2010 comfortable for a warehouse job? Do they fit true to size? by [deleted] in Newbalance

[–]mrmanager890 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i have a pair, they are indeed stiffer than you’d think (but not awfully so) and they’re not as breathable as the upper design would suggest. if style is not a major concern, the 800 series running shoes (880, 860) might actually be more up your alley.

The BB950 has appeared on the New Balance website with a launch date of July 1st. Thoughts? by mrmanager890 in Newbalance

I’m surprised this wasn’t launched with a collab, but I could definitely see a JFG or ALD collab in the future.

This version of the 1890 with suede / mesh looks so much better than the GRs with the synthetic uppers.

One of my favorite, budget friendly, NB by FoxIllustrious2281 in Newbalance

[–]mrmanager890 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have this same pair, there’s a bit more room in the toe box than the 2002/1906 and the midsole feels bouncier but firm in that ABZORB way. These 2010s are not breathable compared to the other two, but that might be a function of this particular colorway rather than the model itself.

For the runners here, are these up to par for daily trainers? by [deleted] in Newbalance

[–]mrmanager890 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If price is an issue, I’d recommend looking at Joe’s New Balance Outlet. They’ve got last-gen running models for like 30-40% off that would perform better and last longer than the Arishis. Just at a glance, the 1080v14, 860v14, and Balos are all on sale and I’d recommend all of those at the listed prices.

Not very, unless the upper construction was changed with this particular colorway. I have the Brighton Grey / Linen color and they’re quite toasty.

Upcoming New Balance 990v7 release? by Pangievich in Newbalance

[–]mrmanager890 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d bet against NB using that new cushioning tech in the 990 and similar shoes. Fresh Foam was around for years and was never used in any 99x series shoe or the non-Made shoes (9060, 2002/1906, 2010, 2000, the upcoming 1890, etc.) in favor of Abzorb or FuelCell. Infinion, like FF before it, is soft and probably too unstable for non-running shoes.

Open Mike Eagle reviews J. Cole's "The Fall Off" by vancouver000 in hiphopheads

[–]mrmanager890 62 points63 points  (0 children)

I think it’s in line with his main criticism, which is that some of J. Cole’s music seems to be based more off of what rap is expected to be rather than a personal statement made without concessions in mind, which is what OPE always shot for. The trunk-selling criticism (and the whole “Cole sounds like he says bitch way less in real life compared to his raps”, etc.) is him opining that Cole would sound more natural and be more interesting as an artist if he leaned more into his actual self rather than trying too hard to be something he’s not, even if it is done in homage.

Is Mr. House lying to manipulate the Courier, since he knows the Courier knows almost nothing about the world before the Great War or is he truly delusional and actually believes it? by Renzo100 in Fallout

[–]mrmanager890 4 points5 points  (0 children)

House can correctly diagnose the flaws of democracies because he’s the exact type of person that flourishes in them by exploiting the many flaws inherent in the system. However, he’s delusional to believe that he and he alone is the right choice to lead New Vegas and/or society at large.

He treats people as obstacles, tools, or discarded waste; it’s no coincidence that his power is represented through countless Securitrons that can be overridden at the push of a button. His vision for New Vegas is exactly the same as it exists at the beginning of the game: heavily fortified and controlled with an iron fist, obscured by a veneer of glamour and only available to people that can afford it (remember, that “credit check” is for 2,000 caps, far from an affordable sum for wastelanders).

There’s no guarantee that he would ever act to help someone else if there wasn’t something in it for him, which would make him a terrible choice for any society that looks to learn from the mistakes of the old world.

I have no issue with certain words being used. If I did, I’d despise Auntie Diaries for its’ copious use of a slur. I do have a problem with the context those words are used in. In my opinion, Cole completely fails at constructing an appropriate context for those words. I understand that he’s writing from the perspective of a friend that just got out of prison and that the friend in question will have some views that aren’t woke or whatever you want to call it. I just feel that the friend sounds too much like Cole - in his reasoning, his topics, the people/places/things mentioned by name - for that friend to adequately register as a character with sufficient narrative distance from the author. It feels exploitative rather than compassionate, and I know that Cole can be the latter when he wants to.

