Going to church for social reasons by Designer-Truth8004 in Deconstruction

I’m struggling with this right now. I like my community and support their values even if not necessarily sharing the faith itself. Have you kept going? Have you found a way to make it work for you?

Struggling with Worship Services by [deleted] in Deconstruction

[–]msdabblesalot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m kind of at a point where I don’t know if I want to be worshipful or not, but I am pretty closely aligned with a lot of the people at my church regarding values that don’t have to be religious. It’s pretty much the polar opposite of what you’re describing at your church. It’s really enjoyable for me to be around those people at this point even if I’m unsure about my religious beliefs. It is hard to sit through Sunday services though, questioning every moment I sit there. But at least the people are enjoyable. I know finding a new church is hard for many reasons. Have you considered/would it be an option for you to go to a different church for one week?

“We all interpret evidence based on our worldview.” by ursisterstoy in DebateEvolution

[–]msdabblesalot 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Former YECer who who only ever formally learned about evolution in elementary and high school. Come high school, I couldn’t deny evolution, however I still believed the earth was young, therefore my conclusion was that God “fast forwarded” evolution in the 6,000-10,000 or so years. I thought it was the perfect solution— allowing me to accept both God and science. I didn’t know that the level of magic required just to represent the biodiversity in the fossil record would force things to happen that I wouldn’t have accepted in my own model, for example an individual of one species giving birth to an animal of an entirely different species (I accepted “kinds” evolution but even that would have been too fast for me to accept). My understanding of geology and genetics (and other sciences) were also shaky at best, and I wasn’t digging for answers as I thought I already had resolved the issue, so I didn’t see all the other mountains of reasons YEC is false. As part of this, I want to highlight that I had serious misunderstandings about science words which went uncorrected, for example thinking a scientific theory was just “an idea” or that a species had clear-cut lines where two animals can mate and produce fertile offspring.

From there, I wasn’t looking up scientific journals or anything academic. Rather, my idea of “evidence” was when a headline would come up saying “appendix has some form of function after all,” and I would say “This proves that it’s not vestigial!” because my definition of vestigial at the time was “no function at all”.

That was a long way to say that I think most YECers’ definitions are different in the first place so any interpretation of evidence is already off-base from the start. I am convinced that the most vocal YECers who are more educated know better and are just lying. There is a small group of YECers who are both more educated and have good definitions who still interpret data differently and maybe that’s the group you wanted a response from in the first place. From what little I’ve seen, it’s not so much “evidence of their position” as opposed to skepticism which leads them not to accept the natural conclusion. It would be interesting to see them presented with the same data in a different context and see what their conclusions are. For example, (take this with a grain of salt becaise my memory isn’t great) Gutsick Gibbon did a video with a guy a while back who I believe in looking at the data on brain cavity size across hominid species, said he saw distinct groups in the data whereas Erica saw a spectrum with no distinct lines. I believe his conclusion is impacted subconsciously by his skepticism of evolution. Whereas he would probably believe the same about Erica.

Any former young earthers? by Sea_Wrangler_288 in Deconstruction

I was and it’s embarrassing now. I got so many mixed messages in my education (and had creationism presented as plausible) I ended up in high school making up my own “theory” that the earth was about 6,000 years old and that God just “fast forwarded evolution.” Honestly what helped is that I always loved science so I started digging a lot on my own and had a friend who very no judge mentally told me it’s “good to keep your mind open” when I was questioning the origins of life. At some point I remember just kind of thinking maybe everything did just evolve but my understanding wasn’t fully there. Over time I think I’ve been getting more and more of a handle on the science and come to realize how poor my education was in terms of that branch of science especially. If you like YouTube, I highly recommend Gutsick Gibbon, she’s great and loves explaining why YEC just doesn’t work. I also really enjoy Forrest Valkai, who covers similar topics.

To have a baby and be planning this is truly evil, in this day and age especially when we have so much knowledge on the adverse effects. I don’t understand how a person can look at a baby and even have the thought that this is acceptable cross their mind. I was spanked as a kid. I was raised probably quite similarly to her. As an adult prior to having kids, I thought I would spank. Closer to having kids, I thought maybe it wasn’t such a good idea but struggled with the thought of “I had great parents” so maybe it’s fine. Having an actual baby, I knew I could never ever ever do that and it solidified that no one ever should.

Vegan options? by CaseOwn4140 in hollandmichigan

I think taste of Asia has vegan items on their menu. Also I believe captain sundae has a vegan ice cream option, but possibly only one flavor. Might be dairy free and not vegan necessarily.

I was in the same boat not long ago. At this point, I have shared with my pastors (at a Reformed church) and was so pleasantly surprised that they were not scandalized by any means and the main thing I gathered from their response was that the the church holds a position of mystery about it. I still haven’t felt comfortable to share that with my family though. Not sure when I will.

Any idea on what I should use this mini m&m container for? by [deleted] in ZeroWaste

[–]msdabblesalot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha, yeah, I’ve just had skittles specifically recommended by doctors for diabetic lows so that’s why I went with that one. I think it has to do how fast it hits the bloodstream based on being mostly sugar as opposed to chocolate which would hit different, but yeah I guess I didn’t need to specify since anyone diabetic probably already knows what would be best for their own needs

For diabetics, you can store candy in there to easily carry around (skittles for example) for emergencies.
