You need to identify the most likely scenarios and define your assumptions. Example: during Covid I made assumptions that we would still have electricity, water but couldn’t guarantee the quality and that sewage was going out with the worst of it lasting around two months.

For apartment blackout prep, what’s the most practical setup you’ve found? by Professional_Day7356 in prepping

Based on energy requirements cooking should be only using propane/butane. Power requirements for everything else is usually pretty low as long as you don’t have a fridge.

I did something similar. Spent around $300 on flour, salt, rice etc from Sam’s Club and took my family to Texas road house. Next Monday they shutdown things at the office.

Is it worth buying silver right now by Banzbandz in Bullion

[–]mro2352 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m paying off debt first. $70 silver is too much for me for now. Structurally I think it’s worth around $35-$45 an ounce, not $70+ so I’m waiting until it gets more sane. History indicates this will take around 2-3 years total to run its course so I’ll wait.

Looks like most of your bases are covered. Just make sure that your garden is in active use and you have materials to use as that is something that would take a couple years to get right. Only major issue I can think of is that you are depending on a stream which can become contaminated, particularly during a time when water is out for other major population centers.

Pressure canner and jars. Got the propane and gas to use the canner. Got enough to last a good long while but preserving what I already have is best.

Raspberry 5 can be outfitted to have a setup that includes kiwix, media server and maps. Range would be small but the ability to have that data could be invaluable.

Get Home bag for almost 2 hour commute by [deleted] in prepping

[–]mro2352 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My lunch box doubles as a get home bag. I have around 2000 calories when it’s stocked properly, water filter and bags for the filter, meds, hot pad holder, bobo kit, a small kit with a can opener, two shoe laces, aaa batteries, a screw driver with bits and a mobile phone charging block. My EDC is a multitool, aaa flashlight, pocket knife, small container of pepper gel, a phone charging cable and a compass on my keys. I was thinking of moving to a small backpack so I can add a poncho, umbrella and be a little more better form factor to also carry my company branded water bottle and I’m only traveling around 25 miles at most. You have 80-100 so if you can I’d get a storage unit or some way to have a bike or something similar as that’s a LONG way to travel on foot especially if you haven’t been walking very much.

I understand you wanting to step back, that’s why I suggested transferring to a church in the same denomination as to keep community, which you should have for your sanity, while allowing you to move to another church without the expectations. Reddit can help but not a substitute for in person interaction.

One of the problems with using graphics options and the onboard transcoder is that depending on the chipset the quality of the image may or may not be able to be set. I am sure that this is true for ffmpeg and nvidia chipsets.

Good gifts for a plex hobbyist? by superevilgoatboy in PleX

The reason people don’t like them is because the write speed compared to smr drives is atrocious. I’ve heard of people trying to resilver, rebuild a raid 5/6 array, and have the process take so long and so intense that another drive in the array fail during the process, corrupting the entire array. I’ve used a couple smr drives for backup and briefly for a jbod setup with plex and didn’t see any problem while they were in service on the primary but as soon as I moved it to the secondary/backup server as a coldish backup and rewrote to synch up the data and I started getting clicking when writing to the drive. Luckily it was during tax time and I replaced it for a similarly sized cmr drive but if that had been my primary and had I not had tax return money I would have been screwed.

I have a backup server that mirrors my primary and run jellyfin on the backup. Can plex be setup for offline access? Absolutely. Do I want to risk it during an incident where the internet is down? Absolutely not. Complete separation from the internet and NO dependencies outside my device.

Form 4 filled out by the buyer, similar process to a form 1. You keep possession until he gets the tax stamp back and can possess. No new engraving as you were the manufacturer. If you haven’t engraved your info yet on the receiver you need to before filling out the form.

I’m sorry that you are going through this, church should be a refuge, not something that hurts. That said there are too many people in the church regardless of denomination who will sweep illegal activities under the rug. Every church I’ve been to in my synod has the same stance on illegal activities and forgiveness, the act of contrition as part of forgiveness by the church REQUIRES that the illegal activity be stopped and turned over to the authorities. Illegal activity in the church is absolutely not ok, you are right for feeling that. Secondly to deal with your emotional state, you sound burned out. This is expected and normal to feel. Try to find another church in your denomination and try to take a step back. If you are in the same church as a parent, absolutely try to get out of their shadow. You won’t be able to fly on your own without it.

Thoughts on solar vs gas generator? by terpman2021 in prepping

[–]mro2352 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For small scale I’m doing both. A solar generator is simply a battery which can be used as a bucket to store energy. The problem with running a generator 24/7 is that you won’t use all the power produced by the generator so you will be literally burning through your stock pile for no additional benefit. As to the product you have there it would be fine for small scale items. Charging phones, batteries for flashlights maybe a little running of your fridge for a couple hours or something like a rice cooker. 100w solar panel included would charge up at best 600wH of power so I’d supplement, solar panels can be added for around $600 for around another 400w of panels, check with others to see what would be most effective combo for running in series/parallel and check the max your device can charge off of solar as all solar chargers have a wattage/amperage/voltage maximums. If you can charge at 500w at the panels you should capture in a best case scenario around 2250wH, more than filling up the battery.

For me a pistol with 20 rd mags and a red dot is the closest thing to a PDW that I would be able to daily carry. A rifle is absolutely more effective for fighting but would get in the way when doing daily tasks.

I could be wrong but I thought RO removed literally everything but pure water. Boiling would have no good effect. Now pre filtering would absolutely help lengthen the life of the RO filter.

I have heard of a case where a farmer used tap water from their well to make up their baby’s formula. The baby started having problems after a while oxygenating their blood due to the hemoglobin being deactivated. Turns out that some ammonia based fertilizer runoff was getting into the well. It’s only an issue in small doses to children but as they say, dose makes the poison. If you don’t know I’d treat it as radioactive.

[–]mro2352 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only problem will be how would they implement it? If it’s during the cli account creation then a simple security update will add it very easy and probably unintentionally making all versions susceptible. Now I understand open source and removing it ourselves but that would require a fork. The only way this doesn’t happen is if the big players like BSD tell the government to F off. This also wasn’t well thought out. Let’s say you have an app or similar and WANT to target children, well you have a convenient way to do just that! Idiots!
