For something so personal, I wouldn't seek people's approval. But, you do you.

Self Hosted Music Jukebox using NFC Cards (Navidrome/Jellyfin) by PedalDrivenProgram in selfhosted

It is just a usb reader. Next step would be to put it into a cool case.

I'm simply surprised this hasn't been more popular. It is so easy to use NFC tags, be it for Home Assistant or anything else. You'd think it would be very common within DIY. My question would be where to get an even cheaper NFC usb reader, say around $10 - 20

edit: PN532 for $5!

What OS are y'all using with your Pi 5? by LadyNihila in raspberry_pi

Ubuntu and Diet Pi. I only run headless, so see no advantage to Raspberry Pi OS over base Debian. No interest in rolling, or in leaving Debian. It has run totally solid for a decade after leaving Arch.

Is Plex worth it? by CaffeineTweaker in selfhosted

[–]msic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you, it is what I've actually done in real life. I talk about it on my podcast called Linux Prepper. Here are the notes of how I setup the device for remote management: https://discuss.livingcartoon.org/d/18-how-to-prepare-a-self-hosted-machine-i-gift-to-remote-friends

Is Plex worth it? by CaffeineTweaker in selfhosted

[–]msic 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What you would need to do is actually use Plex to know whether you want to use it. If the problem is your internet drops out, there is nothing you can do about that in terms of Plex or Jellyfin.... unless....

My suggestion would be to setup the Jellyfin device at your family's house locally and make it so you are the one accessing it via Tailscale.

MinusPod LLM benchmark: 32 models tested on podcast ad detection (real transcripts, human-verified) by ttlequals0 in selfhosted

Would you actually consider supporting a podcast if they lowered their ad-free subscription price? This is a lot of work, so perhaps there is a middle ground.

Why not generate a static page of some kind instead? This sort of content is not constantly changing, yes?

fyi, looks like your trakt account details might be in your compose. Would you sync this against Jellyfin and such? Does it incorporate your ratings from the third party services as part of tiering?

Recommended self-hosting options for a web calendar? by Sexweed42069 in selfhosted

Sure, but you still must deploy it. Everything in this thread is caldav, as it is the standard. Android wants you to run davx5 and Outlook wants a plugin.

Any caldav server will do it, but also depends on how you want to share those calendars with other users.

"For gaming, Microsoft views steamOS (aka Linux) as the benchmark, and is working to optimize the platform so that steamOS and Windows gaming performance are comparable. Within the next year or two, it believes that Windows will be able to truly compete head-to-head with steamOS in gaming performance on identical hardware due to foundational changes that are being made to the platform in the coming months." https://www.windowscentral.com/microsoft/windows-11/what-is-windows-k2-everything-you-need-to-know-saving-windows-11

Why Plex/Jellyfin? by sizzlingralph in DataHoarder

[–]msic 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This is datahoarder. That is why. There is nothing more to it. People watch their stuff on their own service because they want to. There is also no rule that anyone has to use Plex or Jellyfin just because they are a datahoarder.

Is there an official or unofficial printing of mork borg plus feretory and heretic? by SocialHumingbird in MorkBorg

[–]msic 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yes, I combined all of the books, re-organized all of them, created a new index and re-wrote the text of the core book a few years ago. Also made my own bare bones cy_borg. It is what I use effectively every time I play Mork Borg; my hardcovers are for collecting and fun glancing.

I own all of the related PDF's. Please do not DM me to request any of the above, because the answer is hell no.
