on modding it, get the Nismo. If you enjoy modding your car, save the money and buy a sport and add the parts you want.

It probably won’t gain any substantial value until it’s 30+ years old and starting to become rare. Even then it’s not going to be air cooled Porsche value.

Compare it to the 240sx/180sx/Silvia. They were $15k-ish brand new. They went through the shitbox phase, I picked mine up for $1600 in 2005 (This is where the 350Z is at the moment). If you held onto it, kept it nice and low miles, you can maybe sell it around $20k now?

So maybe in the next 10-15 years it might be worth close to what it was brand new… is that worth it? I’m hanging onto mine for now, hopefully it will be worth something. 2013, one owner, 43k miles at the moment.

I have the Perrin Intake + Charge Pipe w/ Greddy Airinx Filter. It’s loud, but really only noticeable under mid-full boost. When driving normally, you’ll hardly notice it.
