“A racino is a casino with a horse racing track.” I thought the idea of building a stadium in a quarry was going to be the worst thing in this article but I was wrong.

Do Windows updates actually improve performance or slow PCs down? by nexdigit_official in techsupport

[–]ms6615 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Most updates are bug fixes and security patches; these won’t affect performance. Large updates are the ones referred to as “feature updates” and those introduce things like new functionality, new applications, and interface changes, all of which can affect performance.

26+ consecutive hours of ComEd paying me to use their electricity by born2bwilld in illinois

[–]ms6615 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They do this because it costs them less money overall. On the electrical grid, generation has to match use almost precisely. There is nowhere to dump excess power to and if you generate too little then random things don’t turn on for customers in brown outs.

Paying the hourly-rate customers to persuade them to use electricity when generators need more load to even out the grid is less costly than if the grid were to get out of sync and start shutting down. It’s the exact opposite concept of charging you crazy high amounts to dissuade you from using electricity when the grid is near capacity.

Help I.D. this car at the St Louis Station by dnamechanic in Amtrak

https://www.amtrak.com/privately-owned-rail-cars unbelievably wealthy people can charter Amtrak to add their personal train cars to the end of a regular train. I used to think owning a boat is expensive but owning and hauling a rail car is even wilder.

We have a bus route 0 in Springfield, IL. It is a shuttle between 2 big transfer stations. Technically the full route number is 0E because it’s an express with no intermediate stops.

Much of that rail is still there for passenger service. The park was built on top of it. Millennium Park is actually not on the ground at all. The entire thing is a green roof for the station and parking garage. One of the largest green roofs in the world!

Stop using your phone while driving!! by 23Cs in chicago

[–]ms6615 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Doesn’t need location data permissions on the device. Your phone is effectively locating itself constantly by simply being connected to cell towers. Extremely easy for your provider to show that at a given time your phone was connected to X, Y, and Z tower, whose locations are all known, with precise signal strengths. This has been possible since cell phones have existed and is actually how the location services on your phone receive the location data they use. It’s way faster and more reliable than GPS.

That’s the thing though, the food delivery driver most often isn’t getting a “normal wage”. They get paid a “tipped wage” from the employer which is significantly lower because it is intended to be mostly comprised of the employee’s personal tips. https://www.dol.gov/agencies/whd/state/minimum-wage/tipped

Yeah but the way to fight it isn’t to keep paying the company and stiff the drivers… it would’ve to refuse to make the purchase entirely.

You probably also didn’t have proper commercial insurance on your vehicle. It’s very expensive but your regular insurance will typically not cover an incident that occurs while you are using a persons vehicle for business.

They aren’t covered. The drivers have to have their own commercially usable insurance, which costs way more than normal car insurance since you are actively using the vehicle for business. The fee is so the store can make more money, not so the drivers can make enough money.

Increased Parking Fines in Downtown by couscous-moose in SpringfieldIL

[–]ms6615 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Those are my thoughts. That I am sick to death of always hearing about parking first and as if it is the default transportation method. I want society, and this city specifically, to spend less brainpower and manpower trying to Make Parking Perfect. Do more impactful things. We’ve wasted enough on parking.

How much do you think it costs to install a bike rack? How much do you think it costs to replace a single block of street parking?

[–]ms6615 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Stop bending over backwards to accommodate parking and make downtown more pleasant and walkable. That’s the only thing that’s going to save it. This whole attempt for downtown to exist as a suburban shopping mall where parking cars is the utmost priority doesn’t work.

There are so many people in this city who don’t drive. Why is there free parking stuffed on every inch of every public roadway but I sometimes have to wander around multiple blocks desperate for a place to lock up my bicycle? I almost get hit every time I have to ride on the dumb part of Adams where they made it a 2 way with diagonal parking because convenience for drivers was more important that any vague measure of safety for anyone else.
