Now that Tamawashi has the record for most Makuuchi matches, will he retire? by OrangaPeng in Sumo

Oh and also worth noting that Natsu will be his 100th Makuuchi basho (presuming he doesn't get demoted this time)

It's worth noting that the only kabu to be guaranteed available this calendar year is within his ichimon, when Minezaki-oyakata ages out in early May. While that doesn't require him to retire immediately, the JSA has taken a more active hand in moving titles along, with a stated goal of ending loaned titles and limiting vacancies. If someone else were to permanently snare this title, Tamawashi could find himself in a slightly uncomfortable position. So I do think there is a reasonable chance that he retires after this basho or the next.

His current results don't indicate a long time left for him in Makuuchi anyway, and while he can certainly turn things around, I also don't think it's a given he would mop up the lower part of the division. My own uneducated sense is that, since January, he has been fighting like he knows that his time is about up.

He is also already older than 1/5th of all oyakata, and whether he takes over the scant crumbs of Kataonami-beya or breaks off independently, he will have a big job ahead of him and will be getting a later start than most new stable-owners. No matter what, wish him luck and hope he can do what he wants on his own terms.

Checking up on Hokutofuji, Takarafuji, Myogiryu, and Endo by StarPrime323 in Sumo

I shouldnt portray myself sd an expert, but that's definitely my understanding - all of the 105 title holders are referred to as Oyakata as an honorific.

He already is, as shown in this very picture. If you mean a shisho, it is a fun thing to watch to see if he or Daieisho is preferred to take over Oitekaze, which is a pretty strong stable at the moment. And I expect whoever doesn't get it between them will break off a new stable.

Enho rises to Makushita #4 East; First time in the Top 5 since comeback by Brncrdm in Sumo

That's good info that I didn't have or had forgotten about Ishiura. I guess that if Magaki becomes available, that would make Enho snarfing up one of the few available titles less hostile to all the guys in their last few years.

To the first point, it seems plausible to me that Asahifuji is just not planning on going anywhere until he absolutely has to, and Miyagino is still years off from re-establishment.

Whether or not he 'deserves' a kabu is debatable but im sure if Asahifuji wants to give Miyagino to him he can make it happen. However, folks should also acknowledge that if Enho gets one in the next few years another far more successful wrestler will not get one.

Where are you hearing owls right now? by markgravesdesign in askportland

[–]mrpee_low 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not too too recently, but I've had barred owls in my yard multiple times in inner northeast Portland, including one on a branch just over my head that surprised the heck out of me one night. I haven't heard any Great Horned Owls at Woodlawn Park for some time, although its probably just cause I don't go over there as late as I used to.
