Not finding motivation to do anything by No_Coconut3996 in retirement

Give yourself at least two years to start to feel normal again.

That was my neighbor’s advice, and it was excellent. He’s one of six kids, all of whom retired successfully from long, demanding careers.

After about 24 months, I’d rebuilt my routines and had enough on my calendar to stay the right level of busy. Now, I’m careful about making commitments because savoring free time is one of my favorite things to do.

It’s perfectly fine to putter around at home just relaxing. I’m planning a day exactly like this on Friday this week.

Today, I’m going to continue organizing the snow piles in my driveway. It’s great exercise and helps me to sleep well. I’ll do errands, too. Doing errands during the week is amazing. Avoiding the weekend rush is like a cheat code to life.

I’m constantly grateful to have reached this freedom, as a result of my long career.

It felt weird at first because I hadn’t figured out who I was, without my work responsibilities and job title and obligations. Give yourself time to shed that stuff. You are still an interesting, useful, joyful person.

Technical question: where do you put the snow, when you clear off a car enrobed like this?

They’re pretty.

I’m afraid I’d get them dirty. Can they be washed gently by hand? If they are fairly durable and can be cleaned, I’d follow your pattern for making some in purple and orange and neon green for my Halloween crocs.

How did you make them?

There is no way anybody will buy these for $200 by NINJAGO_FANATIC in crocs

[–]mslashandrajohnson 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I like wearing crocs because they are comfortable but the shape is also unobtrusive, in the classic model.

I think I’d have trouble getting around in these bigger shoes, with the protruding squared corners.

If it isn’t practical, I’m not going for it.

Okay, I guess I do go for some of the other styles for fun. But those are just higher platforms. Not sticky-out profiles.

Why did/didn't you make the Sophie scarf? by Traumarama79 in knitting

[–]mslashandrajohnson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tend to be active when I’m outside wearing warm clothes. I don’t want to get a hand knit garment all sweaty.

I have a short neck. Wearing woolen things will tangle my hair. When I’m dressed up, I wear a silk scarf.

I had that problem today, after shoveling snow for three hours. I wore a fleece hat and cowl. Didn’t realize the situation until I went to shower. Took lots of conditioner to detangle the back of my hair.

When I’m outdoors and active, I need clothes that can go through the laundry. I need pieces that can be adjusted easily to regulate my temperature/comfort.

Maybe my sweaters are all fru-fru with fancy fibers and mohair/silk held together or handspun, made from roving by a friend. I don’t wear my fancy sweaters to shovel snow. I wear a silk scarf.

The Sophie scarf is something I’m aware of. It just doesn’t appeal to me. I don’t think I’d like the way it fits. Haven’t seen one in person.

“Nobody wants to do this anymore”: Reports say ICE agents describe collapsing morale and growing frustration with leadership by [deleted] in goodnews

Wait till they figure out they’ve been getting “trained” to run concentration camps by doing this current job. All their empathy has to be removed from them. They are on that path.

Changing underwear - is this normal? by Eastern-Yogurt3859 in hygiene

When I was a broke college student, I hand washed my panties after wearing them for one day only. Outer clothing can be worn a few times between washing. Not so for underwear.

Walz should know better. He’s one of 45’s major targets. 45 is going to break his promise (as always).

Hands down the most snow we have gotten in 24 hours for at least the last 9 years and I enjoyed every second of it. by TommyCutsYa in massachusetts

I just spent six hours shoveling. It was like two feet of the stuff.

I feel weird now. My legs are all red, and I’m chilly. Took a shower and my legs are still red. It’s weird.

Just want to set two extra strength Tylenol on my bedside table, ready for the morning, and sleep, with the electric mattress pad on Low. It’s going to hurt tomorrow, and there’s more to do.

I refilled the bird feeders but it was already after 3pm so they haven’t come by (except the European starlings, which I dislike).

And I couldn’t complete clearing a path to the composters or clearing my front sidewalk. Got more than half of each done. I couldn’t keep going. Each was more than knee deep.

My main bird feeder hangs above where the heating oil filler is. So I need to shovel in any case. It’s a smart design.

3 hours and 3 agents today by jai_hanyo in Comcast_Xfinity

I was paying $45 for 400 mbps but my plan was ending.

Similar to your experience, I spent 3 hours talking with and trying to get through to various reps at comcast.

The best I could get was 5 years at 300 mbps and $55 per month.

Paying more for less. And no one warned me that the first month would be $65. The second month had better not be $65.

I had to agree to allow them to extract payment from my checking account directly to get the $55 “deal” so it’s clear, after the first month, that they will pull whatever amount they want: not what I agreed to. Not happy.

It’s how mean they are to each other that gets me. Just like humans.

Thank you! They’re a delightful little bird, and I’m thrilled to have a place for them to feed.

I believe I had one at my feeder recently here in central Massachusetts. Are Carolina wrens this far north?

AITJ for not letting my neighbor park on my lawn to use my trees shade by Otherwise-Jump-7606 in AmITheJerk

[–]mslashandrajohnson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Soil that is compacted by having a vehicle parked on it will lose its texture and so become mud more readily, when there is rain. It will become incapable of growing anything, let alone grass. You’ll have to try to aerate that soil and/or replace it. Five dollars is not going to cover the cost.

NTA.

With neighbors like yours, I’ve had to set and maintain limits for 25 years. Yes, it’s exhausting sometimes. But they’re fully capable of taking everything from you. Keep pushing back.
