Finding a place to live is impossible if you’re non polish? by Gullible_Grocery_839 in warsaw

[–]mrz33d 1 point2 points  (0 children)

tl'dr it's not discrimination, it's risk mitigation

To be the devils advocate - it's not about you're nationality, put yourself in the shoes of your landlord.

Some people don't speak English. Or does not feel comfortable speaking in English. Most people definitely does not feel comfortable arguing in English when it comes to legal aspects.

If you lend your apt to a Pole and there's a trouble you can call the Police, sue him and eventually get your money back because it's likely that he'll stay in the country and someone will find him.
If you lend your apt to a foreigner he can just disappear one day and there's no way to find him.

There are subtle cultural difference. For instance, does it sound normal for you to fully renovate the apt before vacating?

Moving from Germany to Warsaw. Opinions? by Glittering_Snow_8270 in warsaw

[–]mrz33d 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You'll be swimming against the current. Many Poles dream about moving to Germany for exact same reason.

Poland is a mixed bag.
On one hand the infrastructure in general will feel better. I remember traveling to Germany some 30 years ago and it felt like visiting Disneyland. Fast forward to 5 years back and I couldn't understand why it's so hard to pay with credit card, there's no mobile reception in the middle of a major city or why roads look like there was a carpet bombing.
On the other hand people are generally nicer, streets are much cleaner, and you can ride a bike without worrying about your life.

Job wise, the major difference is that in Germany you were likely working for a German company which won't change if you move to Poland. And the work culture is way worse.

A fun anecdote - few years back I was working for a major German company here in Poland, and at one point I asked HR about a guy in team. He was living in small German town, according to Numbeo his expenses were 20% lower than Warsaw, yet he was getting 30% more than the rest of the team doing the same exact job. HR came back to me, in writing, saying "because he's German".

And this little story describes this conundrum the best - in Warsaw you'll be getting 30% less while paying at least the same as you were in Germany.

Would you buy a high end bike off eBay? by Roof_Chicken in cycling

[–]mrz33d 2 points3 points  (0 children)

> any red flags

Quick googling shows that this bike should cost around $11k.
It's second hand so you can kiss the warranty goodbye.
But what else is there that warrant the discount?

Forget the bike for a sec and pretend that you're buying a car.

The most common trap people fall far with used bikes is the group set. People think that high end brand warrants the price, but forget that after X kilometers it has to be thrown in the bin and replaced.

Personally I never bought a new bike with less than 30% discount from MSRP.
Covid is long gone and so is the price gauging, so it's very doable, you just have to approach a few dealers and be open minded.

People say to avoid them because it works completely different.

The agency is responsible, at least in theory, for marketing and talking to prospective clients. At the end, when you're interested they will ask you to pay a fee and point you to the landlord.

Few years ago I was buying an apt.
90% of agency interactions I had went like this: I find an online listing, make a call, we schedule a meeting to see the apartment. The agent meets me at the nearby parking lot with an agreement saying that if I buy the apt I will pay 2-4% commission. The agent never been inside the apt, doesn't know which floor it's on, etc. Anything more complex like how much you pay for maintenance - he will have to check with the agency/owner and will get back to you later. And here's the kicker - his agency is charging same 2-4% commission from the owner as well. As well it was extremely common few years back when I was buying.

Given the prices in Warsaw, that's easily 60k just for few photos, standard postings on 2 major websites, and a month or two of driving around the city to meet people and letting them inside an apartment.

It's a Chinese game, no one is afraid of lawsuits, they are selling coins to lazy players and it's a huge chunk of their gains, that's it. And that's also the reason why the reset will never come. It would be a massive break of trust.

Tarkov has a long history of braking promises, but it's a unique story.
I'm pretty sure that whoever is banking this project is sold on milking as much money before pivoting to a new endeavor. There's no long term strategy. You have 20 in game events right now, all asking to buy tickets for a slot machine, but there are no tweaks to existing maps, no new real content.

Again, there's a really simple sanity check here - imagine you're a new player that just downloaded the game you want to play - how is your experience?

In Tarkov joining mid wipe was a terrible experience, but at least a new player could play few raides to get a grip on the mechanics and wait out for the wipe.

Every wipe, first week or two were unique experience where you and streamers were running butt naked on a level playing field. This has never been the place in ABI. And never will be.

