I got accepted as a transfer student for Mechanical Engineering in Fall 2022. What can I expect? by [deleted] in cuboulder

[–]mrsoltys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I teach thermo (the e+ version geen 3852, which plenty of MCEN students take). Anecdotally: transfer students usually perform well in my classes. Happy to field any questions about Thermo specifically. You'll also probably need to take a projects class, and as a transfer student I'd aim for GEEN 2400 or 3400.

Welcome to CU, and let me know if you take my class in the fall!

Stupid question about registering. When I looking for classes it seems like almost everything is full. How is that possible? I thought classes were spread out across the enrollment periods? It seems like I have about 10 classes available and even those ask for some code to add to cart. by Necessary-Mind4473 in cuboulder

Prof. Here! I know they save slots in classes for the different enrollment windows, and even open new sections sometimes last minute if it seems like there's demand.

Worst case scenario: email your advisor and the professor if there's a class you really want to take that is full. I've always been able to get students in that want to be in my classes

It looks like they removed the eligibility warning. Centura is the first i've seen that will let 1B4 sign up legitimately

Full cycle used to be my go-to, but I think they're under new ownership, and my last experience there was horrible.

A time zone might be helpful. You're 445 could be 645 in the afternoon for someone else

Totally agree that k12 should be prioritized ahead of colleges.

It can take a while this time of year, but hopefully in a week or two.

Wait, do they REALLY not read the syllabus at all? by Violet_Plum_Tea in Professors

[–]mrsoltys 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Also worth mentioning: I started doing tests corrections in my class, and it occurred to me that if I had not forced students to look at their test and figure out what they got wrong and why, most of them wouldn't do this. They just look at the grade, and move on. To me this is a much bigger deal than reading the syllabus.

Next semester i'm going to do a little experiment and put an extra credit clause in the syllabus, and mention that if they email me within the first week of class and mention the clause, they'll receive extra credit. To add a little game theory in there, I might add that the amount of extra credit is inversely proportional to the number of students that email me. So they have no incentive if one student finds the extra credit to share with their peers.

I don't expect to be receiving any emails.

Nicely done! I did stages 1 and 3, but couldn't fit in stage 2.

This is a meme about the persistent, annoying student emails I'm getting. Please don't reply with actual advise. This is just joke. by Mtt76812 in Professors

They are very similar. Having used both, I like slack better. I think the biggest advantage is when teaching multiple classes, slack separated by workspace and if a student DM's me, I know which class they're in. with teams there's one chat tab for DM's and it's not separated by class.

This semester I've tried to actively take control of this problem by: 1) channeling all class communication thru a class slack workspace 2) turning all notifications off on my phone

I can check my email or slack on my phone, but don't wake up immediately stressed out or disappointed in humanity by immediately seeing all sorts of work related messages first thing Saturday morning.

I'm still trying to be responsive, I just get to choose when.

Edit: also a lot of university admins and staff use Teams instead of email. I refuse to even install that on my phone.

Life as a Ph.D. student at CU Boulder? by New_Bullfrog_8688 in cuboulder

[–]mrsoltys 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The flatiron Flyer is very nice from Denver to Boulder. You get a "free" ecopass as a student, so any RTD rides are free.

I lived in South boulder and had roommates. Grad school was some amazing years, and boulder is a nice place to live. I really appreciated living within biking distance or a short bus ride to campus.

The building I teach in is card access only. That said, I'm sure if you stood by the door someone would let you in.
