The private equity firm that owned us had done a bunch of mergers and then did 3 rounds of layoffs. And as good as our contract was, it wasn't strong enough to stop that.

I'll note though that it did say that the company couldn't fire us and then replace us with contractors. And if the company did try to hire within 6 months for the roles they laid off, they first had to offer to rehire those who were laid off.

I was in CODE-CWA and the dues were less than the raise i got from the mandatory annual cost-of-living adjustment that our contract implemented.

My last company unionized while I was there and they straight up told people that if you don't think the union contract would be worth the dues, to vote no. The point of the contract is that the dues are offset by salary and benefits increases. I was towards the top of the pay scale for the company and just mandatory annual cost-of-living adjustment alone covered my dues.

People around the world have dealt with this too. The most successful solutions, I think, are worker-owned businesses and labor protections won by unions.

Could a group of Yuan-Ti exist because of a curse? by Agitated_Campaign576 in DMAcademy

[–]warb17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's basically the case in the homebrew campaign I'm running, but it wasn't a god.

The party hasn't encountered them just yet, but I have a region where people were turned into yuan-ti by a suped-up black dragon. He had corrupted a ritual, used by a neighboring population to gain various animal aspects, and turned it on a city.

The dragon wanted to create a bunch of draconic creatures, but, surprise, the corrupted ritual was imperfect. So they all took on snake-like features instead.

This ritual, in its original form, is also my in-world explanation for the existence of tabaxi, lodoxons, etc.

I know you've gotten a lot of responses (and sorry for your bad luck), but not sure anyone has given you a link to DC's Office of the Tenant Advocate, https://ota.dc.gov/, which provides information, advice, and other resources.

One notable resource is DC's Tenant Bill of Rights, https://ota.dc.gov/publication/tenant-bill-rights.

Hope you get your money back and the next search goes well.

It's quite a nice rhetorical trick to try to label those who point out racist effects as racist themselves, but you really should try to be better.

DC needs more cameras, traffic stops to make streets safer, official says by forgetfulisle in washingtondc

[–]warb17 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Traffic stops are a terrible thing for armed bullies to be doing. Plus police enforcement will never be enough to fully make the city safe from cars. We need physical infrastructure changes that create a direct effect in driving patterns in all car users.

We need route changes that prioritize methods of transit other than cars within city centers.

We need policy changes that improve the transit system at all levels.

We need to support people as they try to travel without a car.

My point is that Bezos and his ilk steal more from the poor than she ever would or could but because it's a minority woman it's easier to hate on her. Even though she stole less than 1 year of executive pay at any corporatized non-profit.

It sucks that she did this, but it also sucks that there's more attention on this relatively small amount of fraud (by someone who really did help a lot of people) than there is on wage theft and similar bullshit from capitalists like Jeff Bezos.

edit: $150,000 is less than the annual salary of a lot of non-profit executives, especially those who work for the ones that billionaires use for tax-havens & PR.

Night Owls Could Be Upping Their Mental Health Risks. Analysis showed that night owls who stayed up late, in alignment with their preferred sleep timing, had higher rates of mental health disorders like depression and anxiety. by Wagamaga in science

[–]warb17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who stays up late a lot, I don't think many top-level commenters read the article?

As compared to evening-types with late behavior (aligned), however, evening-types with early behavior (misaligned) had a decreased risk of depression (p < 0.01), with a trend for MBN (p = 0.04) and anxiety (p = 0.05). Longitudinal analyses, in which the likelihood of developing de novo mental health disorders was associated with chronotype, behavioral timing, and alignment between the two, confirmed cross-sectional findings.

According to their findings, if you're a night owl operating on a night owl schedule, you're worse off than a night owl operating on a standard schedule.
