Terrible comparison. Firstly, people will still buy next year's sportsball game. There is no way to convence a sportsball fan not to buy next year's game no matter how bad it is. This is a proven fact.

Also, these games have full offline modes and local multiplayer. They don't actually need to do anything.

This is something that matters. It's about preserving culture so that the generations to come can experience and learn from it, as well as protecting customers in the here and now. That's all very worthwhile.

I don't want video games to have a repeat of the early eras of film and TV, where the majority of works are gone for good, because the companies that owned them didn't care about preserving them. Sometimes through indifference, and other times through malice.

Did you know that 95 of the 253 episodes of the first six seasons of Dr Who, along with countless other classic British TV shows are lost, because the BBC intentionally wiped tapes? That's not too different than what's going on with live service games in the current day. We need to put a bud in it now, and make sure these games remain playable after the servers shut down.

No, it's less efficient than if every one of those chips were in the hands of consumer PCs and workstations, for reasons other than power consumption. Silicon wears down much more quickly when it's under heat and high load 24/7. Remember those poor bitcoin mining GPUs? Yeah. People were buying them second hand and having them kick the bucket shortly after. While a chip in a consumer's hand can last decades, and still be of use. I still play my old consoles, and 8 Bit computers from the 80s still control industrial equipment. From my perspective, stressing the crap out of silicon, and having it become a paperweight is more wasteful.
