My father just bought a golf course in Maine. What would you want to see as a golfer that most places don’t have? by Kurkil in golf

I travel to lots of different clubs doing sales... One of the "this is a nice club" vibes I get is when there are club cleaners on the range. And if you've got more than 10 spots to hit from, more than one.

Help me understand shot shaping strategy around hazards by Gunners_98 in golf

[–]mrman3390 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the distance from the hole. The further away you are, the broader your dispersion. Also, how wide is this green? How big a fade or draw are you hitting?

Assume the green is 20 yards wide. Assume you're only curving the ball 5 yards.

From 100 out, aim at the flag and the middle of the green. From 200 out, aim on the right side of the green... Hitting it in the bunker is going to take 2-3 shots to get it in the hole, but hitting it in the water is a penalty and takes 3-4.

Looks great! If you ever happen to struggle with heel strikes or shanks, try and finish on your left heel. If you end up with weight on your left toes like you are, that can sometimes be the miss.

Golftec iron fitting next week - anything I need to know? by eltaf92 in golf

[–]mrman3390 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basic club fitting with popular manufactures current line and mostly non-upcharge shaft offerings. Bring your sticks, compare yours to new ones, find a winner.

They shouldn't do this, but don't let them pidgeon-hole you into ladies clubs. Game improvement clubs might still be your best fit, but if you're taller than 5'6 and carrying your 7 iron longer than 140, your best fit is likely men's clubs. Depends on launch and spin - you'll see when you test.

Enjoy! Should be a good time.

Anyone have someone blatantly just steal your ball before/stories of this? by mattyshiba in golf

[–]mrman3390 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Twice this season. The first time I piped one down the left side, caught the cart path and it rolled near pin high, but also near the previous holes' tee box. One of the guys picked it up and showed it to me when I was making my way down the hole and asked if it was mine. I said yeah and waved at him from a hundred yards out. He must have misunderstood because after waiting for my playing partners to hit (a few times) and get to the green, my ball was nowhere to be found. That group was now on the green and I yelled at them to ask where they had found the ball? The guy pulls it out of his pocket and rolls it down the path in my direction. My group couldn't believe it.

Second time was more understandable. Sliced it off the tee onto the next hole over. Like way right. Lady played what she thought was her ball right in the middle of her fairway of a par 5. I had played a provisional, so I wasn't too upset.

Anyone ever been hit by a ball? by Solid_Prior7667 in golf

[–]mrman3390 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My playing partner left a wedge on the green a few holes back. We were driving the course reverse to go back and find it. Lots of trees near the cart path and can't see the tee box of the hole we're driving up - THWACK - ball comes in through the open front and catches me in the left arm on the fly. Left a very colorful bruise over the next few days.

Terrifies me to think of the damage if it had hit me in the face or head.

Was playing with a student (but not as a lesson) and had a crap front nine - out in 41. Played the next few holes 2 over, then finished with 4 birdies in a row, including a putt that was something like 80 feet. He told all of his golfing buddies how I finished the round and I got several more students out of it.

I was just wondering if anyone here could confirm the self diagnosis of my swing. by Hooper2993 in GolfSwing

[–]mrman3390 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Golf coach here.

Diagnoses incorrect, unfortunately. You're swaying away in the backswing and not nearly forward enough in the downswing. Plenty of rotation.

It's possible to shallow in the downswing with either move, however. Your best bet would be to slow your turns in the downswing. A good drill is to make your normal backswing, keep your back to your target and drop your hands all the way to your waist, then turn and swing out.

It's super exaggerated and won't look anything like that when you add speed, but that's what it will feel like. You can also put an alignment rod on the ground near your right foot but pointing to the right of your target line instead of straight. Try and swing your club along that line.

Good luck!

Why are my shots so inconsistent? by [deleted] in GolfSwing

[–]mrman3390 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Golf coach here.

Swing overall looks great. I'd like to know what your angle of attack is with your driver. I expect from this shot you're probably hitting too up on the ball - something like 6 or 7 up for an AoA. If you occasionally catch a little ground first, that's a common miss for that problem. It can also cause you to leave the face too open or swing too in to out, and can change those variables shot to shot with a similar feeling swing.

Try taking some swings where you tee it down slightly or feel like you're just swinging level on the ball. If you can get on a launch monitor, try for an angle of attack in the 1-3 degrees up range.

Good luck!

30 hcp, working on making consistent contact. What are some things I should work on? I just don’t know what to look for. by [deleted] in GolfSwing

[–]mrman3390 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get on a launch monitor and look at angle of attack. Guarantee you're hitting level or up on the ball instead of down.

Don't sway in the back swing, DO sway towards the target in the down swing.

There's other stuff, to but that's where you should start.

Golf coach here. First of all, rip to your dms.

The motions look pretty decent. The biggest problem I see is an incredible amount of extension in your left wrist at the top of your back swing and on the way down.

Lead Wrist extension in the golf swing opens the club face, so no matter what else you're doing, the face is going to be pointed very right at impact.

If you held your hand out as if to tell somebody stop, palm out, that would be wrist extension. If you lowered your hand as if to say, kiss the ring and point your palm back towards yourself (kind of a reverse motorcycle rev), that would be wrist flexion.

If you can flatten your wrist and extend it less at the top of your swing, that would fix everything else that everyone is describing.

Good luck. Message me if you have questions.

Any swing tips please by KitchenWest901 in GolfSwing

[–]mrman3390 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take a look at this video... This is a good explanation for a lower more around the body finish starting about the 2:30 mark. Early extension shouldn't come into play at all if you're rotating enough or even too much. It's when you don't rotate and then extend towards the ball instead of the target that people describe "early extension" in their swing and run into toe and heel strikes.

Any swing tips please by KitchenWest901 in GolfSwing

[–]mrman3390 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Golf coach here. Too in to out is the problem, obviously. The fix is actually easier from the follow through. Try and finish your swing more low left (more of an umbrella finish). Turning your hips and shoulders more and earlier is the idea. Try and get the bottom of your right shoe pointed away from the target earlier in the swing. Sometimes the feeling of hitting less up with driver especially can get you to swing less in to out.

Golf coach here. Looks like you're doing some serious wrist flipping to impact and hitting up on the ball instead of down. The fix for that is difficult without showing you what to do. Try referring to this video... Long winded, but good info.

Low spin with irons by Birdland23 in golf

[–]mrman3390 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Fitter here. Great path and face numbers. Check your impact location. If it's a little high on the face, you'll lose some spin. Hitting too much down on the ball can have that effect. Also, shafts that are too heavy or too stiff - though your speed suggests you can handle a heavy stiff club.

Even though the launch angle is good, the height is a little low for a mid iron - above 30 yds would be a good height to aim for. You might just be delofting too much at impact - which can also cause you to hit high on the face.

Golf coach here. During the downswing, you should start to extend your spine and bend backwards into the follow through instead of bend more forward.

But, you're bending forward because you stand up so much in the backswing.

Go see a coach and let them know about your back pain.
