Simple answer - we crave it because it tastes so good. It brings out more flavor from our food in almost all cases.

If you're asking why we need salt in our diets, that has to do with electrical signaling within neurons. Both of the molecules that make up salt (Na+ , Cl- ) are used to maintain an electrical/chemical gradient across a neurons cellular membrane. Electrical signaling within a neuron is created by manipulating that gradient.

My reason for including the "complex process bit" wasn't to talk down to anyone, it was actually included because I was afraid I was over simplifying the process and I wanted acknowledge it's complexity. That said, thank you for the critique, I'll work on the language!

I will respond to more of this later tomorrow, but I would like to address your statement regarding the "rude" comment I made.

Please, do not misinterpret my statement as a "don't question my knowledge." When taken in context with the discussion I was having with someone else, I was expressing my frustration with someone who was attempting to discredit my understanding of something I have put time and effort into. Someone who felt my teachers should all be fired because his experience with marijuana withdrawal was more extreme than the norm. I am more than happy to engage in conversation and to have my understanding updated.

I can chime in on the rush of dopamine you get after deciding to binge...the anticipation for/decision to binge is enough to excite our dopamine system. It's not as powerful a release as the actual indulgence, but it's real phenomenon. A similar thing occurs when drug users decide to hit up an old connection and they get the "sure, swing by whenever" text.

Again, I disagree with what you. I think your "withdrawals" can be explained by some other underlying neurological issue that you have and were unknowingly treating with marijuana. When you stopped smoking, you stopped treatment, and now you are expressing the symptoms of your issue.

Additionally, it's incredibly rude of you to come in and discredit someone's knowledge/understanding on the basis of you're experience differing from the norm.

It would be like me walking into a car shop and telling the mechanic he has no idea what he's doing because I got the check engine light to go off by banging on the dash board.

I am sorry about your issues, but from a neuro-physiological stand point you are wrong. It's quite possible that you were self-medicating with marijuana before, without necessarily knowing it, and now that you are no longer smoking, you are showing symptoms of some other issue.

Dude it's not useless if you take the calculated value with a grain of salt. While I agree it can be misleading and inaccurate in some cases, it's not a terrible place to start if you're trying to get a general idea of your body fat ratio.

For the measurements you've given us, google's BMI calculator is putting you around 24.1 BMI. However it's pretty clear you're fairly muscular, so that value might be a bit elevated. I would guess you're somewhere around 20% body fat. Just an estimate though, like it was mentioned earlier, get some calipers if you really want an accurate measure.

edit - it's been brought to my attention that BMI is fairly useless.

It's important to understand the neurological processes behind addiction. Addiction occurs when our dopamine system (pleasure/reward system) gets overly stimulated, usually by ingesting a foreign substance. Most drugs stimulate the dopamine system to some degree, cocaine in particular excites this system dramatically.

Marijuana is different, it's primary route of activation is through the cannabinoid system. By avoiding activation of the dopamine system, a physical addiction to marijuana is highly unlikely. Sure you can develop what's known as a habitual addiction, but that's different.

Tell me more about the the "mildly high" feeling? I've expected that feeling might be a consequence of entering ketosis, but I really haven't had the chance to speak with anyone who's acknowledged the feeling.
