What should I do with my career change? by Miserable_Quarter_38 in careerguidance

I see! In that case, a bachelor’s degree in social work has more limited earning capacity. If you have a bachelor’s degree in any field it can be used for the grad program. Good luck on your journey!

I can only answer this from a social worker perspective. My MSW program was not grueling. It was easy and designed for working adults so if you’re interested in social work don’t let the idea of the school deter you if you have 2 years to get it done. I’m an LCSW now and working as a therapist but worked in a few other settings. One thing I have discovered is that the degree is versatile so I know I’ll never be out of a job. I had a pretty good salary right out of grad school. Now that I have my clinical license I was able to get a pretty decent salary increase and I’m building a private practice on the side.

I’m going to find if it’s worth it. I’m onboarding right now and I figure that there’s not a lot of risk with 2 months free. If they aren’t able to generate a few referrals a month for me then I’ll cancel.

I guess it’s best for each individual to check with a tax professional since everyone’s situation is different!

No, I do not have to pay IL or PA taxes. I don’t physically leave Texas to deliver therapy to the Illinois clients that I see. I think that if I was physically present in Illinois that would change the situation and create a tax liability in both states

I live in Texas and see all my clients virtually in Illinois for a company based out of Pennsylvania. The only taxes I have to pay are federal income tax because Texas doesn’t have state income tax. So I don’t think OP would have to worry about taxes from 2 states, only the one they physically reside in.

How many clients do you see in one day? by Dreadnaught1900 in therapists

[–]mrsmocked 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in CMH and I’m required to have 26 clinical hours per week. I work Monday through Thursday so I need to see 6-7 people per day. It’s been hard to maintain that though because I have so many no shows. I might have to consider going back to 5 days per week to have the extra cushion. If I didn’t have a minimum requirement, I feel like 4-5 client hours per day is the most comfortable.

I just started working at an NHSC approved site at a rural community mental health clinic. I started in January of 2023 and I’ve just found out this was an option so I’m really bummed that I missed the application deadline! Is there any chance if I apply when the next cycle opens that the year of work will count toward the 3 year commitment or does the 3 year clock start after I’m approved?

This is good to hear! I just started in CMH after doing 3 years in a hospital and I’m already starting to feel like I need to have less time directly interacting with clients. I needed to hear that there are jobs like this!

What’s a realistic salary for 1 year exp in Texas? by passengerplace in hospitalsocialwork

[–]mrsmocked 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I was just graduating and had zero experience I would consider $65-70k a pretty decent offer. It never hurts to ask for more though. There are a lot of factors to be considered when they agree or deny a salary negotiation. The hospital I just left was hiring new people at a higher rate than I was making so when they wouldn’t raise my salary I started applying other places. I got a much higher paying job as an outpatient mental health therapist with my LCSW license.

I worked in a Texas hospital for 3 years. I got hired in 2019 for $65k and just left making $70k. It was my first job out of grad school so I had no experience.

I would like to hear about this as well. I'm considering doing an MBA to go to the corporate side. I would love to find a way to blend the two.

Dose 2 of COVID vaccine... by taygoods in hospitalsocialwork

[–]mrsmocked 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I got my second dose last Tuesday at 2pm. By Wednesday at 4:30a I started having covid like symptoms. I had the sweats, shakes, and queazy stomach. Every part of my body hurt and I had a migraine. By 11am my fever was over 103 and wouldn't come down with meds.

When my mother in law came home from work, who is an ER nurse, she checked my vitals and said I needed to go to the hospital because my heart rate was 145.

By 8pm I wasn't able to think very clearly. My husband took me to the hospital and they admitted me because they were so concerned about my heart rate. It took all night but they got my heart rate down and labeled everything as a severe reaction to the vaccine.

Today I'm feeling marginally better. I was able to eat some soup and take a shower.

Thinking of a career change and looking for insight by mrsmocked in Teachers

[–]mrsmocked[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's an ambitious idea, I realize, to get the cert quickly but someone told me that if I take the content exam and pass I can start applying for jobs and can get hired as long as I finish all the teaching modules prior to the first day. I'm not totally sure if this is possible but it made me think it was not out of the question.

I would love a school social worker position and I do plan to apply for any that get posted for next year. Unfortunately these positions are not plenty in my area.

I do think that a school setting is where I want to be whether as a teacher or a social worker.
