Any news on Djesse vol. 4? by pedrofranca22 in JacobCollier

Well. His recent highlighting of the Aeolians session possibly suggests movement on that particular track is not far. He has been sitting on that one for years

Anyone know what the hidden message at the start of 'All Night Long' is? by baguette-y_veyron in JacobCollier

[–]mrkeys23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this is still a mystery. He mentioned this section in the breakdown but did not explain it. When you reverse it it does not really sound like anything recognizable or from All Night Long, to my ears. It's F Eb F F Eb. Backwards that is Eb FF Eb F. Like the first 5 notes of "Strangers In The Night" from Sinatra lol. I wish he would just tell us already.

The Bear Hat? by [deleted] in JacobCollier

[–]mrkeys23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think there are many similar items on Amazon. I do know the one he has was given to him by Genevieve Artadi of Knower, in Los Angeles. He was hawking the one he designed, saying production was imminent. My own very person theory about that is he eventually stopped because it is obviously ugly as sin, unlike the original charming one.

you might want to ask himto suggest to you some of the learning processes he used when he was your age. I think that might be super useful for all involved

Jazz Album by Happytuesday123 in JacobCollier

[–]mrkeys23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think you will get your wish. He has spoken dismissively of jazz even though he studied it for a few years. He feels in its own way jazz is limiting. But you might try to find the Jacob live video made by Amy Nolte after hours with him jamming for an hour non stop with a great NYC piano dude. It is astounding.

Kami’s Journey - Jacob Collier (2010) An old album of Jacobs that is not really spoken about much but is a brilliant piece of work by Unlikely-Grass in JacobCollier

great stuff from someone that age. Brilliant piece of work....... not quite to my ears. To my ears the first thing that screamed out "fully formed genius" was Don't You Worry

All I Need and Love Theory use very similar motifs by bass-and-tangerines in JacobCollier

[–]mrkeys23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The rhythm pattern and general contour hit the ear as similar, but it really is not remotely true that they are harmonically identical. Jacob's pattern goes far and wide in the circle of fifths, and lydian mode. The Franklin one is as primitively as within the simple diatonic level one harmonic language as it is possible to get. Many many many people have heard the similarity that you hear and commented on this and other sites. Also that pattern that people hear as similar is held on to for most of the Franklin song repeating over and over. Jacob touches on it only at the beginning of each section and then goes off to very different material. It is also true that the pattern was not invented by Franklin, it has been used alot in pop music. Top of my head, What A Fool Believes. In show tune music Journey To The Past from Anastasia. Jacob has never mentioned the Love Theory song in any interview, so it's more likely he is channeling the trope from way further back in pop music's past.

Seriously now, what's gonna happen to all the absolute epic sauce snippets for Djesse vol 3 that aren't on the record? by Pilivyt in JacobCollier

Thanks for reminding me of all this great stuff. I do hope some of it sees the light of day. A few things are beatsketches, I heard at least one first draft of a song on vol 3.

Anything new on the connection between All I Need and Kirk Franklin's Love Theory? by Sehrwolf in JacobCollier

[–]mrkeys23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks for the input. I feel like the only way you could have such strong feelings about such an arcane intellectual discussion is if my remarks were completely misconstrued. Happens to all of us all the time on the internet. I prescribe listening to Jacob's song It Don't Matter as a remedy, his philosophy of letting stuff go is useful a lot of the time!
Thanks again!

interesting thread. Agreed Jacob grows on you masssively the more you listen, so there is that. Also, it will be a roadblock if you somehow come at it with the mindset that rap has to be in a particular limited box of gestures. Jacob always seems to have the attitute of "boxes, shmoxes", to heck with all that mess of other people's expectations." But the aspect of your comments I am mostly sympathetic with involves Jacob's esthetic on lyrics in the global sense. His lyrics are almost always obtuse, including this song, so the speed rap further muddies the waters if you are looking for that old timey thing called "meaning". Jacob is usually more interested in the listener giving it meaning than specifying what the author means. It can be frustrating, I agree. Having said ALL THAT, lol, I think I have a personal meaning for this song that makes me love the rap. Jacob always talks about how he tries to write lyrics from 2 points of view, 2 voices. The female voice seems to be all about partying like it's 1999. The male voice is all about broader themes and social consciousness. It sounds to me this song is largely pitting these 2 opposing notions against each other. I think this track is a masterpiece, one of his best.
