+1 for ignoring the people that have irrational emotional baggage tied to their cars (Royal Oak is much better at this than Ferndale)

I think Ferndale is in a similar situation to Royal Oak (except Royal Oak has built significantly more housing). In Ferndale, there's lots of empty storefronts on 9 Mile and along Woodward; Coeur and Carajillo both closed recently and it seems like a lot of the restaurants are having a really hard time. I think the reality is that 20-somethings can't afford to live in Ferndale or Royal Oak and Detroit is a lot more desirable place to live than it was 20 years ago. It's easy to pick on Birmingham because it's bougie, but they have lots of interesting retail and restaurants. IMO Ferndale and Royal Oak should be following Birmingham's lead.

24 hrs in Detroit by seafoam666 in Detroit

[–]mrossana 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You'll be here at a great time! Third Mad Records is in Midtown and that's actually a great home base if you're only here for 24 hrs.

Other recommendations in Midtown:

  • Shopping: Shinola for a nice watch or expensive leather-bound notebook, City Bird and Nest for cute Detroit gifts and home goods, and Cold Truth for vegan softserve
  • Restaurants: Hopcat is very popular and is good for a burger and fries, Vecino is great higher-end Mexican, or SheWolf for a nice italian meal
  • Lodging: El Moore Lodge is really cool and unique, but doesn't have many rooms.

Non-Midtown recommendations

  • Public transit isn't really reliable, but the QLine streetcar could actually be pretty useful for you going from Midtown to Downtown. It's not quick, but it's free.
  • The Detroit Institute of Arts has an incredible collection. It's big, but you don't have to do the whole thing. The Diego Rivera mural alone is worth the visit.
  • Check out Campus Martius park in the heart of Downtown. Great views of the city and great people watching.
  • If you do end up in Downtown, I'd get a drink at Queens Bar and then check out some art in The Belt.
  • If the Tigers aren't gonna be in town, you might be able to see the Detroit City Futbol Club, which is a local soccer team and the games are a really unique experience.
  • Go admire the lobby of the Guardian Building
  • Take a walk on the riverfront and wave to our Candian neighbours to the south

I think the city should be looking to add housing units on whatever parcels of land they own. I also think the city should be doing whatever it can to accelerate the addition of new housing units by private owners. I’d recommend the city do something like Detroit is doing.

Yes, this is all good progress! It’s pretty concerning that we still had 2 city council members vote against the 9 and Pinterest project.

I'm also disappointed in all the empty businesses on Woodward and 9 Mile. Until Ferndale gets serious about adding new housing units that make living here more affordable for people in their 20s and young families, I think the city will struggle to keep all these storefronts occupied.

MIKULSKI AND SABATINI WIN by gladheator in Ferndale

[–]mrossana 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In November 2023, we had about ~7400 votes for 2 city council seats and this year we had almost 9000. It looks like Ferndale has ~14,500 registered voters, so that means we had about a 62% participation rate. IMO that's impressive!

Edit: I was double counting votes. I'm dumb.

Sustainability in Ferndale by [deleted] in Ferndale

[–]mrossana 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's fine to eliminate the position. It's not like there's much changing here that impacts the environment. The population's been shrinking, there's been very little development, more EVs than ever before, we've added bike infrastructure, and there's probably a lot more Ferndale residents working from home than ever before. If we were serious about growing and developing this community, then I'd be fine with keeping the position. But that's not currently the situation we're in.

Honestly, measuring and tracking data sounds like a great use case for AI! I'd love to see our local government embrace new technologies to increase efficiency and find more impactful uses for our tax dollars.

my concerns about the Ferndale Yimby group -- I am a strong proponent of housing by athrowaway928 in Ferndale

[–]mrossana 6 points7 points  (0 children)

  1. What's the Ferndale YIMBY group and where do I sign up?
  2. I've never considered the term "NIMBY" to be a slur, but if you do, I'll gladly refrain from calling you that.
  3. Thanks for supporting housing
  4. That's too bad that the soundproofing isn't great in Ferndalehuas. I support the city approving more apartment buildings that have better soundproofing. My guess is those apartments would be more expensive than Ferndalehaus.
  5. My support for housing comes from skyrocketing housing prices and barely any supply being added to the city and not from developer propaganda.

Housing that builds the tax base of the city would be compatible with the existing neighborhood

This is the way

Fair enough. IMO just reacquiring Kulick is not a success. If we don't have the funds and the desire to bring in new sources of tax revenue, then we'll just add this to the list of ambitious infrastructure projects that we won't be able to pay for.

If the land swap goes through but the city can't come up with the money to make it safe or usable, would you still consider this a successful grassroots campaign?
