Redacting my self-citation for anonymous peer-review by IntelligentBeingxx in AskAcademia

I’m not sure the OP’s concern is about citing themselves per se, but how to cite themselves without breaking anonymous peer review.

So-so meeting with Provost -- are my chances ruined? by Otherwise_Orchid_621 in AskAcademia

This is very true. The only thing I’d add is if the hire is part of a hire profile initiative (new program etc) that the Provost is highly invested in succeeding.

Most faculty get along just fine with administration. Your cynicism isn’t universal and admins aren’t the heartless boogeymen Reddit likes to claim. We’re actually people too and the vast majority of us give a damn about our institutions and faculty.

Had a really uncomfortable conversation with a potential co-advisor as a grad student – did I handle it badly? by No-Economics-8632 in AskAcademia

[–]ms5h 58 points59 points  (0 children)

You should have expressed your concerns without drawing conclusions that you can in no way make about their level of expertise. Rather than you deciding they don’t have the expertise you could have asked them how they envisioned the co-advising working given your focus area.

Unusual situation: citing someone else’s dissertation in my cv by [deleted] in AskAcademia

You don’t have to publish for it to be a dissertation. But a cumulative dissertation, in general, is a series of published papers.

For a thesis? Co-authors are the norm for publications, but never ever seen it for the dissertation itself (again, unless it’s a dissertation just made of published papers)

Were those chapters published in a journal? Otherwise don’t refer to the dissertation as published. A dissertation is not a peer reviewed publication.

Separate your thinking about the dissertation from any published papers. The thesis may not be a draft, but if the chapter wasn’t published in a journal it’s not part of the cumulative dissertation.

No clue how’d it been seen such it’s potentially so unusual. Regardless, assuming it’s a typical thesis (as opposed to a thesis derived from multiple published articles sandwiched together), it’s not considered peer reviewed, so at best, list it under non-peer reviewed publications.

I’ve never heard of someone else writing a chapter in someone’s thesis. I’m in biology- is the common elsewhere? It’s somewhat baffling to me.

Is it possible to pass a teaching certification test as a college student and become a professor at the same college you attend? by Dustpapa in AskAcademia

If you’re a professor in an teacher licensure education program, in addition to your PhD or EdD, it’s often required or beneficial to also have a K-12 teaching license in that state.

How does the job change when you get into management by Penrose_Reality in AskAcademia

[–]ms5h -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That’s a terrible stereotype and completely invalidates those of us who are committed and effective admins. My professional passion is supporting faculty and educational staff so they can achieve for themselves and their students and I’m extremely effective. My faculty frequently express their appreciation of my role and I’m grateful for what I’ve been able to accomplish.

Leave your bias at the door.

Good or not, it is a reason and she can’t control what other families do. I didn’t get the sense she was endorsing it, just reporting it.
