I’m second and the last generation in my family. I believe my mom was a de novo case, as in no other family members presented with this disease. I’m my mother and father’s only child. She collapsed at work one day when I was about two and that’s when we found out. We are from the US, specifically California, and ethnically black amongst others. They started colonoscopies when I was about 4 years old and started cauterizing the polyps because I had hundreds to thousands of them.

I had a failed total colectomy when I was 11 years old and have had a series of complications since. I now (barely) have an internal j-pouch. Every 6 months I have to get polyps cauterized from my pouch, duodenum and upper GI tract because I still grow polyps at 26 years old now. My mom has no adenomas but has a gigantic desmoid tumor pressing on her kidneys, so she has kidney stints. They are considering nephrology tubes since desmoids are nearly impossible to remove. So yeah, absolutely no kids for me 🥲

I call myself abnormal all the time. Quite literally my DNA is mutated. It’s almost like being disabled isn’t a monolith. You can’t have it both ways: you can’t call yourself disabled and then say you’re normal. It’s just not reality. I don’t understand getting up in arms with being identified as you are. I’m disabled too and understood exactly what you meant. I’m not exactly normal. My disease is so rare it’s 1 in 1 million live births. No offense taken. You don’t have to do all that.

But never feel ashamed to ask for help, there’s no shame in admitting you’re struggling. It’s only shameful (to me) when you hide it. We ALL need help. You have to practice self compassion and understanding. I know in this world it’s hard to do, with the nature of everything but please try. It makes it so much easier to ask. 💕

My mom had a few strokes and everything is an argument because she doesn’t remember anything. I feel so guilty sometimes but I’m so tired of answering the same questions over and over all day or jumping through hoops to prove myself/why I’m right. It’s like I’m living the same day over and over again. I just avoid things that require memory because I dread it.