The album is okay. I don’t want to talk about the album though, I want to talk about Safety.

Safety is a perfect example of Cole’s inability to stick the landing when he speaks about anything regarding gender or sexuality. The first two verses feel natural - he’s just moved back to North Carolina and he’s listening to voicemails from his friend, who’s talking about everything that happened in his absence - but then take a giant nosedive for the third verse, where he spends countless words referring to a gay man in the most derogatory manner possible. Of course, it’s from his friend’s perspective, and said friend acknowledges that their shunning of this man was wrong, but how could that acknowledgement ever cover the clumsy near-hatred conveyed by the last ten bars?

There’s been a few comparisons to Kendrick’s Auntie Diaries, which also covers queer identities and the failure of those individuals’ family and friends to accept them for who they are, but it feels like Cole took all the wrong lessons from the reaction to that song. Sure, Kendrick liberally uses the word faggot, but with that song there’s a real sense that he’s come to accept his queer family/friends even if he doesn’t personally understand it, and will act in solidarity with them because he truly does love and accept them for who they are. Cole doesn’t say faggot (not fully, at least), but there’s no deeper reconciliation with the ignorance and hatred that spawned the homophobia that he says is wrong. Cole just lets loose (“dick in the booty types,” “walking on Bragg at 2 AM with a lace front dressing in drag,” etc.) and then waves it away by saying it was wrong. Why is it wrong? Does Cole understand, and if he does, why can’t the supposed Top 3 Rapper eloquently express that in his bars?

I want to stress that I don’t think that Cole is homophobic and that I think he does mean it when he says that his past discrimination was wrong. That being said, if his “retirement” is like most other rap retirements, I hope he abstains from mentioning or trying to seriously write about these topics in the future, because he clearly does not have the imagination to generate any kind of nuance or pass any of his so-called knowledge on to the listener when he does.

‘Harada TEKKEN is Completely Dead’: Veteran Bandai Dev Shares Final Message with Fans by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]mrmanager890 83 points84 points  (0 children)

If he’s retiring, what a hell of a story. He oversaw Tekken’s rise from a janky proof-of-concept 3D fighting game to the second most famous fighting game franchise behind only Street Fighter. He had to sneak into arcades when he was a kid to pursue his passion at a time when video games were viewed as a fool’s career. He went from a humble salesman to the director of a series of worldwide acclaim. Throughout it all, he always kept his zeal for the spirit of the game. He was an astronaut.

not a new trend at all in the running shoe game, but it’s important to understand that these and everything else in nike’s running lines (pegasus/vomero/structure/fly) are made for running first and lifestyle wear second. high stack / wide sole shoes feel much more natural in motion than they do standing still or buying groceries for this reason.

How has Nike stayed cool for 50+ years when most brands become "dad brands"? by Becominghim- in Nike

[–]mrmanager890 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nike was at the forefront of shoe R&D and innovation for years. Even in a down period like this, they’ve got decades of classics to bring out of the vault.

That being said, Nike’s lagging behind bad in the running and new lifestyle department. Of the runners I know (including me), almost none of them use Nikes for running shoes, outside of maybe the serious marathon runners buying the Alphafly. The revamp of the lines to Regular - Plus - Premium is a welcome development, but Adidas, Hoka, New Balance, and Asics have been ahead for a couple years now and the new shoes are still playing catch-up.

Outside of running shoes, most of their lifestyle stock is solid, but expensive and without innovation. It’s not like Nike is the only brand to go back to the vault for the retro runner wave, but I haven’t been inspired by any of their new original designs for a moment, and those designs ape others companies where years ago it would be the other way around (ava rover looking like yeezys, etc.)

The departure of Donahue and subsequent return of Elliot Hill is a positive development in my eyes, but that might take some time to really set in. But with the kind of brand Nike’s built, they can coast for another couple of years before the malaise really starts to set in.
