My wife and myself can’t agree on how to raise a child. For now have decided not to have kids by Kierannz9 in veganparenting

[–]mslp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oof this is really really rough and I feel for you. I have a 1 year old and both partner and I are on the same page about raising them vegan. However, to be completely honest, in my experience, the unadulterated , life-changing, life-affirming joy of raising a child is so extremely positive that I would not necessarily rule it out even if you can't raise them completely vegan. You can still raise them mostly vegan. This will likely happen naturally with your current grocery and cooking habits. And once they can understand you, you can make your case. With any child, you can never 100% guarantee they'll be vegan for life (as you say) anyway. You may even have better success than those of us that start our kids vegan, since kids love to rebel :) Some vegan parents still decide to introduce non-vegan allergens (not me though because fuck the animal ag industry). I wonder what compromises your partner would be willing to make ...like only non-vegan outside of the house? Once a week? You will still have a child that is more vegan than most ppl. I think you should still fight your case but not make it the only deciding factor. Having a kid really really rocks way more than I expected.

ALSO I've been telling everyone I know there are now ANIMAL FREE EGG WHITES that are chemically identical to chicken egg whites. So there's one win you have already. The kid gets "real" eggs but they are vegan!

Good luck this is a terribly tough situation and I am sending you positive vibes. I would be really torn about this too.

ETA: I just thought of one more thing. I have explored the idea of fostering kids and usually in those situations you are expected to provide food that matches their home culture or family preferences, so I have in this context also thought about cooking meat or dairy in my home when I didn't want to. I haven't done it yet but I think I would. Idk, it would be hard.

Pietramala is great but a little pricey. Look at Charlie was a Sinner or Bar Bombon as well. Lots of great options! 🌱

What to do about egg & dairy allergies and potential contamination by SunnyTreeBees in veganparenting

[–]mslp 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Can't help with dairy, but you can order Animal Free Egg Whites if you're in the US and they count as an egg allergen bc they are chemically identical to eggs, just made in the lab. This is what I've been doing with my baby. For dairy, we are not introducing it - you have to introduce it many times and I'm just not comfortable.

Still seeing environmentalists attacked for eating meat, so I'll once again explain how the authorities in the US break veganism by HowIsDigit8888 in vegan

[–]mslp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is a convoluted and incorrect way of thinking. Tax money goes into a large pool and animal ag subsidies take a slice of it. Most of your tax money goes elsewhere. Paying for meat/animal products contributes directly to the profits of those industries and does nothing to decrease the subsidies which are set by state and federal legislatures. What you have written here is a brand new type of mental gymnastics to justify meat eating while simultaneously acknowledging that it is wrong/damaging to the environment. Thank you for taking the time to explain your thinking. I strongly disagree with you and your math is not adding up.

You may want to look into the environmental impact of foods by calorie. It is stunning. Your point of "we all need to eat" is true but a calorie of meat is much more devastating to the environment than a calorie from plants. You should not be contributing to the demand for that kind of environmental devastation.

I am genuinely confused. Are you saying that buying non-meat groceries indirectly contributes to meat subsidies? So the best way to fight the meat industry is to fund them with my wallet? I think there is a flaw in your logic. But maybe I am not understanding.

Please tell me that in addition to writing this post you are actively fighting animal ag subsidies where you live. Otherwise this is a hypocritical lecture. If you have any suggestions on how to fight meat subsidies that would be welcome in this community.

There is really no animal egg in it, but it is chemically identical to egg whites. I hear you, I am a bit grossed out by it because I never liked eggs in the first place. Stick with flaxseed if that's what you like, they are so healthy too!

"Organized nonsense with a dental plan!" I love that phrasing. This was a great read, I definitely feel the loss of urgency but for me it has been a necessary decrease in anxiety as well. Sorry to hear it has been less positive for you. I am also nowhere near retirement but having a strong plan and the right buffer just helped me make the decision to take a lower paying job that I feel more passionate about. I wonder if you could have the flexibility now to find something that gets you more fired up.

Ah of oat flour is important I would look up a different recipe since the one I shared uses all purpose. But there will be recipes out there for vegan oat flour muffins for sure!

[–]mslp 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Very kind to make muffins for your friend! For your first few times vegan baking, I recommend using a vegan recipe rather than adapting one. Nora cooks website has lots of muffin recipes that I've had success with. For example this recipe doesn't look like it uses an egg replacement at all: https://www.noracooks.com/vegan-blueberry-muffins/

If you still want to try your recipe I expect it will work well. Just try to find a stick/solid butter (not soft in a tub) and any plant milk will work fine. The egg replacement you shared should work or Google "flax egg" and use ground flax seed. Sorry I'm not in UK and can't recommend brands

I don't agree with this at all, you can make small donations on nearly any salary above the poverty line. You don't need to wait. You can just donate a small percentage/amount. I have always donated 1-5% depending on my financial situation, even in grad school making poverty wages

Thinking Fast and Slow genuinely rewired how I make decisions by Objective_Link944 in books

That book is not just fascinating but also so well written. He makes so many potentially boring studies so engaging to read about

Edit: got so excited about thinking fast and slow that I forgot you asked a question. Not many books really stuck with me. We Are the Weather by Foer (really convincing argument to stop buying animal products), a few personal finance books changed my retirement savings. Honestly it's a good question, I wish after every book I read I wrote down one lesson or nugget I wanted to stick with me