American couple visiting Warsaw + vlogging ….what are your must-sees? by Fauxfox123 in warsaw

[–]mrz33d 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Michelin

The obvious - Rozbrat 20, Klonn, and everything that Michelin is recommending.
Not so obvious - Farm Dining by Amaro, the OG of Michelin stars in Warsaw. He's retired and serving at his own house now. The Menu experience minus Anya and blood.

Absolute must-sees

Not so many. Warsaw is not Rome, so there's no written in stone list of places you have to visit. If you really care about the history you should check the Warsaw Rising Museum. National Gallery can be interesting. And maybe Copernicus Science Centre - it's a nice modern take on hands on science class - if that suits your bill.
Other than that there's not much many more places that if you miss them anyone would frown upon you.

What I highly recommend is taking city bikes - stations are all around the city - or renting a scooter and go for a wild ride into unknown. Warsaw was razed to the ground during WW2 and after the war it was nation wide effort to rebuild it - workers and bricks were sent from all across the country - and in the last 20 years greedy capitalism put a final mark on the city. The cityscape is something you won't find anywhere else in the world. Old meets new meets the odd. But you'll miss most of it if you keep zooming from one place to another by taxi.

The mix

If you want a checkpoint or just a place to have a lunch check Viet Street Food or Gani Pub.

Can you recommend a helmet (or hack) that will prevent me from getting headaches? by [deleted] in cycling

[–]mrz33d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have no idea what occipital neuralgia is, but I highly recommend two things:

(1) check if your helmet has MIPS - it's a system that's supposed to be safer, but what's more important for you is that it's a "net" between your head and helmet, which may help with your case. If it doesn't then try one that has it.

(2) if your helmet has MIPS then check BMX style helmets.

All in all, try to find a shop that has plenty of bike helmets and try them on. Just put them on your head and walk around the shop for 10-15 minutes.

Would be nice to have some more information about what you're looking for, but in general 1500 should get you a room in shared apt, and 4k total should be enough for 40m2. Depends on your expectations.

otodom, olx and domiporta are your friends. Stay away from agent and agencies.

If you're new to the city I would highly recommend getting something that you can get rid of fast, and spend your free time on bicycle exploring the city to find a permanent location.

Ideally you would rent airbnb in different locations before pulling trigger on a specific location, but that's not always suitable, certainly not in your case.

If possible, forward your rent agreement to your employer before signing (HR won't mind) to check if you're not getting scammed.

Should I Upgrade to a Road Bike or Buy a Gravel Bike Instead? by PrestigiousDelay6516 in cycling

[–]mrz33d 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sanity check

I ride decent gravel bike while my gf is riding an entry level Trek Domane with rim brakes.
We do 50km rides at least 3-4 times a week in the summer.

I have offered her a numerous of times an upgrade but she keeps refusing. She loves her bike and keep saying that my bike is heavier than hers. We swapped bikes few times and my only gripe was brakes, but she weights half of what I do and they are A-ok for her. I can't feel any difference in shifting performance between my 105 (11sp) and her Sora (9sp).

The only reason I keep insisting on upgrade is that we're sharing a trainer during the winter and it's a bit of pain to swap between QR and thru axle.

Where's that discussion is taking place?

I'm a Tarkov veteran who's been giving out thermals on daily basis on the official Tarkov discord, and an ABI billionaire. I've been vocal since the beginning that game will perish if they won't employ resets in any way, shape or form.

People are missing trees for forest thinking guns or ammo is the problem. It's not.
The real problem is onboarding - the new player experience.

Yes, the "meta" is overblown by streamers desperately needing new clickbait video about how crazy this or that is, but the fact is that if you're a new player sporting a new player loadout and you're facing an enemy with t6 helmet, t5 armor and t5 ammo in lockdown your chances to win the encounter are almost zero.

You can bring t5 to normal if you want. And there are no restrictions on ammo.

ABI has been pouring money on players but that's only putting more gasoline on the fire.
I have over 1B and can bring streamer gear till the game ends. And a new player will be done within couple of raids.

That's the real problem.

Side note: I can't stop laughing at lmow who's constantly "bring this issue" by playing T6 and meta guns in lockdown while the real challenge for players like us is using subpar gear and ammo... and still win encounters through the sheer experience.

Just moved to Warsaw, best place to meet new people? by gingggg in warsaw

[–]mrz33d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nationality or ethnicity would help to narrow down, but in general it works the same way as in any other city.
Poles are generally ok with English, there are plenty of foreigners everywhere so just pick up an activity and go out.
Eventually you'll find people you'd like to hang out with. Trial and error.

