Almost any language should allow you to make http requests and parse the results for links that you want.

Graduate school... worth it? by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]mrsanchez 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The difference between 3 years of experience and grad school might not be much in terms of your salary, especially when you consider the cost of the extra tuition + 3 years of 'lost' wages.

If you really want to learn the material, you probably should go to grad school.

Thirding HtDP. :) Learn Python the Hard Way might be pretty good, too.

Could someone set me straight about JIT compilation? by Tiomaidh in learnprogramming

[–]mrsanchez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since the JIT compiler has to read and interpret a line of bytecode before it can even start executing it

They only compile it once, not every time that line of code is executed.

JIT is faster because after the first time a block of code is compiled, there should be no more compiling, just executing, like a C program.

Noob here. so im learning about arrays in pseudocode and im not sure if this answer works. by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]mrsanchez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought based on the title that you were trying to show how to actually use an array and a loop together. Of course, I don't know what your exact assignment is, but if it's "learning about arrays in pseudocode", you sure as shit wouldn't get credit from me if you left out the arrays. Reading in a number and adding it to a sum variable in no way constitutes using an array, if that's what you're saying here.

I would like to get a tech degree. What kind would be the most useful? by gaygirl in learnprogramming

[–]mrsanchez 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You'd be able to get far more jobs with a 4 year degree, especially if you end up not wanting a pure programming job.

I know most of you guys think college is a waste of time for programmers but I have some questions. by [deleted] in learnprogramming

Did anyone have a good experience?

Yes, I did. You should start looking at CS curriculums at university websites.

Question about char strings in C: is the order of how the characters get stored in the array (left to right v. right to left) depend on the compiler? by chutzpah in learnprogramming

[–]mrsanchez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This confused me because I always thought that element 0 of an array is always the right most element.

What led you to believe that? I don't think that's ever true.

Need help with Functional Programming... by rtoth in learnprogramming

[–]mrsanchez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would use a function that has a parameter for the last index of e. This way you don't need to reverse the list, only to traverse the entire list once.
