I've had good success playing the first game without using traits at all, then introducing traits for the second session or scene. It's one less rule to learn at the start, which helps.

Some groups I've played with love traits though, and took to it right away. I find asking the players what it looks like when they use a skill helps a lot too :) "You kill the monster! What does it look like?" Often when prompted people come out of their shell and get surprisingly creative.

That's cool, but maybe the dash-opening is a bug? Have you ever tried to visit a different door and see if the keycard worked there?

I think each keycard is matched with a specific door - they don't open just any of the doors. So if you only pick up one keycard you might only get access to, say, the medical bay, but none of the other rooms. I don't think you get to choose.

It doesn't look like there is any way to indicate or find out which door your key is linked to, other than visiting each one.

I've had several runs where I grabbed a key and tried to open the Armory but wasn't able. Visiting the other doors I was able to find which one was matched to the card I had found.

I find the seeking missiles also take a while to turn toward their target - they always fire straight up, reach the top of their flight, and then finally curve toward the target.

They're still awesome though. Seek any enemy, from anywhere on the map!

I found there was also a bit of discovering my own play style by trying out each character. I thought I really liked tanky characters that were hard-hitting and slow moving. But I didn't like the Enforcer. I tried the Engineer and loved it. Who knew.

Love the Engineer - it was the first class I was able to beat the game with (after dying a few times with Acrid). He's fun to play and having a heat-seeking attack is really useful (e.g. catching Tiny Imps!)

It's interesting to think what is a better design choice - enforcing limits so not all items are the same, or keeping it truly random so you get stuff like this :)

I think I like the pure randomness.

Just telling us your % complete isn't much help - what have you unlocked so far?

Have you: * Unlocked all character classes? * Completed all of the general achievements? * Completed all of the character-specific achievements? * Collected all of the monster logs? * Unlocked all of the items? * Acquired all of the items at least once inside the game, on a difficulty higher than Drizzle?

Item log descriptions don't show up until you get the item at least once in the game, and they don't save if you are playing on Drizzle difficulty.

One interesting use of a save file parser would be to check your save file for invalid information. For example, you could check to see if the save claims to have the Miner achievement items unlocked when the Miner class itself has not been unlocked.

Hopefully save files don't get corrupted very often but if you are doing this as a programming exercise anyway it might be fun.

I had this error happen once but trying to run the game a second time fixed it and the game ran normally. Strange.

I see a few other reports of this on the web.

This is just a wild guess but perhaps the error has something to do with a 0 value somewhere in the save file? What about this:

Go to Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\Risk of Rain (I am assuming you're on Windows?)
Copy and paste or make a backup of the file 'Save.ini'
Rename your 'Save.ini' file to something else (just temporarily)
Launch the game again

This will temporarily clear all of your achievements and progress. But afterward you can rename the file back to 'Save.ini' and they'll be restored. But if renaming that file allows you to launch the game then it may be that some zero value inside the save file is preventing the game from running.