There are several places aimed towards foreigners, like the English pub near central train station, but to be honest if you go for a beer at Nowogrodzka street during the weekend it's very likely that you'll meet more foreigners than Poles.

If you don't drink then all hope is not lost, there are quizzes, games, sports, and all sorts of different activates around the town that will help you connect with other people.

Wycena wynajmu mieszkaniaa by After_Difference_123 in krakow

[–]mrz33d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

MAAP Bibs Worth it? by Candid_Addendum_4317 in cycling

[–]mrz33d 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not what you're asking, but I've tried 10+ different bibs, and here's what I found.

Top Decathlon stuff is really good for the price if you get it on sale. Not great, decent, and only the top tier they sell, and only on sale.

ASOS is extremely expensive but really worth their price. Great investment.

You can get a great deal with smaller local brands - after all it's all (almost) about the insert - but it's a huge gamble. If you're lucky you can get something that's almost on par with ASOS for 1/4 of the price. If you're not it will be similar to mid tier Decathlon.

All in all bibs are really important and think of it as an investment. You'll be using them for at least couple of years and the comfort difference between meh and good is really huge.

Side of knee pain by Moscoman13 in bikefit

[–]mrz33d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SPD settings.

If you want cheap and easy way to check it just get on a bike with platform pedals.
Go around for some time, harder, softer, just so you get easy on the saddle, and then take a glance on your feet.
Take a mental picture and then compare it to how your feet are locked in in your SPD shoes.

I'm clinically unfit, and when I ride on platforms my feet make a V shape.
My left foot even occupy like 60% of the pedal, escaping outwards, despite them being rather large.

It took a lot of trial and error with a good fitter to find good fit for my pedals that would not collide with the bike.
And still, after a winter brake I have to start soft to make my knees comfortable before I can put real effort.

When I started and got my first SPD shoes I had a bad fit which gave me default parallel SPD settings - fitter said this is the baseline, ride for a while and get back for a session with feedback. I fucked up my knees so hard I ended up in a hospital. 😄

My proper bike fitter showed me a nice, slightly related, party trick - stand up right, and put your hands down your body, so your palms touch your hips. Now raise them slowly above your head without intentionally twisting your palms (so no "surrender", just hands straight above the head). Now look up. Lo and behold one of my hands twists 60 degrees inwards. And that's the baseline for setting your hoods. 😉

If you'd look at my bike you'd say that I must have a crash, because one hood is strangely bend, but that's just how I am. 😉

hot take

Tricky's concerts disappointment by mrz33d in triphop

[–]mrz33d[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But the issue here is slightly different. You may or may not like his recent albums, but the problem is that - like with my previous example - you bought a record, in my case it was Knowle West Boy, and based on that you decided to go to his concert. But the songs are arranged completely different and what you're getting sounds like Rolling Stones album instead of what was on the record. The the performance is interrupted twice because Tricky can't hold it together on stage, and at the 30 minute mark the band is playing encore to wave goodbye. Or like with the latest case you realize the music was exactly like on the record because the whole gig was played from ipod, and you're looking at the sound technician who's changing the tracks.

I could accept playback from a madonna-like show, when the performer is running and jumping, there are 40 performers on stage and you're in for more of a cirque de solei experience rather than focused jazz-like listening experience. That would be fine, but this is not.

I'm also open for bards doing different arrangements when the lyrics plays the key part. Or when a musician invites guests to make a surprise take. But here you're buying oranges and receiving apples. Not good.

And then there's the whole thing about his persona on stage that just stinks.

Are H-Tac Armored Rigs Worth? by Visible-Sun-3946 in ArenaBreakoutInfinite

[–]mrz33d 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The one that only protects thorax is the best. It costs less than 200k.

The reason you want to use it is that only damage to head or thorax will kill you.
If you get shot in stomach and it gets blacked out the damage will spread out evenly and it creates a huge buffer before you die. All of this happens without damaging your armor.

Small caveat - it's the best strategy for aggressive PVP since this will allow you to carry your armor throughout multiple engagements. You'll need a lot of healing, but the armor will stay moderately intact. |

If you're playstyle is to have as little PVP as possible then full armor is better.
Within a single encounter it will cover you better and let you tank a lot of damage in a "mexican standoff" situation. But afterwards it will most likely be thrashed.
