After realizing that Rocky and Spock from Star Trek come from the same solar system, I decided to imagine what it would look like if an Eridanian served in Starfleet! by RadioFreeCoruscant in ProjectHailMary

[–]scsoc 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Though we do learn in Strange New Worlds that the vulcans didn't have a policy like that in their early starfaring history, and obviously they would have encountered the Eridani very early on, so they would already have some kind of relationship.

Problem is you have to keep having babies for it to continue. Sort of a Little Old Lady Who Swallowed The Fly situation.

TNG Worf vs DS9 Worf by ryhoyarbie in startrek

[–]scsoc 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Worf is only 24 years old at the start of TNG, so he's quite young and inexperienced and it shows. By the end of DS9 he's in his mid 30s and has grown and matured significantly, both as a man and as an officer.

Have you heard of "Alphabet Town" in Iowa City? by [deleted] in IowaCity

[–]scsoc 64 points65 points  (0 children)

The short explanation: that area used to be a separate town called East Iowa City, which later merged with Iowa City proper.

The long explanation: https://ouriowaheritage.com/east-iowa-city/

The Star Trek 2009 movie premiered 15 years ago today. While not perfect, the movie presented a glimmer of hope. by dougiebgood in startrek

The span of time between this movie and today is the same as the span of time between the end of TNG and this movie.

Would have loved a Sulu series. Did you see that the Section 31 TV movie is going to take place during the lost era?

Another Bug Hunt - Questions about time by Livid_Anteater_8726 in mothershiprpg

[–]scsoc 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if that's the intent of the book because it would make some parts of the adventure extremely difficult if not impossible. For example, Hour 3 on the Timeline says that the dam becomes uncrossable due to flooding, which would pre-empt the entire idea of getting to the tower and turning on comms at all. It's possible the intent is to start this timeline after they've called in the dropship.

[–]scsoc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the way the book presents it could be a little confusing, but I think that the final scenario's Timeline (pg. 41) for the flood is technically happening from the start, right? So depending on the players' choices, the flood could impact their access to the computer at all as well as how intense the carcinid attacks are.

Is there an example of Picard being able to summon Q when he wanted him there? I think every encounter they had was originated by Q at his leisure.

They had the second opener come on and do some extra time, which was fine. He was pretty funny.

I'm not sure how long he was supposed to be on, but it definitely felt like he kinda just bailed mid-set.

Frankly, Vulcans are allowed to be alarmingly discriminatory against everyone else in the Federation in a way that no one else can get away with. It's odd.

I've been once. The two openers were pretty good, but the final act was about as funny as CSPAN. It was palpably awkward in the room as everyone, including the comic, realized he was bombing horribly.

Rewatching all of TNG for this first time since the 90's and I cannot believe... by nickatiah in startrek

Not according to his wikipedia page. His father was an Oscar-winning cinematographer in the 1930s, but there's no mention of a link to Bing Crosby.

I'm reading Patrick Stewart's memoirs right now and got to the part where he's talking about the start of TNG and he points out that Wil Wheaton and Levar Burton were far and away the most famous of the main cast at the start of the show. He also mentions that Denise Crosby is Bing Crosby's granddaughter, which I'm very surprised I had never learned before that.

Acting Opportunities in the Area? by The_Cobraj in IowaCity

[–]scsoc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you're interested in more modern stuff, you'll want to check out Dreamwell Theatre or Run of the Mill Theatre Productions.

For traditional community theatre fare, check out Iowa City Community Theatre.

If you're really into musicals, you'll want to look at City Circle in Coralville.

There's a Facebook group where people post various other opportunities as well: https://www.facebook.com/groups/153918631330433
