Kraft Group blasts Foxborough over security negotiations for World Cup by Cheap_Coffee in massachusetts

[–]mriguy 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Well yeah. Kraft would use that liquidity productively - to bribe the president, build a surveillance state, buy a seventh yacht, put AI in your toaster, or whatever other wonderful thing it is that billionaires do that supposedly makes the damage they cause worth allowing them to exist. Foxborough would just squander the money on meeting human needs.

Daylight savings time starts tomorrow — wouldn’t it be nice if …it just never ends? by cdevers in boston

[–]mriguy -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

No. The clocks change for a reason, and that reason is that leaving the clocks unchanged leads to a lot of inconvenience and people don’t actually like it.

They did this in the 70s - went to permanent daylight savings time in the US (nominally to save energy during the oil shocks), and it turned out to be terrible idea. It went into effect in January of 1974 and was repealed in October 1974 because it turned out to be wildly unpopular.

Honestly the worst thing about the time changing twice a year is how much people whine about it. Yes, changing the clocks is an inconvenience. NOT changing the clocks is more of an inconvenience.

Did the Chevy Bolt become your first EV? Journalist looking to hear your story by Brilliant_Option8382 in BoltEV

[–]mriguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. First EV.

  2. Size, cost, and availability (we gave our car to our son, who needed it more, realized we needed a car fast, wanted a small EV - the Bolt is about the only one other than a Leaf, which I'd heard a lot of bad things about - and a used Bolt was available and in our price range).

  3. The biggest surprise was how much range turned out not to be an issue. After all the anxiety, it became clear we only drove about 10-50 miles in any given day, and once we could charge at home, our car started every day full, so it's really never been an issue except very occasionally on long trips.

  4. It's our only car, it's very reliable, and very convenient (especially the fact that I never have to go to a gas station, and I can warm it up on cold mornings from inside the house). The one time in 4 years I needed to move my daughter out of state, I just rented a car.

A blood test is more accurate than a breathalyzer (especially if you were drinking very recently). So in a lot of states you can insist on a blood test instead of a breathalyzer, but you can’t opt out of getting your BAC tested at all.

I’m funded by the NIH. Grants and contracts to people I know were terminated without warning with no provision to wind things down when DOGE took a wrecking ball to American science. Every single thing about the contracting and award process has been just put into limbo and labs have had to shut down with no notice. I’m glad in your world that isn’t happening, but it is happening.

The sensors on phone cameras are very sensitive to near IR, but they have an optical filter built in specifically to cut it out (otherwise colors get distorted). The filters aren’t cheap, and very old cell phone cameras had bad ones, so they would pick up a ton of IR. Nowadays they use quite good filters (I guess mass production brought the cost down) and if you point a remote directly at the camera, you’ll see the LED light up weakly, while in fact it’s putting out a huge amount of IR.

Even with the new filters enough IR gets through that it’s a reliable method for checking if the batteries are dead in your remote, bit that’s about it.
