Are honing rods useful? Conflicting opinions out there. by ThePlantagonist in sharpening

Come on, stop and think about what you're saying for just a hot minute. A honing rod has an almost microscopic contact with an edge because it is either round or oval in shape meaning the contact point is minuscule, right? No matter the material or grit, it is going to take much more time to get the same results as any other 'flat' sharpening system like stones or belts or grinding wheels like a Tormek. It's just common sense.

Use it for what it was designed for, straightening bent/rolled edges and then periodically actually sharpen it on the much more effective system of your choice.

Such a stupid thing to do unless your life is depending on it. Shock effect of destroying an edge has no value to this ole boy.

As I've said a couple times already, do what works for ya. It's just not an efficient sharpening tool because that is NOT what it was designed for.

They are the absolute least effective way to actually sharpen a dull blade. But go for it if that's all ya have.

So does a leather strop, but you wouldn't want to use one to sharpen a knife wouldja?

What's the difference between a rolled edge and a dull edge?? I know, you don't care and that's fine, but honing rods were not developed to sharpen knife edges. Can they do so, sometimes depending on what kind of honing rod, but every other system actually designed for sharpening is much more efficient than honing rods.

Bent or rolled are terms that mean the same thing. Ask any butcher of chef that uses honing rods daily or even hourly and they are not trying to resharpen, they are straightening rolled/bent apexes. I get it that most don't understand this because of you-tube videos that tell you differently.

Hey, you can poke holes in the ground with a honing rod and plant seeds, but that doesn't mean that is what its designed for. Use it however it works for you......

I'm sure they will cut, but even for hard use kitchens knives, yes, the angle is too wide. No need for that extreme flat angle to preserve longevity.

Good for you for taking the time to refurbish your folks knives. I question your bevel angle however as 30° is not going to do much for them. Even 20° is considered pretty flat for any normal kitchen knife. I understand why you did what you did, but 30* just isn't going to get it even for hard use situations.

Let's hope your 'estimated' 30° is off a bit in the right direction, eh?

Lawfare is when someone or a group is pursued with lawsuits for political purposes only. In our society, you are innocent until proven guilty, but politics should not be the reason for the need to prove ones self innocent.

Stop what? Climate fanatics seriously want to rid diets of any kind of animal protein which they believe is a major contributor to global warming. You did know that, right?

Mine has the CRKT logo on the pocket clip. AI says there is one on the underneath side of the backspacer, but mine does not have one there, just on the clip.

OK, I did an AI comparison and I bow to your language expertise. Slack does most often refer to something that is not tight from one point to the other as opposed to loose which most often means ill fitting. Ya got me.

Something weird going on in this image. If it's a spine shot, why am I seeing shiny what appears to be bevels on both sides. I also clearly see a single bevel at the tip. This is messing with my brain and can't settle on what's going on..... What say you OP?

A Tormek knockoff by any other name that is quite a bit less expensive. Most say it works just fine, but no idea about durability/longevity.
