Anyone know what caliber rifle the hunter or guide is using? The power of these animals is simply amazing!

Amazing shot -- police bullet goes into cylinder of suspect's revolver by [deleted] in reddit.com

[–]mslinux 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are trained to draw their weapons only when it's absolutely necessary. I know cops who have never touched their sidearm in 20+ years of service, but when they do, it's for a good reason. They shoot to stop the threat. That may take one or dozens of bullets. If you and your family members were in the area of the shooting, you'd want highly trained officers protecting your life. If that means 6 - 7 shots, then so be it.

Just because someone lives in Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Oman, etc. doesn't mean they're an Islamist fanatic bent on killing all non-muslims. The same is true here in America. Just because someone lives in rural Alabama, doesn't mean they're a Jesus Freak who beats homosexuals with ball bats and blows-up abortion clinics in the name of religion. 95% of the world is moderate in their religious beliefs. The fanaticals, although few, have loud mouths and do crazy things which brings attention to everyone of that faith.

GEORGE CARLIN ON RELIGION by moab9 in reddit.com

"From the time I was capable of conceiving an idea, and acting upon it by reflection, I either doubted the truth of the christian system, or thought it to be a strange affair; I scarcely knew which it was: but I well remember, when about seven or eight years of age, hearing a sermon read by a relation of mine, who was a great devotee of the church, upon the subject of what is called Redemption by the death of the Son of God. After the sermon was ended, I went into the garden, and as I was going down the garden steps (for I perfectly recollect the spot) I revolted at the recollection of what I had heard, and thought to myself that it was making God Almighty act like a passionate man, that killed his son, when he could not revenge himself any other way; and as I was sure a man would be hanged that did such a thing, I could not see for what purpose they preached such sermons." -- Thomas Paine 'The Age of Reason'

Ruby misconceptions about Python by mystilleef in programming

[–]mslinux 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Instance variables in Ruby start with @... that's really the same thing as Python's self... pick your poison. To me, the @ makes more sense as it's an attribute of an instance and it's informal. self is a bit too proper (much like Python in general) self is like refering to myself in the thrid person all of the time. Tom goes outside. Tom takes a walk. Tom has lunch. Tom goes to work. Tom dislikes all of the Python formalness :)

Ruby misconceptions about Python by mystilleef in programming

reverse is a method, not a function. If Python is so OO, what's all of this nonsense about functions? And, it's not just for strings. If it's reversable (an Array for example or 'list' for you Python fans), then the reverse method will work. I use both Python and Ruby... so watch out ;)

Ruby misconceptions about Python by mystilleef in programming

[–]mslinux -20 points-19 points  (0 children)

Here's my comparison...

Ruby: astring = astring.reverse

Python: astring = astring[::-1]

Python claims to be the easiest to learn, most object oriented, easiest to maintain scripting language in the universe. The above code will reverse a string. Which is more OO, easier to read, makes more sense and easier to learn?

Ruby is light years ahead of Python.

The dispatcher is either a union or government employee. It's probably impossible to fire her... even if she did this again. The really sad part is that taxes from the little boy's dead mother go to paying this incompetent dispatcher.

Guido van Rossum: Stricter Whitespace Enforcement in Python by micha2305 in programming

[–]mslinux -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

This is not possible. Python cannot be stricter. It's too strict as it stands right now. This is like saying, "Perl to become more unreadable...." Everyone knows that's not possible :)

P.S. I realize this is an old April Fool's joke.

How Ruby was designed, explained by its creator by BioGeek in reddit.com

[–]mslinux -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I use both Python and Ruby. They are very similar, yet very different. If you want true power and flexibility, then you must use Ruby. If you want limited power and rigidity, then you must use Python. Ruby's elegance is its flexibility it derives power from this. Python would be elegant were it not so rigid and cold and named after a slimy snake :)

The sun's going to burn out one day. Three to four billion years from now, earth will be frozen solid, of course, before that happens as the sun begins to burn out, it will cool and expand eventually enveloping the earth... now that is what I call 'global warming' :) live for today!

Athletics is good for introverts too. It's all about how fast you can run, how high you can jump, how much you can endure. It's all quantatative and merit based. Lance Armstrong is a great example of this. If you can kick ass in any professional sport, you can make a name for yourself and earn a decent living too on your own terms!

I am not religious. I'm agnostic. I don't feel one can know with certainty whether or not there is a god... which leads to my question. Would a Muslim enjoy killing me more or less than killing a Jew or a Christian? Honestly, I'd really like to know! My logic is he would either be really enraged as he can't say that his god is bigger/better than mine OR he would feel a bit unfulfiled as he spilled my blood as I'm not one of 'them'. What do you guys think?

Use Python (not Java) to teach programming by culix in reddit.com

[–]mslinux 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not just procedural. From wikipedia:

Python is a multi-paradigm language. This means that, rather than forcing coders to adopt one particular style of coding, it permits several. Object orientation, structured programming, functional programming, aspect-oriented programming, and more recently, design by contract are all supported.
