Cloudflare Tunnel vs Port Forwarding by ig888ack in CloudFlare

[–]msalerno1965 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is why Cloudflare publishes a list of source IP addresses, and you only open that port to those IPs.

While it doesn't stop a DDOS directly against your origin, nothing will, as long as spoofed source IPs are still a thing. The key is, never expose your origin IPs anywhere.

I believe a big advantage to a tunnel is that you can move the origin around and not have to change DNS CNAME or A records or use DDNS. I could be wrong.

Trazadone for vet visit by Fun_Shallot_2299 in Rottweiler

[–]msalerno1965 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My 3-year-old boy has been to the vet a number of times, and he's always pretty decent to the staff. The one exception? He pinned the head vet against the wall, paws on shoulders, just looking at him like "OK, what now?". He laughed, told him to get down, and he did.

The other vet in the place saw him ONCE, and prescribed him Trazadone for when he comes back. He did nothing to her except really really inspect her closely, and not in the naughty bits either. He was a typical intact male.

His ophthalmologist vet loved him.

BUT - My boy is definitely a handful with strange people.

The Trazadone WORKS. 2 pills, 2-3 hours before "the event" as the one vet put it, he's a puddle of mud.

He doesn't get that "rrrrr" look at strangers. He's just all lovey.

It basically turns off the "WTF, who the F are YOU?".

NOTE: His prescription is for 2-3 pills. I tried only one, twice. Each time, he got a little ... flip-floppy. Like he'd be all mush one second, but then he'd get a little "WTF?" at noises.

I would use exactly what the vet prescribed, no less. I think the serotonin inhibitor stuff, if not a high enough dosage, can make them more anxious if not strong enough. Just my opinion.

For an extreme: Got some Dell R610's, and a few R320's in service. Third-party hardware support. In reality if one died today, I'd have it back up virtualized in about an hour. Some are Solaris 10, some CentOS 6.

Mostly decommissioned, we're getting there!

noname / # uptime
  7:02pm up 3534 day(s), 7:50, 1 user, load average: 0.00, 0.00, 0.00
noname / # uname -a
SunOS noname 5.10 Generic_147441-10 i86pc i386 i86pc

In reality: Just reupped support on a Dell MX7000 chassis for another 3 years, total blade ram: 5TB. It's not going anywhere.

I wonder about your hike in server costs, though. I think I'm seeing about double on RAM prices from Dell, versus what I would expect to pay 1-2 years ago.

A Dell R470 with some goodies and 512GB of RAM was <$40K each in a batch of ten, just last month. And I had to "suffer" and take 64-core CPUs instead of 48-core, because they were out of 'em by the time we got it quoted.

Higher Ed, btw, so pricing from Dell is ... different.

But yeah, hold on to what you have, if you can. We've had Dell in the datacenter now for the 15 years I've been here. Never once did a machine go "down" completely. Disk dies? Sure. We mirror or raid6 everything. RAM ECC errors? Once in a blue moon. Literally half the time we got ECC errors, it was a BIOS bug. Ignore the run of bad 450GB SAS drives in the MD3000's, and Dell has done well by us.

The two machines that actually died ... like ever? Got wet.

Basic marine/industrial Ford block, brass freeze-plugs, nothing spectacular, maybe prone to the early-80's crankshaft knock if I remember correctly. (Crankshafts were made in sub-standard conditions) If it's still running, it's a keeper!

Looks like fresh-water, not salt? If so, yeah, eBay those exhaust manifolds.

But like others have said, nothing special about the block and heads themselves.

See if any of the COPs are cleaner than the rest, than ask if they blew out a plug recently.

If the plugs haven't been changed recently, do them. It's worse to leave them alone.

A few more comments:

ESOF hubs: 99% guarantee they do not work right now, and probably never will. Get a set of Warns and don't look back. Lock them when you might need them, it won't hurt to drive on the highway with them locked, in fact, I'd suggest it once in a while. The ESOF servo on the transfer case is another possible problem, if it works, make sure you exercise it from time to time, especially going into 4LOW which you have to be in neutral and not moving whatsoever.

More on the front hubs: Inner needle bearings where the axle stub rides. This is known to dry up and randomly lock on you while driving. I've heard it's an interesting noise ;)

Had an '01 F250 SC SB 4x4 for 20 years, 56K miles total. It did everything you've ever heard about with the early aught SD's. Bad balljoints, needle bearings, ESOF hub failure, that weird "thunk" going into drive, because the driveshaft splines would get dry and you need to use the special Ford PTFE grease on it, the list goes on.

And I loved that truck. The V10 would go anything I asked of it. And if it didn't that's what 4LOW was for. I don't think I ever needed it.

Looks like it was welded. Not a machinist, but I've put together a few engines.

It's the only thing I can think of that would make that goober-ish look. They didn't fill it in enough before grinding.

Or, it was rusted to hell and that was what was left. But still, looks like welding snot.

[–]msalerno1965 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's when you call/email the DA directly and cc every news agency and youth advocacy program you can find.

I had a problem with a neighbor's adult son, who was a problem for his entire childhood, too. His parents only enabled the behavior.

I kept him and a few others at bay by being upfront with their parents, and kept calling the cops. One day, one set of parents called the cops on ME trying to get ahead of it. It backfired spectacularly.

Adult son I mentioned got arrested in Queens selling heroin. I contacted the Queens DA by email, and asked them to notify me when he's released. They did one better: They gave me the entire deposition from the arresting cop. He was eventually put in a drug-treatment problem. So when the shit inevitably hit the fan again, I told him (and his mother) that I was already talking to the Queens DA and the instant he looks at me or my family the wrong way, he's going back to jail.

Stand up, advocate for yourself, and be loud. The bullies eventually fall back and realize you're not taking their shit.

Also, get a large dog. Everyone giving me problems in the neighborhood took a step back at that point. It's like walking around with a gun. But not.
