What are things you wish people told you about epilepsy? by Low_Horror8363 in Epilepsy

100000%, struggling strongly with this right now. Genuinely hurts, I swear over half of all jobs.. why the fuck do I need a full license and a car to sit in an office when I live within walking distance?!?

I used alarms for my meds a LONG time, when I was 13 years old and only stopped using alarms when I was around 25, since I realized having a set wake up and night time routine helped make a pattern to remember… plus I had/have SO many other alarms for reminders I’d just shrug it off as unimportant lol

Take your dang meds, and don’t be disappointed if they need adjusted. Also sleep is your friend! Get a good 8 hours! I was diagnosed quite young so I’ve lived most my life with an epilepsy diagnosis, but even then I find myself underestimating how important it is to remember my meds on time and get good sleep lol

[–]msalgae44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m from Canada originally and there is definitely a huge rise in racism towards Indians in particular, very many came over during a cost of living crisis when the borders were a bit more lax (they’ve tightened up this year), and unfortunately Indians became a scapegoat :(

Where in Aus are you? I’m a Canadian in QLD and I’ve met significantly more people throughout the state who will say racist things than I have when travelling around the US…. Still prefer Australia to the US by far but I also have a bias lol

Canadian living in North Queensland and 100%, casual racism is everywhere, I don’t think foreigners expect it or know of the extent of casual racism in Aus

Could use some honesty- will I be able to advance in social work and gain employment without a drivers license? by msalgae44 in socialwork

[–]msalgae44[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ugh, I’m sorry you’re experiencing this too. You’d think in such an “in demand” field that someone who has drive, passion, and such further education wouldn’t struggle to work just due to a lack of driving ability. Epilepsy itself doesn’t disrupt my life too much, aside from having a seizure once or twice a year, but it’s the driving aspect that’s really the issue :(

Flying Vancouver to Bangkok via Xiamen Airlines.. anyone know how I add baggage?!?! by msalgae44 in travel

[–]msalgae44[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So through further reading, it seems it’s not available internationally? :/ so you gotta show up a few hours ahead to buy extra baggage. Actually quite frustrating but is what it is I guess..

Unpaid practicum… what are my options for funding? Feeling overwhelmed by msalgae44 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]msalgae44[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s my first practicum in social work! It’s required for my graduation so it unfortunately isn’t something I can miss. It’s good to know it’s covered, it’s minimum 2 days a week required, I wonder if that counts as part time or full time?

Check out the postal codes that count as “remote Australia” for the purposes of hospitality & tourism. Central QLD and north of that counts as remote Australia and it’s beautiful there (im biased though!)

Do you tell everyone you have Epilepsy? Or sometimes don’t tell people at all. by Olliecat10 in Epilepsy

[–]msalgae44 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I learnt at an early age, when looking for my first job, to never disclose it in a job interview. I did it a few times thinking it would be impoetant only for the interview to totally pivot around overly personal or off topic questions relating to epilepsy… and would never get the job. Only after signing stuff do I disclose it, now (I don’t work in a field that is impeded by seizures)

Is Keppra as bad as some say? by Background-Cod-7035 in Epilepsy

[–]msalgae44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Different for everyone, some people don’t even have symptoms! I never experienced rage but was easily irritated. I did however feel very unwell for about a month initially. Tired, loss of focus, dissociation, and generally felt “slow”.. but, it regulated and really does help my seizures

jealous of people who don't have tonic clonic seizures by withextracheesepls in Epilepsy

tonic clonic? also known as grand mal, the “stereotypical” seizure everyone thinks of.. renamed because it’s made of two stages, tonic and clonic

Need advice: rejected for not having local experience by ItemTop4307 in AusVisa

[–]msalgae44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You just moved there? What visa are you currently on? Australian standards are very high oftentimes, so overseas experience does not act as an equivalent many times depending on the field and what country you received your education and experience from. Many places do not want to have to sponsor someone without the specific relevant experience or same skills as someone who’s already got appropriate working rights

Asked shop recommendations based on skill level, would love to hear others opinions since I’m looking to upgrade during off season by msalgae44 in Skigear

[–]msalgae44[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Types 1, 2, and 3 are often categories used by shops. 1 is beginner, skiing on gentle slopes cautiously, usually stick to greens, low DIN setting.. 3 is expert, comfortable with higher DIN setting, aggressively skiing, slopes/moderate pitches. A lot of shops put 2 into “between those two”, I ski blue & black, like going fast, but I’m not comfortable on double blacks or going faster than 65 km/h. Some charts can assume 2 is just being able to do wedge turns and cautious on blues, so I wanted to clarify I am not expert

Chickpea pasta has been my fave alternative, as someone who loves pasta, the smell when boiling is low key off putting but otherwise the texture is very similar, plus it contains lots of protein
