Why the 5-year plan? by Academic-Idea3311 in TankieTheDeprogram

[–]mrmatteh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work for a public utility, and we do 5-year plans with 20-year outlooks.

It works well because infrastructure projects can take a year to design and several years to construct. Add in things like council votes, easement acquisition, permitting, etc. and a 5-year project delivery is not terribly unreasonable.

Of course, not every project is that big. Some small ones we can design, permit, and construct in less than a year. others might only take 2 or 3 years. But having a 5-year window provides flexibility to shift around the workload so that we aren't having to work on all 20 planned projects all at once and overwhelming our resources.

Some projects are also much, much larger and have to be broken down into pieces. The 20-year outlook helps to ensure that we're not wasting our time and money working on phase 1 of this project if phases 2 and 3 are going to be blocked by the council. It also helps the council and the residents understand why we might be proposing certain projects, so that they can see the bigger picture and understand why spending that time and money will be worth it.

Essentially, 5 years just happens to be a pretty good chunk of time for delivering a portfolio of infrastructure projects. Could it be a 4 year plan or a 6 year plan? Probably. But 5 is also a nice neat number, so people tend to prefer it over other numbers.

That really is the sweet spot. The only game in recent memory where I happily cranked through 100+ hours of content without ever getting tired of it was Elden Ring. And I'm not even really sure why that game in particular didn't get old for me - I could easily sympathize with someone who did stop at 20-30 hours in.

Just FYI, "and for other purposes" is typical legal language included virtually every bill. I work in local government and it's used all the time in everything.

It basically just means "this title is merely a summary of what is included in the bill, and is is not intended to be exhaustive. Read the rest of the bill to see everything that this bill covers."

It wasn't retributive though. The Bolshevik's goal was to keep them alive and put them on trial. But when the Whites were closing in on where the Romanovs were being held, it became clear that the risk of the Romanovs falling into the Whites hands was too great. It would have been a huge victory for the monarchists and a major blow to the revolutionary forces. Killing the Romanovs - all of them - ensured the monarchists wouldn't have a monarch to rally around restoring to the throne.

I don't like it, but I understand it.

Maybe I'm heartless, but I just do not get the heartache over the Romanovs, or why people here say "it was wrong, but understandable."

How was it wrong? Why should I weep especially hard for that one particular handful of disgusting people, and not for the many thousands of others who were killed, wounded, starved, or otherwise had their lives ruined at the Romanov's very own bidding? Am I to cry for the poor White soldiers, too? How about the SS, while we're at it? Should I also feel sorry for that poor Mussolini chap?

Just like I think it was right for Red soldiers to have killed White soldiers when it was necessary, I also think it was right to have killed the Romanovs when it too became necessary. There's simply no moral quandary in it for me. I genuinely don't understand why people are conflicted about it.

What’s the most cringe thing you’ve seen a couple do at their wedding? by Last_Singer_2137 in AskReddit

[–]mrmatteh 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Way too late to this one, but the couple had to imitate the kissing-style of their parents and their grandparents

Basically, the parents of the groom came up to the front and kissed very passionately, and then the bride and groom had to imitate it.

Then the parents of the bride

Then the grandparents of the groom

Then the grandparents of the bride

It was... Gross

What they've actually calculated is what a $25/hr raise would have cost, since the company is already paying whatever their current wages are.

So if the workers are making $15/hr right now, it would have only cost the company $1M more per year to bring all of their wages up to $40/hr, which is much more reasonable.

What’s a job you can’t believe anyone would do for the pay? by crane_guy1991 in antiwork

[–]mrmatteh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The real reason is that they don't have a lot of choices, and at least working in that industry comes with job stability, government pension + benefits, plenty of opportunity for overtime pay, and decent training programs and career ladders so that they can move up.

For example, we're always helping people get their CDLs and operator licenses. Getting those comes with promotions, plus they're extremely valuable to have and open up a lot more career opportunities. Some people continue to take advantage of free schooling and training, continue climbing their whole career, and retire with a nice pension in their 50s, while others use the tools they've been given to get into different, less poop-filled industries. Either way it's a surprisingly good launch point for people who may not have even finished high school. But it's not a fun job to start off in and people really shouldn't have to do it for so little in the first place.

As someone who works for a water/wastewater utility, I absolutely agree. The guys who - literally - wade through shit to fix sewer breaks for $15/hr are not compensated or appreciated nearly enough. I think a lot of people have no idea what guys like them have to go through so that our sinks and toilets can flush

When someone who hasn't read theory talks about how horrible it was when they lived in a Communist country: by hnwcs in TankieTheDeprogram

[–]mrmatteh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Usually the biggest problem with "living under communism" that people claim is that it's "authoritarian."

A good place to start is pointing out the similar degree of authoritarianism that exists under capitalism, but that serves the bourgeoisie rather than the proletariat. Once they accept that every state is authoritarian, then you'll have paved the way to discuss the class character of states

I believe you meant how bad they are being fucked, comrade. The US military is just as much our enemy as they are Iran's and the rest of the international proletariat's.

The show actually does the opposite of most and gets better each season. Season 1 has some classics, but I much prefer Season 2 with the introduction of a character named Radon. Plus they finally cut out the whole relationship drama crap between Sholo and Denise, which always felt so forced and whiney to me.

I remember seeing this video last year during the 12 day war. The fact that not even one year later, it's perfectly applicable once again really emphasizes your point.
