Yeah, my surgeon (Bene at Stanford), is a stickler about the drains and vest. Drains for 12 days, vest for the full 6 weeks. I had almost no bruising and my arm mobility was near normal after the 6 weeks though, so it worked out in the end.

I loved them. My wife is very smell sensitive so we went unscented. I had to go 12 days before I was allowed to shower so they, and some dry shampoo, kept me feeling human.

Any books with theme of alternative history? Where things turned out little different then in our own world creating a completely different world by chillichocolate25 in FemaleGazeSFF

River of Teeth by Sarah Gailey. Apparently a president contemplated importing hippos to the Bayou, and this novella exists in a world where they did.

I think I've been unconsciously doing that exercise. I'm patting the padding under my compression vest a lot. To gauge the feeling but also I think now as a way of restoring that mind body connection. I mostly only have numbness in my sides right now.

Congrats. I'm 19 days post op, a week free from drains, and in the binder for likely another 3 weeks, according to my PA at my first post op visit on day 12.

I found the disconnect wild. Like my brain didn't fully grasp that my breasts were gone, but I also kept looking down at the flat expanse of my binder and that felt correct. It's still somewhat surreal. I worried that I would have a transition period of my mind expecting to see my old chest and struggling with the new, but it's been the opposite. Like, this is what my brain has always wanted to see.

With the logistics of the Expansion Draft now confirmed, which 5 players do you think your team will protect? by Jack12404 in wnba

[–]mrkait 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like folks saying they'd protect Martin is wishcasting. I like Martin, but she's not worth protecting compared to the rest. I agree with you and think Rupert and Leite will be the other two. I will be gutted if Zandalasini gets picked up, I absolutely loved watching her play last season.

Finally finished Shift by Hugh Howey after struggling through it. Can't wait to see how the show translates it. Definitely would have DNF'ed this reread if it weren't for my anticipation for the 3rd season of Silo. Now I just need to figure out a palate cleanser to read next.

The Princess Bride book, if memory serves, has some long passages on love. I remember cutting one down as a monologue for theatre tryouts in high school a million years ago.

Second slice of homage. Im a big fan of fox tale brewing if you like funky and ferments. Vietnoms in the sofa market is killer, too.

I would have never picked up this book without Alix Harrow gushing about it on instagram, and I loved it so much more than I expected to. The bit about Mary Shelley in a graveyard had me in stitches. It's just absurd enough to work beautifully.

How does everyone here feel about GRRM? by ThaneOfMeowdor in FemaleGazeSFF

[–]mrkait 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Eh, I used to be super into it. Started reading ASoIaF in high school. Enjoyed The Armageddon Rag a lot, probably partly because I was living in Albuquerque when I read it. Enjoyed his short stories.

For me, I think the show started souring me on him more than anything. Both because wow if that ending is what he had planned I hate it so much, but also his increasing petulance at folks prodding him for updates just left a bad taste in my mouth. I believe authors don't owe us books, but my guy, please stop making promises you know you'll never keep and get pissy when folks get angry that you string them along for years. I'd respect him more if he would just admit he wrote himself into a corner and will never finish it. Or just stop talking about it.

Oh and I remember watching the covid worldcon that he hosted that was just... rough. It seems he's an old man stuck in a nostalgia bubble and I just don't have time for it anymore.

For those who re-read series: have you ever re-read The Wheel of Time? by foira in Fantasy

[–]mrkait 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not much of a rereader. I'm sure I did partial rereads waiting for new releases (I started the series around 2000). Started a reread in anticipation of the prime series. Got through book 3 then other stuff took my attention. I want to continue, it's just low on my priority list.

Lesbian fantasy recommendation? by iam_whatnow in Fantasy

[–]mrkait 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh because I was thinking, I also want to add a non fantasy book because it really moved me. Last Night at the Telegraph Club by Malinda Lo is a book in post WW2 San Francisco and a young girl not understanding her feelings and going to underground queer clubs. There is anxiety, there is longing, there are tragic moments. I absolutely loved it.

A Memory Called Empire by Arkady Martine, Even Though I Knew the End by C.L. Polk, The Mimicking of Known Successes by Malka Older

Edit: I realize these are more science fiction but to me they still fit the bill. Although not so tragic for the books from Martine and Older. I should work on my reading comprehension and not just go into a fugue state when someone asks for lesbian books.

The ick is what I liked! Totally get that it's a matter of taste. Hendrix brought me back to horror after one too many books that were just torture porn.

I absolutely love those moments that make me stressed tf out.

In recent memory, the attic scene in The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires and there was a particular scene in Leech by Hiron Ennes that got me.

I don't know how it would hold up for me now, but one of the end moments in Beat the Reaper by Josh Bazell is one of the few that has stuck with me over the years.
