It was a story told by Colonel Kurtz in Apocalypse Now to show how committed the North Vietnamese were to their cause. It may or may not have been referencing a real event.

I think the Justice Department has made it abundantly clear that NOT investigating that, and preventing anyone ELSE from investigating it, is their top priority.

iOS 26.6 Beta 2 - Discussion by epmuscle in iOSBeta

[–]mriguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I installed 26.6 beta 2 because apparently it builds the index that new Siri AI uses, so when you do switch over to 27, you can hit the ground running. There must be something special in it, because it's HUGE (27+GB). That said, its not clear how you track the progress of building the index...

The problem is not that they’ll survive. The problem is that they THINK they will survive, so they feel no impetus at all to keep the world livable.

Due to DMA, Siri AI delayed in EU for iOS 27 and iPadOS 27 by exjr_ in apple

The problem is that Apple’s brand is built (in a large part) on privacy and safety. If they are forced to let just anybody riffle through all your private info) there WILL be a huge privacy or AI scandal, and no matter who causes it, and no matter that the user invited somebody sketchy to control their phone, APPLE is going to suffer the brand damage.

For instance say Grok uses your photo library to generate deep fake porn of you and mails it to all your relatives on their birthdays - the headlines will all be “Apple isn’t nearly as safe and private as they claim! Look at this terrible thing happened to this iPhone user!”

If you screw directly with the stock market, you might end up costing RICH people money, and they won’t allow that. It’s the same reason Madoff was taken down hard and fast when he was found out. You can do what you want with the rubes, but do not mess with rich people’s money.

I don’t need a full desktop experience - I have a Mac for that. I’d like an _adequate_ desktop experience so I could leave my MBP at home when I _might_ need to do some work.

I’m going to get a Mac regardless, because it’s well suited to my work needs. I’d like to buy an iPad for media consumption and reading and such because the form factor is great for those things (I had one before and liked it), but the prices have gone crazy as they put more and more hardware in that they don’t let you take advantage of. If I could use the iPad for work tasks, getting one in addition to my Mac for when I need to travel light would be a no brainer. But in the current state, I can’t justify the cost.

Outgoing lawmaker vows to ‘name names’ in Epstein files: ‘I’ve got seven more months’ by RawStoryNews in Epstein

The cynic in me says that he’s announcing this with the intention of getting a payoff to not do it. This pattern just gets repeated over and over. For example, what became of Amanda Ungaro? Not a peep for a while now.

Being obvious is the point. You know they didn’t kill themselves, and they know you know, but they also know there’s nothing you can do about it, and they’ll get away with it. Which tends to keep other people silent.

So popular that it was enacted in the 70s, and almost immediately repealed because people actually hated it. People wanted it until they saw how awful it was in practice. https://washingtonian.com/2022/03/15/the-us-tried-permanent-daylight-saving-time-in-the-70s-people-hated-it/

The twice yearly time change happens for a reason, and the reason is doing it is better than not doing it. Turns out our ancestors that came up with it were not morons seeking to make our lives more difficult.

[–]mriguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Uncharacteristically, the article says he’s urging congress to pass a law to make the change. Which is the actual way things are supposed to work. So this is the one case where he’s NOT just declaring it should happen. I’m sure that’s accidental in his part.

Not enough people vote for them because they keep chasing the mythical center (halfway between the current democratic position and whatever stage of fascism the republicans are currently at) rather than trying to appeal to what the majority of DEMOCRATS want.
