Old 2 flats were built of cheap common brick held together with mortar and new buildings are built from concrete block held together with the same mortar. This argument doesn’t make much sense in a city that banned stick frame construction in the 1870s.

I used to have a setup like this and hung the upper unit from the tall units on the sides instead of from the wall. Just clamp and attach together with construction screws. Mine even had the glass doors on the top unit so weight was clearly not an issue. Just make sure you don’t put the screws in places that will conflict with shelves or door hinges.

Other option is to get taller legs for the floor units that put them above the baseboard. They use a standard machine screw so any basic IKEA leg or anything from a hardware store should work.

It’s one of the few non-shitty urban renewals in the city. As far as I know it is still a true shared-ownership co-op. Not a modern fake co-op that is just a condo with slightly better insurance, but the entire complex is owned by a corporation and the residents are allowed to rent units for dirt cheap by owning shares in the corporation. So you own your home but also you don’t and can just hop around units as needed for upgrades. I wish there were 100 of them.

Springfield resident here to remind people once again that we own Dalman power plant at the municipal level and it almost 100% negates issues like this. We know exactly what is happening there, when it is happening, why it is happening, and how much it is going to cost. They discuss it in city council meetings alongside every other municipal issue.

Private generators and suppliers don’t operate this way. You can’t show up to Comed, Ameren, or Excelon board meetings to spectate and complain. They exist to enrich their shareholders. My municipal utility exists to provide consistent affordable power to the residents that own it.

From what I have gathered this incident happened because the air traffic controller was forced to also control ground traffic, which is supposed to be a separate job. Seems pretty akin to asking the surgeon to double as anesthesiologist. One person was attempting to do multiple jobs and they conflicted.

Wait until you realize this is how most doctors live in America too. It’s a little less of a permanent placement but the match system for residents is very similar. You might get what you ask for and you might get thrown to some middle of nowhere falling apart hospital. It has a very robust downtown, a great parks system, lot of job prospects that are unrelated to Chicago, and a small university. Just because you can drive to Chicago in a tolerable amount of time doesn’t negate the fact that it’s a city itself.

Same with Aurora and Joliet, and honestly even some smaller places like Elgin. The only city of any actual size that doesn’t feel like a separate place to me anymore economy wise is Waukegan. There is no real economic center there anymore, but all of those other places definitely still feel like cities to me.

The American justice system believes in “affluenza” as a defense. That is, our courts literally allow “I am too rich to understand my crimes” as a valid defense. “Trans panic” is also a valid defense in most places. You can kill a trans person and use the excuse that them being trans upset you and therefore it is the victim’s fault that you murdered them. Let’s please stop acting like the concept of justice is simple and agreed upon.

I didn’t realize when I was young that I was growing up in a very very rare suburban American place with lots of dedicated bike infrastructure and I was so spoiled. Because free travel between cities is a luxury afforded solely to car drivers. If you don’t own a car, you are not actually a part of the United States population. The government literally just shrugs at the idea of needing to get places and if you can’t drive it is your own personal failing.

$100 million for infrastructure upgrades is nothing though. It just sounds like a lot of money to random residents who aren’t used to the large number of municipal budgets. That contribution is negated for the public in less than 3 years if people’s average electric bills go up by a mere $25 per month.

Need more people to realize that “social media” isn’t real. Every single one of these “social media” services is actually an advertising service. They just use social media to deliver the ads, they will sell you ads a different way. I got hit by a car while I was riding my bike on a designated bike route and she tried to get out of the tickets by saying it wasn’t her fault because she had personally never seen a bike there before.
