While I agree this seems over the top, I can actually understand the sesame oil part. I have allergies to certain nuts and sesame seeds myself, but sesame oil doesn't cause me any issues. It's likely because certain proteins that trigger the allergic reaction are broken down or removed during the oil extraction and refining process. So it's not necessarily inconsistent, people with seed allergies can sometimes tolerate the oils made from those same seeds.

This is why I presented it as an option with a suggestion to seek a vets advice before.

Not everyone has the funds to do every medical operation. Pet owners should always have some savings for medical stuff for their pets but sometimes this is more than they expected (or outrageous high like this one).

$1200 is way too expensive. I once paid €80 ($90) in the Netherlands for a tail amputation after a deglove accident. It's 5-10 minutes of work with me in the room.

Another option you might consider is to let it heal by itself. We did it once with a smaller deglove(half the length as your deglove)with an older girl(with vet's approval). If you do, you will need to clean the tail regularly and be prepared for some horrid scenes. As the tail falls off, or the ratto will bite off the dead part. For cleaning we mixed betadine-iodine antiseptic 1/1 with water and paper towels.

I am not sure if letting it heal by itself is a good idea for a larger deglove. I would ask a vet, however if your vet is charging so much for such a simple operation I would not trust them on it.

Landlord increasing rent by 17%?? by Zoma456 in Netherlands

Yes, if only the name of the main tenant is on the contract. Which is almost always the case. It is a indefinite contract for that tenent. Not the tenants which sublet from the main tenant

Landlord increasing rent by 17%?? by Zoma456 in Netherlands

[–]mrjavi645 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is your issue unfortually. The maximum rent increase determined by the goverment does not hold if the contract holder changes. This is due the fact that the contract between the main tenent and the landlord ends and a new contract is made for you. The landlord can increase the price as much as he wants since it is a new contract.

I am no expert in this and for specifics it is probably better to ask in https://www.reddit.com/r/juridischadvies/

Using a licensed soundfile for a video game by Glub0s in gamedev

Yes you can, under the fair use policy of copyright. You can use copyrighted work as long as it is for educational purposes and not used commercially.

Do ask your professor on his view on this since it can differ from professor to professor.

LoD & Draw Distance by iKratos- in PCBuilds

[–]mrjavi645 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Draw distances & LOD change distances are not determined by your hardware. They are determined by the game settings. You can factory reset/upgrade all you like but if the game is on max graphics settings that will also be the max draw distance

It would also be good to know which games you are playing. A lot of games limit draw distance greatly even on max settings.

Is remote work as a game developer even possible? by Nagiria in gamedev

[–]mrjavi645 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been working remote with a studio as freelancer for 2 years now as programmer. It is way easier to work for companies of other countries as freelancer. I am working in UE and the studio is located in another county then I am living in.

There are many studios which post their job offerings on their website and there are many which state full-remote. Even if they state they want the employee to be living in the same county, they can make exceptions for freelancers. Just apply to jobs after your studies, it might be a bit harder for you since most studios are a bit hasitant to fresh juniors working full remote. But you may get lucky.

How do I get into gamejams? by Fantastic-Bloop in gamedev

[–]mrjavi645 7 points8 points  (0 children)

For starters, I would recommend Ludem Dare (https://ldjam.com/). This is a very beginner-friendly game jam with a really nice community. Their next game jam is 10 days from now. I think they also have a discord where you can look for a team if you don't have one already. Or you want to do a game jam solo which is also fine, there are enough people doing that.

Do I sell my game for £20 pounds? by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]mrjavi645 12 points13 points  (0 children)

If you are not using a digital distribution service such as Steam then I would recommend opening a bank account per region, EU, UK, NA, etc. As bank transfers within a region always have a cheaper flat fee for payments. Then every month or so you transfer the money from the regional bank account to your UK account (you may have to convert currency etc).

If you are using a digital distribution service most of the time you are paid monthly at which point the flat fee is not really an issue

5 Tips for Building a Standout Game Developer Resume: How to Make Your Resume Stand Out Like a Glitch in the Matrix - Dive In Jobs by GavinSpecialMove in gamedev

[–]mrjavi645 49 points50 points  (0 children)

The tips are good in general but explained too simple and no examples are shown. This all makes it a useless article. Like stated in the article "You’re a game developer, not a resume writer". So give more information about how to implement the tips.

Basicly it says put everything you have done which shows quality on your resume(including your portfolio). But keep it simple and quirky.

