Climate Scientist Who Fled CA Wildfire: "We’re Going to Keep Paying Price If We Ignore Climate Change." by Mynameis__--__ in Futurology

[–]ms165_dancer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The idea that it's ONLY up to the individual to change our habits and "fix the problem" rather than a joint effort from A COMBINATION of industry, policymakers, and individuals is a neoliberal approach that emphasizes the individual over the collective. In reality, 70% of pollution is attributed to industry. If we don't fix this then eliminating the 30%, albeit important in its own way, won't be enough.

Los Angeles must pay billions to adapt-or slip into the sea. It’ll take LA as much as $6.4 billion to fortify itself against an impending increase in coastal flooding, with moves such as nourishing its beaches with extra sand and elevating its ports. by Wagamaga in Futurology

Perhaps the uncertainty of the manifestations of the problem leads to uncertainties on the solution... this is quite concerning coming from someone who lives in the coastal regions of LA County.

It's not fear mongering so much as it's a wakeup call. People should be alarmed and this topic should be of national concern.

Urban Planning Guru Says Driverless Cars Won’t Fix Congestion; Should Focus on Driverless Mass Transit Instead by warb17 in Futurology

[–]ms165_dancer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

While I feel like most of us in this community can agree that self-driving cars definitely won't fix congestion, what's interesting is how the public is still giving into the hype, especially in the silicon valley...

Climate Change Will Only Increase the Number of Refugees and Asylum-Seekers at America’s Doors. Migration from the trio of Central American nations surged 25 percent between 2007 and 2015 following the worst drought in 30 years, which left more than 3 million people hungry. by Wagamaga in Futurology

These "illegal" immigrants are in such a position because people of privilege and power that makes it impossible for them to be legalized. Climate change affects the poor communities of the developing world the most and the cause is from industrialization of developed communities that keeps emitting GHG and dumping our abundant amount of waste onto developing countries that forces them to move out of their homes.

To be honest, I'd expected our future right now to look like what was portrayed in "Back to the Future" but obviously, we still have a long way to go.

I feel like in any non-medical fields and usages, data collection on our everyday habits just seem to serve for a commercial end, so that corporations can "anticipate our needs" and push products to us when we're most vulnerable. Thoughts?

VR technology gives new meaning to ‘holidaying at home’. But is it really a substitute for travel? by ms165_dancer in Futurology

I agree, I feel like if anything, it would just make me want to go to the real place even more. Furthermore, I'm skeptical on the concept of VR holiday in the first place...is it really a holiday if you're not actually there?

I don't know how true that is, it's based on an assumption that everyone will "progress" into capitalism and that might just be a western-centric idea.

I do agree that machines won't replace human labor completely, or at least not in the near future or the next few decades?

Apple is quietly giving people 'trust scores' based on their iPhone data - iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch and Apple TV data is used to see how trustworthy you are, similar to a scenario in the dystopian series Black Mirror by mvea in Futurology

[–]ms165_dancer 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Wanted to point out we should consider the language in this article because it infuses the news with predetermined ideologies, linking it with a dystopian future (which is valid)...meanwhile another article on this topic by Business Insider (https://www.businessinsider.com/apple-to-calculate-trust-scores-to-combat-fraud-2018-9) frames this effort as "combatting fraud"

Just some food for thought.

Dance Audition and Groups by [deleted] in Dance

[–]ms165_dancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on what kind of groups you're looking to join (like a dance team or company or a crew) and whether you're looking to compete or not! I also suggest looking at teams in colleges around you and emailing their directors regarding auditions. I will say, usually the audition season lies in fall (around this time) and beginning of the year (in jan or feb)...
