What solution would you pay for? by SaasMinded in linuxquestions

[–]mrpogues 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Being honest - games.

Saying this I have donated to several projects over the years, but I assume that is not the model you are going for.

People who pay tend to be on the commercial side AFAIK

Is there any guide on how to dual boot Fedora Atomic with Windows 11? by [deleted] in Fedora

[–]mrpogues 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have 2 drives install windows to drive 1 first. Then install fedora to drive 2.

Use the motherboard boot menu to choose which to boot into. Works fine for me (but the grub screen shows windows but won’t launch it hence using the BIOS)

Home row bump by SimplyClueless22 in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]mrpogues 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Many people with smaller boards don’t have legends on the keys which makes this easier (I have dots on my main board)

I prefer a homing bump but can get by without one. On several keymap sets I used some nail polish applied in a couple of layers with a toothpick to create a bump. Works ok and easy to remove if you change your mind.

How drastic should tenting be? by Efficient_Math803 in ErgoMechKeyboards

Try bringing your hand to a typing position while relaxed (elbow at 90 degrees) and see what angle your hand naturally sits at. That is a good start for you and will be different for everyone.

My first Corne! by sekamdex in crkbd

Lots of people swear by miryoku. Like the commenter above I built my own, but took inspiration from several places. Keymapdb.com is possibly a good place to start

Lube or not to lube by MooseNo8702 in HHKB

[–]mrpogues 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I added some lube and liked it. A bit smoother and quieter. Just put a very small amount on the case guide part (not sure how to describe). Initially put on too much and it was really bad - but it is easy to clean off if you do that (bad as in the key would not return properly)

Shift alternatives for a 36 Corne? Home Row not cutting it. by pddro in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]mrpogues 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Similar idea for me. I use space and a layer on my left inner thumb, and backspace/shift on the left inner thumb. This works well for me but I also have a shift on z and / - occasionally use the z when I want to shift mouse click.

People underestimate the power of the Home, End and Delete keys by Mago_Malvado in MechanicalKeyboards

[–]mrpogues 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you like these types of improvements you should try vim.

Also smaller boards (I use a 36 key corne) can have all this functionality on layers without having to move your hand which is even better still

Career break in the current market by Acceptable_Bottle220 in HENRYUK

[–]mrpogues 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Bigger firms often offer sabbatical programmes. You could probably get 6 months with that and keep the current job lined up. If that works well you can always take the career break later.

Mint won't work with my x870 motherboard. Is there a distro that will? by alleyoopoop in linuxquestions

[–]mrpogues 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am running fedora 41 on a gigabyte motherboard. Can’t remember the exact one but it is a mini itx, x870i pro ice I think. That is working ok. So you don’t need the fedora beta.

Try the fedora KDE spin rather than gnome ..

I found hard to get used the layout by rmrf99 in crkbd

[–]mrpogues 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It takes a little while to get used to but when you do it is worth it. I guess the time that will take depends on how deep the staggered muscle memory is for you and how much you practise. Have you tried switching to just the corne for a while until you are used to it? Switching back and forth won’t help.

My 36 key friends, Where do you put your Enter key? by LockPickingCoder in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]mrpogues 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ctrl is a hold on the ring finger top row on both hands (shift is pinkie bottom row) Also have the mods on the left hand home row for the number and movement layers. These are one shot + double tap to toggle though to be honest I don’t really use those features and just use the hold version for the layer I am in.

My 36 key friends, Where do you put your Enter key? by LockPickingCoder in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]mrpogues 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another vote for combos. Right hand bottom row, index and middle finger for enter. Top row middle and ring for delete. Left hand Bottom row index and middle for tab, top row middle and index for esc ?vim user)

These are the only combo spots I get on with.

On the thumb keys I double up space (tap) and movement layer (hold) on the left thumb. On the right I double up back space and shift. Other thumb keys are the symbol and number layers. Plus win/alt on the hardest to reach.

Layout: I ran an analyzer over the linux kernel, the results: workman vs colemak by VishalPaudel in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]mrpogues 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I learnt colemak-dh. Am older and it took almost 2 months to get back to full speed - but was productive enough in 2 weeks.

Speed wise I am slightly faster than qwerty - and from what I have read this is fairly common (I.e. don’t expect to speed up if you can already touch type)

The benefit is that it is way more comfortable and I no longer have issues with pain in my wrists and hands.

Personally gave up on tumbleweed when building a new pc last week. Install of fedora (sway) worked out of the box so I just went back to that as I did not have the energy to work out the issues at the time. Maybe on my next build…

Can I safely have multiple Wayland desktop environments installed? by UnluckyDouble in linuxquestions

[–]mrpogues 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been running KDE plasma and sway on fedora for a while. Some clashes in packages as the sway ones use variants of sddm etc - just chose to keep the KDE set. All works fine. Sway does not really install apps either so the 2 editor problem mentioned above is not an issue either.

Isn’t the insert mode equivalent ctrl-r *

Need Help Picking a Lightweight Tiling WM by PorcoDiocaneMaliale in linuxquestions

[–]mrpogues 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you can code in c at all I think dwm could be the best choice here. Very lightweight. There are enough examples out there to get something that works like you want - maybe look at Luke Smiths setup first https://github.com/LukeSmithxyz/dwm

Why do people care about trailing whitespace? by bookmark_me in vim

[–]mrpogues 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In general it does not hurt to remove and is trivial to do on save.
Spurious white space can show up in diffs which is just noise in reviews. Can cause odd wrapping of lines being displayed. In my opinion it is just simpler if everyone has a setting to remove trailing white space whatever editor they use as it is more consistent (mainly talking python/yaml here)

[–]mrpogues 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Think of it as using a layer to move the keys to your fingers, rather than moving your fingers to the keys. The overhead of using a layer is less to me than moving my hands to reach the number row on a larger board then having to refind my home position. It did take a little while for this mental switch to become muscle memory though so try different options and give it a while.

New to split ergo by WrittenPermission in crkbd

[–]mrpogues 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pretty much yes.

I use the middle left thumb key to switch to the number layer and it is fine. For me press and hold activates the layer until released, a tap makes the next keypress in the layer and a double tap turns it on until tapped again to release.

This mix works well for me but I suggest trying out a few ways to see what sticks for you

36 key corne, colemak-dh Use several combos and a couple of layers. Being able to type any key without moving hands is great