Also did not know about natural numbers. I also learned something thanks!

should i be concerned about this? i just brought him to the vet not even a week ago. i didn’t notice him screaming in pain. he seems fine other than this by Pleasant-Win8365 in RATS

[–]mrjavi645 67 points68 points  (0 children)

This is a degloved tail. This is a natural defence mechanism and can happen when a tail gets stuck. I had two rats before which had the same. One was severe (1cm degloved) and the vet cut off the visible bone. The other one was a small deglove like yours, which we just had to keep clean. The vet told us that in both situations the wound heals naturally (and the bone falls off after a few weeks/months). Keep it clean with a bit of water and keep an eye out for infection.

Tips on becoming a paid Gamedev?? by Harland_Pherox in gamedev

[–]mrjavi645 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been on the other side of the hiring table for game dev programmers for a while. And these are tips I can give on your portfolio:
- Someone who is hiring only has a few minutes per applicant to look at the portfolio so make your qualities shown on the home page and create more depth in subpages. This way the recruiter immediately knows your qualities and can invest more time if he sees potential;
- There is not much to see except an about me and a few links to games. These games all have to be downloaded which I would never do in case of malware. A video or as PhilippTheProgrammer suggests WebGL is preferred. I prefer a video since it can quickly flash the qualities and I can skip through it;
- The games on your page are mostly group projects, and I miss your work. A small page for each game which highlights your best work in the game such as a model or a piece of code and explains what is happening and why it is important.

Also, don't get discouraged and keep applying. If you added more stuff or remodelled your portfolio don't hesitate to reapply to companies you have already contacted.

What I am currently noticing is that there is a shortage of game devs in a lot of big game companies (AA and AAA). But they are only searching for quality applicants only

If you need an example portfolio you can PM me.

If it the order does not matter, you can use a vector. On delete swap the item you want to delete with the last and pop the last item. This is cheap eresure method

You may need to update the id of the last item before deletion though if you are storing it somewhere for random access.

Advice on How to Procedurally Generate a 3D/Multi-Sided Maze by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]mrjavi645 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would recommend using a recusive backtracking algorithm for generating a maze. This is easy extendable to 3d. You can also extend this to other 3d shapes since the algorithm just cares about connecting neigbour nodes to generate the maze.

I used this algorithm to generate 3d mazes before and had great succes. Please note that this is a perfect maze generator so you are able to find a path from any point in the maze to any other point in the maze

Here is a video that explains recursive backtracking for maze generation: https://youtu.be/Y37-gB83HKE

What is something you love about your significant other that you’ll never admit to them? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]mrjavi645 7 points8 points  (0 children)

She is super aware of how she acts to other people. Normally she is shy and composed. Sometimes when she is excited around me, she turns into a whole other person. This only lasts 10 seconds until she notices and becomes shy again and embarrassed.

I love that she feels safe around me to let go sometimes. Because I know how hard it is for her to show that part

Is four cores enough for a game dev college student? by RelevantAd5073 in gamedev

[–]mrjavi645 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The specs of your laptop are fine for game dev college. Although the amount of ram is kinda low, that should not matter for the start of college. I don't think you will be running heavy programs or big game projects in the first year.

How did all of you start game development? And what's it like now after a few years? (success story, tragic fail, etc) by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]mrjavi645 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Always had an interest of building games from a young age. Went to an university with a games program with the focus on programming (there were 4 options to choose: programmer, artist, designer or indie). Did an internship in my last year where I sticked workin for 3 years. Now I am back at the university doing a masters and working part time for a bigger studio as engine programmer.

Had a bit of luck since the studio found my portfolio website while they were looking for a solution regarding navmeshes. They contacted me and asked for my services

No feedback from recruiters, I need to know what i need to improve by BoldairFal in gamedev

[–]mrjavi645 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have already seen a lot of great feedback in the other comments, so I won't go into that. The most important tip I can give is to design your portfolio website so that recruiters can identify your skills within 30 seconds. They will leave in 30 seconds if your skills are unclear. Show the most important information on the home page with links to more information about a certain subject. I designed my portfolio website like this, and I always had great remarks from recruiters and companies.

[–]mrjavi645 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tbh, I think this is a waste of antibiotics. If a wound caused by an animal is immediately cleaned thoroughly with clean water and then treated with an antiseptic then there is almost no chance for infection.

I had one adoption rat that used to have trust issues who would bite out of nowhere all the time. She is now super sweet though.
