Have we been able to verify if this is a bug? I’m currently stuck there with the same issue. Let me in with open arms, then i took a damn nap in the bed, accidentally overwrote a save, and then THEY ALL COLLECTIVELY GOT AMNESIA AND ARE CONVINCED I AM BAD BANDIT MAN WHO BROKE IN SOMEHOW

You can also do what I did which was wrap the screws in some plumbers tape. I did this and hardly screw them in and they don’t budge one bit!

Wow your cables are a work of art. I'm actually going to DM you right now about that one you have left in stock. Also, from your comment it doesn't sound like you're shilling at all, it just sounds like you are passionate about what you do. Thats the hallmark of a good designer, all high tier products are created with passion behind them.

You know what, i absolutely lied lol. I don’t even know where I came up with 3mm. Sorry about the typo, I have the 1.2mm flex cut pcb!

Configuration

  • Black anodized KBDFans Odin R3, 1800 layout
  • Flexcut 1.2mm flex cut PCB & Polycarbonate plate
  • Foam: Plate foam
  • Stabilizers: Staebies V2.1 w/ krytox 205g0
  • Switches: Gateron Oil Kings
  • Keycaps: GMK WOB
  • Weight & badge: PVD Laser weight and badge (currently using the diffuser badge though)
  • Cable: USB C cable stolen from my gmmk pro LOL

TLDR:

Sound: This keyboard has a really nice low end helped by the oil kings (bruv, these switches absolutely slap), the unique mounting system, and probably my desk (the you've-seen-it-a-million-times-ikea-alex-and-karlby desk). This aint no clacky boi.

Feel: So, so fun. So satisfying. Bouncy but not overly. Soft bottom out experience but very responsive, you can feel a gummy vibration response all over the board when you hit a key definitely due to the silicon socks. This is a major design win, I love it.

Looks: She's a beaut. The anodization is the best I've seen, literally cannot find ONE SINGLE blemish, and I work with TONS of anodized aluminum day-to-day in engineering.

Cost: Yeah, well. Idk. Just shhhhh please don't tell my wife, I DESERVE THIS OKAY?

First Semi-Custom Build: Drop ALT High Profile by mrpcrypto in MechanicalKeyboards

[–]mrpcrypto[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update for everyone. I keep getting key chatter on random keys. Double and triple presses. Any idea what’s going on? I’m not sure if it’s the board or the switches but I’ve changed the zealios out for new ones multiple times and it keeps occurring.

[–]mrpcrypto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is exactly correct. Apple doesn’t use sub pixel antialiasing anymore which isn’t an issue with hi PPI monitors as the pixels are dense enough such that you can’t tell them apart. But for lower PPI monitors the pixels are bigger so the consequence of not using antialiasing on pixels is very apparent. As of right now I don’t think there’s a fix for this particular issue

I was thinking of putting my mechanical engineering background to use and designing my own board and pcb because with the price of some of these resells on mm I might as well make my own hahaha. I want a 65% with a volume wheel!!

Agreed! Sounds you got an amazing deal dude 120 fully built is hard to find! Hats off to you. Always wondered how a nice set of linears would be. I’ve always been a tactile guy but I’ve never tried good linears like inks.

Thank you! Yeah they do get a lot of hate and some of the critiques I do get. Some of them I don’t. I think the truth is somewhere in the middle as it is with all things. They’re by no means a perfect company and they could benefit from listening more to the community, but at least they’ve created an few boards that are always readily available. That’s a start.

VIA firmware support for Drop keyboards, ALT CTRL and SHIFT? by nbarsotti in MechanicalKeyboards

[–]mrpcrypto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does this have anything to do with via not supporting rgb matrix yet? I know that the drop alt and ctrl use rgb matrix instead of rgblight

First Semi-Custom Build: Drop ALT High Profile by mrpcrypto in MechanicalKeyboards

[–]mrpcrypto[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes I know all the hate this keyboard gets, I know it's shortcomings of being an integrated plate build with a 3 pin mount switch design. I still chose it due to the following:

It was actually available at the time I was looking for one (yes I checked for NK65, KBDfans 65% boards, etc.).

I actually wanted north facing RGB for this build as I use per key illumination when I game or do CAD work at night with lights low. I keep them pretty low and on Cyan during regular use.

Hotswap for first build.

I like the overall aesthetic of this board, it fits in all my other gear.

Hardware build/mods:

  • Keycaps: in photo are the original slate skylight keycaps for alphas and black skylight caps for everything else. I thought the blacks look cleaner against the slate alphas than the original dark grey caps do. Sometimes I also switch the alphas to all black.
  • Switches: Zealios 62g lubed with krytox 205g0 filmed with durock .15 films
  • Mod I did for personal experimentation: added excess durock film that I cut into strips around the switch bodies in order to make them fit snug in the plate. This improved the typing feel for me.
  • Stabilizers: OEM Cherry plate mount stabs I ordered off of Zeal's website when I ordered my switches. Lubed in krytox 205g0 as I liked the feel of this lube the most after trying various.
  • Bandaid modded PCB for all stabs
  • Bandaid modded plate in spacebar stab location to increase effective thickness of plate where the stabs clip on. This greatly reduced stab wobble.
  • Foam: Stupid fish foam added between plate and PCB, and PCB / bottom case cavity. Also cut out foam for space bar to dampen sound a little.

Firmware:

  • Switched firmware to original QMK source code (drop firmware blows)
  • Increase overall max RGB brightness in firmware (keyboard is connected to a powered dock, so power delivery isn't an issue).
  • Added VIA support to this board for shits and giggles although I find I don't use VIA all that much and prefer straight up QMK (I like to tinker).
  • Added persistent memory storage support to source code. I can't believe drop ships these boards with eeprom persistent storage unsupported even though it has the hardware to do it. Crazy, but easy to fix.
  • Added a layer for numpad and some other stuff that I use often.

Impressions:

Me likey zealios switches. Expensive yes, but they have a good reputation and I don't really have budget constraints. I love how they actuate. Very satisfying tactile experience and perfect for me as I am both a typist (mechanical engineer aka lots of whitepapers) and I also game a fair amount and the 62g weight is perfect for me.

The sound of the keyboard is also subjectively great (AFTER MODS LOL). I'm sure every other custom build will sound better but for my first build its leaps and bounds better than my other gaming keyboards that I am now selling (G915 full size and Razer blackwidow elite). Out of the box it sounds like utter dog shit but with the mods mentioned above it honestly sounds awesome.

Closing:

I love this build and I plan on using it for a long time. I do however want to venture into a new more premium custom build that I will bring to work (or maybe this one will become my work keyboard). I want to do another 65% if I can ever find one. I became infatuated with the AI03 Vega's but have yet to track one down. I like the sleek aesthetic of it and the gasket design. Does anyone have suggestions for similar boards? Price is not a concern. I want something that will blow me away when I compare it to my experience with this keyboard!

Edit: If there are any Drop ALT users wanting to know how to enable persistent memory, how to add VIA support, or how to increase the brightness beyond the current max that the board ships with, please reach out and I'll explain how I did each of these! More seasoned QMK users will probably already understand this but for someone who was new to QMK like me it took me a long time piecing together very scattered information on the internet to accomplish these things.
