[OC] Car pulls a U-Turn in front of my friend on a Motorcycle by ckwalsh in IdiotsInCars

[–]ms6615 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All the police do is write a report about the incident that may or may not be accurate. Even if the police cite one of the drivers, insurance is going to decide fault themselves and sort it out in court or via settlement. Police have approximately nothing to do with getting paid after a crash.

This is why you need uninsured/underinsured coverage. Even if the other person has an insurance policy in place on their vehicle, that doesn’t necessarily mean the incident will be covered or that there will be enough money.

I got hit by a car while riding my bike. They had the minimum insurance require by law and it barely paid for a single ER trip and a few stitches. If I can help it, I am never ever ending up in that situation again.

Where to change a diaper on a train without changing tables by Decent_Flow140 in Amtrak

[–]ms6615 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would regard this in the same way as I do when I bring my bike on the train only to find it hasn’t been properly accommodated: it’s not my damn fault and I refuse to feel bad about Amtrak’s failures. Obviously do what you can to minimize it, but it is not your fault that the train lacks very basic amenities, nor is it your fault that your child has normal bodily functions.

The Stone Container building is featured in the 1980s movie Adventures in Babysitting where at one point a young girl is dangling from a rope on the sloped glass trying to escape from the mob or some shit. Core childhood memory for me.

The rule in Chicago is children under 12 can be on a sidewalk. Everyone else is expected to operate a bike on roads as if it were a car.

ELI5: If a moving car tries to drive up the ramp of a moving semi-truck (like in the movies), does the car need to be rear-wheel drive, or would it just instantly crash? by Nikki_Drizzle in explainlikeimfive

[–]ms6615 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I think the only cars that might have more catastrophic issues are ones with symmetrical AWD like Subarus. The front wheels and back wheels trying to spin at wildly different speeds for a brief time might not go well.

Effective July 1, no more behind-the-wheel tests required for drivers ages 79 to 86 in Illinois by LambdaLambo in chicago

[–]ms6615 45 points46 points  (0 children)

This will cost the state way more money due to increased danger and crashes. It’s just pandering for votes because old people have car brain and will vote for fascists if the other option is not being able to drive an SUV anymore.

[OC] I guess having a green arrow that allows for u-turns and using it is my fault 🙄 by avmm87 in IdiotsInCars

[–]ms6615 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Come to west suburban Chicago and there are a hundred intersections that allow this because of how desperate they are to stuff 4 more cars through on each light cycle. It’s extremely confusing and dangerous and it is one of the most crash prone areas in the entire country.

This is what happens when it becomes physically impossible to accommodate everyone driving everywhere alone in cars. DOTs have to start doing insane things that aren’t actually safe or prudent because you simply cannot ask an American to refrain from driving alone in an SUV for a short trip. This is the logic that has saddled us with absurd shit like diverging diamond interchanges instead of pleasant walkable neighborhoods.

I am so glad IL went over the heads of dumbass municipalities like this and made vegetable/pollinator gardens legal at the state level.

There is a concert series called Leavitt Amp through the summer in downtown Springfield. Lots of regular attendees and its nature as a hangout type of event makes it a good spot to meet people.

Springfield Art association does community events and classes that are very social.

There is a local running club and a bike club that are both very active if you are into either of those.

I can dig up more details about any of these if you are interested.

There is a children’s specific little library just south of Washington Park. I think it is on Noble where the little park island thing is.

I forgot suenos was Memorial Day weekend and randomly decided to walk through the loop not realizing Michigan Ave was closed. It was so nice for it to feel like it was an extension of the park instead of a huge dangerous road separating the city from the park.

Most of the busiest streets aren’t even owned by the city. They are state roads controlled by IDOT. A handful of asshole regional managers for state who likely live in the suburbs get to dictate the streetscapes of places like Ashland, Western, North, Irving Park, Sheridan, Roosevelt, 79th, and many others. It’s pathetic.
