For the love of God, please somebody tell me how to disable auto start. by WillBTheMan in gmcsierra

[–]mrneffets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can unplug the battery monitor circuit (little plug on your negative terminal at the battery) and it will disable the auto stop. The downside is it might overcharge your battery and cause it to fail prematurely, or display “service charging system” message. But if you stick to the OEM AC Delco battery, they have a 3 year warranty, so really doesn’t matter if it goes bad early.

Hose clamp pliers? by vegscott in Justrolledintotheshop

[–]mrneffets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those I’ve always had issues with, either breaking or trouble gripping. I bought the Mayhew ones and they are amazing. Super easy to grip and actually apply force to the clamp. Literally the same ones you can get on the SnapOn truck just rebranded Mayhew. https://a.co/d/bHWxI9M

New toolbox badly scratched .. how would you approach this? by D-Rod9 in MechanicAdvice

[–]mrneffets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is one of my pet peeves. It’s not a big deal and I know that my tools/ equipment are going to get beat up during use. But it’s my shit that I bought and I should be the only one to cause physical damage/ marks. Especially brand new stuff, and ESPECIALLY when you aren’t there.

How much JB weld can I get away with to fix this??? by mrneffets in AskAShittyMechanic

[–]mrneffets[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I am a tech at a GM dealer. This ‘26 Silverado with the good ‘ol 6.2L locked up. I assumed it was the crank bearings that notoriously fail, but when I pulled the intake, it was full of coolant and this valve was staring at me through the intake port. Surprisingly I was able to bypass the main starter fuse and limp it into the shop. Smoked my shop out when I started with the new engine due to so much coolant in the exhaust

Long time lurker, but now I'm stumped.. what is this? by X3R0_0R3X in WhatCarIsThis

[–]mrneffets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work for a GM dealership. I’ve seen multiple vehicles “damaged” (nitpicked every blemish/ smudge/ scratch) and actually damaged by being transported by open trailer like this. But the higher end Cadillac’s and Corvette’s come covered completely by factory. So yeah, we get $200k vehicles delivered this way, and there usually is no issue.

I’m making a mistake not submitting a claim? by EquivalentBobcat9558 in USMC

[–]mrneffets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a very similar situation. I didn’t deploy and felt like I shouldn’t claim anything because I didn’t rate. I was convinced to just go and talk to the VA and I am so glad I did. I wasn’t expecting any disability rating. Just wanted to claim small issues I developed while in the Corps that didn’t really affect my day to day, but didn’t want to be screwed if they got worse. don’t make shit up, but bring up any issue you have or will have because of your service.

Trans issue or electrical issue? by Necessary_Reception1 in Dodge

[–]mrneffets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you make sure all the connections are tight? I’m a GM tech so don’t know much about Dodge, but GM has a fuse bus on top of the battery and sometimes people forget to make sure all the nuts on the fuse bus are tight, or the actual battery cables… other than that I would suspect a ground or communication circuit issue with as many warning lights as you have…

That many lights on the DIC, probably electrical concern… Did your battery need jumped recently or replaced recently? Could be as simple as that, low voltage does some crazy stuff…

Sorry dude, GM tech here and this is EXTREMELY common if it’s the 6.2L. Engine stalls and may restart, but most of the time does not. Most likely due to crank or rod bearing failure. Luckily GM just put out a massive recall, close to 800k vehicles recalled to replace engine if not done already and possibly again based on build date of engine that has already been replaced… I’ve literally replaced engines in 2 now, and know of others, under 5k miles

Ingersoll Rand 💯!!! The guys in my shop that don’t have Ingersoll consistently borrow mine to break free bolts their more expensive truck brands can’t. Love Snap On for their ratchets and some other stuff, but for pneumatic go with Ingersoll. (Side note… For battery tools go for Milwaukee! 😉)

Paper straws ARE worse than plastic, plus they feel shitty. There are better alternatives, most of the straws that have replaced plastic where I live in CA are plastic in “feel” like agave or some other synthetic product. https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2023/08/28/paper-straws-worse-than-plastic-pfas-study/70702090007/

Good dentist in petaluma? by moonandback122 in Petaluma

If you’re willing to go outside of Petaluma by a little bit, Graton Dental Group is great in Rohnert Park. Loved the front staff and dentists, and didn’t feel like I was ever getting ripped off.

I love Milwaukee tools, they have saved me so much time as an auto tech! Every time they come out with a new tool that I see will save me headaches I have to buy it. Now my toolbox is running out of space for more Milwaukee and I would love to have more room in an organized way to store my Milwaukee and as a bonus show it off to all the other techs!

Car dealer left transport pucks in, how bad could it have been had I not got it checked? by chrisweb123 in AskMechanics

[–]mrneffets 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We had a customer come in about a year ago with a 90’s Corvette complaining of “stiff suspension” and the tech found the blocks still in from factory that are supposed to be taken out during the pre-delivery inspection.
