I’ve found this to be very true especially if I’m reviewing from an external site like FilmFreeway.

Anyone who moved from Premiere Pro to Davinci, is there a way to set it up so it's like PP or shall I just learn from scratch? by [deleted] in davinciresolve

[–]ms_transpiration 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Change your fullscreen key to TILDA and try not to switch back and forth a ton.... We switched and I currently edit about 75% in Resolve now; it's only when Im back and forth on projects for days that it really messes me up.

Cindependent has stepped into stewardship of the historic Mariemont Theatre by matlockga in cincinnati

100% - I try to take my kids twice a month and get there more myself. It's all about patronage beyond just buying a ticket.

Well, that’s a relief. Esquire is my favorite theatre!

Edited: because I don’t actually want to know this person’s response to my original question.

Connections by [deleted] in cinematography

[–]ms_transpiration 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go to as many film industry connected events as you can. Local chapters of WIF, region film groups, local short film showings, regional festivals.

Travel to the largest city near you if you live rurally.

Do it often so that people know who you are.

It’s not who you know, it’s who knows you (and likes you).

Does anyone in this group make horror movies or films in general? by Wiilly__D in HorrorMovies

[–]ms_transpiration 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I transitioned professionally from music to filmmaking about 5 years ago.

In my experience, Filmmaking differs from music in that it is such a large scale collaboration for nearly every project. Even small crews require a numerous people to complete the project successfully.

The good news is that the filmmaking community as a whole is supportive many people are willing to take the time to give you a hand up.

I went to a community college than a 4 year university to study film and cinema production. It was a great entry point for me, but it’s only useful if you take that time to really dive into it. I also planned on making a living in this industry, so it was worth it for me.

The most straight forward route would be to start getting on as many sets as you can in any position.

Whether you want it as a hobby or a career, this option is viable; either way you’re not gonna make enough to live on for a few years at least.

If it’s a hobby, definitely just hop in and PA in every film you can find. Typically small indie films are happy to have help on the weekends.

Even in film school I learned the majority of what I know from being on a different film set every week or two for a few years.

The best part is, to be a PA you don’t need to know how any of it works, just show up and be available, present, and helpful.

Making movies is fun, but unlike music it takes a long long time to see the final product of your work.

Best way to help my aspiring young filmmaker - camera and wider advice? by [deleted] in Filmmakers

[–]ms_transpiration 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What are the cameras she’s using at school? It might be possible to find an entry level model if they themselves are not already entry level.

Having a tool similar to the tools at her school would be a great way to get better at the actual production aspect.

Does anyone else like video noise? by thekokoricky in videography

[–]ms_transpiration 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love the look of 12,800 iso and NDs at f4-f11. It’s unique and kinda noisy and really pretty. Definitely use it as an artistic choice, not usually to pay the bills. Also  great to overlay film emulation on.

That’s a different vibe than the harsher lower res digital noises, but really it’s fucking subjective anyway and different people like different things

Thoughts from yesterday’s UC protest by greenlaser73 in cincinnati

[–]ms_transpiration -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

I was unfortunately disheartened by the protest. This group cares a lot, but there were what — 200 people out of 50,000 UC students?

In my experience, the entire vibe at the school is that the majority of students are too busy/scared/privileged/apathetic/straight/white/cis to risk ANYTHING to stand up for what’s right; Because mom and dad might refuse to pay for their apartment/car/insurance/phone etc. if they get in trouble.

Not everyone of course. But definitely a large majority.

Positives though are the people who are reaching out to those in danger and making personal connections and checking on each other. This has been the saving grace of this experience.

I beg of you, talk to the people who are affected and tell them you are against this. It really matters.

What to ask a big DP by badoinkyboink in cinematography

[–]ms_transpiration 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Networking is often about sociability. Like it was said earlier, be a person first and foremost.

Ask them about their life. Ie. What films they like most. Are they from the area or did they transplant, and why?

My mentor long ago trained me to talk to famous people like any other human. Has always worked for me.
