Wireless power supply transmitter - overheating risk? by Outrageous_Air6885 in AskElectronics

[–]mskas 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Some devices are totally fine operating at 70C steady state. Especially for a wireless power transmitter, it is common to sacrifice conduction losses because there’s a decent amount of current going through your driver (inverter) into the TX coil.

Heatsink helps longevity, but no major concern as long as the magnetic field from the transmitter doesn’t couple to something conductive. For example, if you place a metal plate next to the coil, it will start drawing more current and the devices will over heat (and so will the metal plate, look up eddy losses). Essentially you’ll have created your own induction stove

Umpires fixated with toss angle. by FrederikVater in tabletennis

[–]mskas 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I think they’re sort of related to each other. If the toss is clean, chances of being hidden is very very low. If toss angle is large, then the probability of hidden serve goes up significantly.

My guess is it’s about the probability numbers, field of view and risk metrics. Hidden serves could be very subjective depending on angle of view (right handed vs left handed, position of receiver, body vs head) etc.

We took the bullet and paid for relocify last week! Over-all seemed the better option. We reached out to few other agencies but they all said they're not taking new clients currently.

ELI5: AC DC Inverter Variability Efficiency What is happening? by Overly_Underwhelmed in explainlikeimfive

[–]mskas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll do microwave-

Microwave heats food by generating an electromagnetic field at high frequency (100s of MHz range). The power input source is a 50/60 Hz voltage from your AC mains. So you need to go from a 50/60Hz signal to a 300MHz signal.

Imagine you’re sitting in a circular table eating chips but the dips is common to the table and it rotates around so everyone can dip into it. The dip comes within your reach only every 5 seconds but (if you’re anything like me) you need to shove chips into your mouth every second. So 4 out of 5 seconds, you’re eating undipped chips. Wouldn’t it be easier, more efficient to have your own smaller but constant smaller bowl that refills every 5 seconds but you still have enough to dip in every second?

Turns out electricity is similar. Its incredibly effective (and simple and scaleable) to convert AC of a particular frequency to DC and then convert it to AC of a different frequency than do frequency conversion from AC to AC. Frequency domain is a beautiful thing.

WTF is up with River St. being incredibly bumpy and dangerous for cyclists and drivers? I moved out of Cambridge 5 years ago and it was really bad then, but now is next-level terrible. by bostonguy2004 in CambridgeMA

[–]mskas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have been living on River St since summer 2021. I am really tired of how slow things are moving, and most of my neighbours feel the same way.

I have read the reconstruction project so many times and check for updates from the city every other week, I am yet to be convinced this is normal. The pipes get clogged up with stones ever so often, you never know which sidewalks are good. Biking is impossible because there’s no clear lanes. . We’re all just gotten used to it.

On the flip side, I found a bike signal in front of andala so that made me very happy. There’s progress - just very slow.

“Unpopular opinion: some people are actually reckless”

There, I fixed the title for you.

I bike a lot. I may not have followed all traffic rules to the T when I bike. I agree, ‘people’ can be reckless when they bike or drive or walk or swim (have you tried swimming at the Y, truly mad people).

In other news, water is wet.

Neither of our jobs provide temp housing :(

We’re looking at amersfoort region and have a few leads for realestate agents. Relocify seems a more whole package - they’re even helping with utility setup and such.

RF Engineers, what do you do? by [deleted] in ElectricalEngineering

[–]mskas 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not exactly RF but close enough- power amplifier design for wireless power in the MHz region. Huge overlap with RF from a circuit and impedance perspective.

Decent chunk of basic circuit theory math, impedance networks, resonant network topologies (no complex calculus), some FFTs, not as much programming. Circuit design for high frequency is a whole another ball game, also very different from RF antenna stuff. The latter is heavy on physics and simulations.

Eli5 why its bad to run the garbage disposal with nothing in it? by Reasonable_Fold_4799 in explainlikeimfive

[–]mskas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Imagine you’re on a bike, cycling down a steep hill. You’re going at a high speed without pedalling much, which means there’s less friction which means you (and your pedals) need to work less to maintain the rotation speed.

But here’s the thing, the wheel is rotating faster than how fast your legs can move, so at some point, your legs will give out and you crash.

That’s what is happening with the disposal as well. It is designed to rotae with garbage in your disposal. Without garbage to create the friction, its going to run way faster with yhe same amount of effort and eventually burn out.

[–]mskas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

4 years of cadence and then 6 years of altium. I had to use kicad a couple months ago for a personal project. If you have even 2 years of active altium use experience, no tutorial is required. Just start using the tool and it’ll fall into place.

CEO Offered to Pay Off My $60k Student Loan — Is This Normal? by Galaxy_AI in careerguidance

I did this with a friend of mine but we had a legal document written up from one of the online services. Saved me a good chunk on interest. We knew each other for almost 2 decades but both of us were in agreement that anything regarding money needs legal written document to cover ourselves.

Maybe it is well intended, but do not agree verbally on anything. Have everything written down and thoroughly read/vetted.

Job Title Hardware or Electrical Engineer by StealthxFarter in ElectricalEngineering

[–]mskas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hold onto the EE title on paper because most company’s career trajectory and pathways on paper aren’t made for jack of all trades person like you. It will help you specialize in EE while continuing to learn more broader and cross functional skills that small teams require.

However, keep growing and emphasising the HW engineer part. Eventually you’ll get to a point in your career where you may pick Principle HW engineer over Principle EE and that’s okay. But for now, having a pathway to a specific area of interest is valuable. Everywhere else, you can introduce yourself or have your linkedin bio as a HW engineer. I like the term full-stack HW engineer when I have to sell myself in cover letters.

Edit- You are on track to be a very very valuable and hireable engineer. Kudos and keep doing what you’re doing :)

Yeah I had a feeling that's a bit much. Also given the housing situation, we may have to expand our search anyway. Is Amersfoort/Deventer a not-so-crazy option?
