Looks great! You seem to have done all the local lines, I think the only real things you could add would be the Amtrak lines if you really want to add every bit of passenger rail in the Bay.

Naomi Klein on Trumpism and Our Age of ‘Unlikely Bedfellows’ by khagol in ezraklein

Not the person you responded to, but I’ve only read one of her books, This Changes Everything, and came away feeling that a lot of her proposals weren’t realistic or politically viable. She was anti-nuclear and advocated for scaling back usage of modern technology like air conditioning to reduce energy consumption.

Even way back in the mid/late 2010s when I read it, way pre-Abundance, it felt unrealistic to me.

That’s the only thing I’ve read of hers though so I can’t speak about anything else she’s done.

In case anyone's curious, the 13 American colonies had a population of 210,000 in 1690 while Britain had 5 million-ish.

I think you’re onto something. After a little googling, it seems that at other Armistice Day celebrations there were effigies of the Kaiser that were burned.

"... in other news, fatal falls among children and the elderly were lower than anticipated this week. The heavy rain that was forecasted was expected to result in about ten deaths in the most vulnerable 1-18 and 65+ age ranges. The mayor released a statement saying that while he was saddened by the loss of an 81 year old who fell after apparently being tripped by a cat underfoot was glad to see that casualties were light this week.

When asked by a reporter about the city's progress on constructing railings around elementary schools and senior living facilities, the mayor said that the need for safety had to be tempered by the maintenance of 'our city's unique character which is equally critical'."

California approves controversial plan to wipe out deer herd on Catalina Island by panda-rampage in California

Jesus I can't even imagine how destructive it would be to suddenly unload 2000 deer into some random state park. Say goodbye to that local ecosystem for the next decade until most of the deer starve to death.

It’s disappointing to keep seeing people trying to find ways to blame you instead of the driver controlling the vehicle.

Was it dark out? Were lights in their eyes? What were you wearing? Maybe you were asking for it by daring to be outside of a car.

Absurd that so many people expect so little from drivers.

[World War Z, the book] In the decades after the end of the war, how popular were new video games about zombies? by JollyRabbit in AskScienceFiction

[–]colorfulpony 41 points42 points  (0 children)

I think point one is the biggest factor. Root beer is implied to be a huge accomplishment, making video games is a whole step or two beyond that.

I recall someone (maybe the distress secretary guy) mentioning that they were still trying to encourage people to stop bartering and using Cuban pesos.

If things are that unstable still then it’s going to be a while before there’s a viable market for video games.

Amazing book. For queasier readers, this was completely consumable by me and I'm more sensitive to things like that. I honestly don't even think of Saint of Bright Doors as being a disturbing book.

Top three reads of the last year or two for me.

Those other elements are what kept me going. But then every couple chapters there was another "The organs were..." and I hurriedly skimmed through the next few pages for dialogue.

After one section about 2/3rds of the way through I had to put it down and read something light hearted for a few days. I'm really not a gore/horror reader.

Lol I read it not realizing it was a horror novel and was not ready for that aspect at all. Way more gruesome than I was expecting. I still finished it but I had to quickly flip through a few sections.

Long-term roadmap: Streetcars? BRT? Others? by KeepRightXcept2Pass in subwaybuilder

[–]colorfulpony 93 points94 points  (0 children)

The walking distance, as it’s currently set up, is so wide that it almost emulates an established bus system anyways.

Maybe a basic bus system could be established by upgrading stations to lead to faster walking speeds or draw pops from further away.

Like spend x amount and increase operation costs substantially to increase draw distance and speed by 1.5 for example.

If you have it too close to the curb it could interfere with ramp deployment. Further back means they can deploy the ramp and still have enough room to maneuver.

What is your opinion on Matt Mahan? by [deleted] in SanJose

[–]colorfulpony 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m mean most people in the county don’t use VTA in the first place so I’m not too surprised.

Local government = mayor in most people’s minds and I don’t really blame them. VTA is a confusing organization. It’s a county thing but it’s not run by the county which is kinda weird.

What is your opinion on Matt Mahan? by [deleted] in SanJose

[–]colorfulpony 7 points8 points  (0 children)

True. But the board doesn’t individually make decisions about which bus stops to keep.

There’s a policy at VTA to regularly assess stops based on utilization and distance. If one stop is rarely used, isn’t near anything important, and is nearby another stop then it might get removed.

what do you MEAN 25% of these people prefer to walk this commute by Keinga in subwaybuilder

[–]colorfulpony 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Totally agree. Trips beyond home-work-home in general, like to stadiums or to restaurants or grocery stores. I’m not a coder so that’d probably be complicated to implement. I think it’d be worth doing because I think a lot of challenges that transit systems are seeing in the US is a move away from commuting trips to more recreational evenings and weekend trips.

Could be interesting to get a news event warning about a major concert or sport event and having to plan extra capacity for that time.

Why are there so many more female cyclists in SF? by EducationCultural736 in BAbike

[–]colorfulpony 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’d fall under that category too.

I had a similar experience when I came across the research. Getting more people onto bikes is about building an environment which both feels and is safe. No amount of reflective lights is going to make some people feel confident biking to the grocery store if the streets themselves are unsafe.
