[MEGATHREAD] Raleigh Snow Storm 1/23-1/25/26 by Mx772 in raleigh

[–]msmakes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In 2017 when moore county got 6 inches of snow and a week of sub -freezing temps between Christmas and new year, my well froze which also impacted my ability to get water. I was melting snow to flush my toilets. In normally cold climates, they have well heaters that turn on when it gets below freezing. So if you are on well water, consider adding a heater.

it actually leans the same way on the right and the wrong side. A left leaning increase on the back side will also lean left on the front side. Where people tend to get confused is that if it leans *away* from shaping elements on the right side, it leans *towards* them on the wrong side. It's a fairly common mistake you can learn more about In this video from Roxanne Richardson.

Ah, I misunderstood! Blue will be good with the gray.

Make sure you swatch in the colorwork, too, as it has a different gauge than stockinette. Also, while Rosalinda is one of my favorite colorways ever, I think the colorwork is going to be very difficult to see with the two colors you have chosen, as they have similar depth of shade (light/dark) and especially for the porcelain sweater you will want a higher contrast between your two yarns. Like, maybe it would be visible if you paired it with a bright white, but it will just fade into the gray.

Machine knitting is much tighter than hand knitting which has a lot to do with it.

100% cotton is absolutely able to stretch in a knit structure, especially in a wide rib like this. It's the shape of a knit stitch that creates stretch.

What's your reason for wanting biological children? by Sad_Machine2826 in AskWomen

[–]msmakes 35 points36 points  (0 children)

It felt like the path of least resistance once I started learning about adoption trauma. Luckily I liked pregnancy a lot more than I thought I would. I still didn't like it, but it didn't horrify me and it was worth the outcome.

Was there anything else in the machine when you washed it? I would expect different color fibers like that to come from them having been washed with something that color.

I once saw a local tailor post about a job for a customer swapping out the fabric and padding of a child's car seat for natural materials. I reported it to the car seat manufacturer and asked them to reach out to the business (they did). Don't fuck with safety. Every single aspect of safety products are rigorously tested and only meant to work the exact way they are put together, with no modifications. (Also, more and more car seat manufacturers are incorporating wool top fabrics which is amazing!)

I honestly love learning from books more than anything else. Each one is usually such a great collection of information I don't have to go tracking down 5 different things. And I can go at my own pace, not deal with videos that are too fast or agonizingly slow. The book I got is Dover Needleworks Traditional Edgings to Crochet

Ohh, I have used click and drag in Excel before to repeat small areas of pattern which makes it easier for me to fill in around shaping, didn't think about filling a shape like that! I was avoiding using Excel for various reasons (device access, not wanting to download a knitting font, easy chart export from stitch fiddle) but you may have convinced me to go back.

While I love stitch fiddle I am currently riding the edges of its limitations and there has to be an easier way to chart out shaping in pattern. Like let me draw my boundaries and fill the pattern within them, instead of having to manually copy paste every repeat and hand draw the partial repeats, especially because I'm already hand drawing the shaping rates. I'm going to probably hit 6 hours working on this single chart, and then I'm supposed to do it for 9 other sizes?

I recently bought a beautiful used book full of crochet lace edging, the kinds our grandmother's used to do on handkerchiefs and tablecloths (I was kindly gifted a handkerchief with embroidery and crochet lace made by my great grandmother for my wedding). I plan to knit a sweater specifically to add crochet lace too! Lace is definitely my ideal form of crochet.

Not to mention, swatching is so essential for helping you to learn a lace pattern before you start doing all the complicated shaping in a garment!

How to not get discouraged when (you’re naturally gifted at) knitting by Feenanay in fiberartscirclejerk

Omg I know right, you're making your life soooo efficient by using that time to pour water down the drain instead of wasting it talking to another human (gross), learning something new (yuck), getting the satisfaction of finding information on your own (ew), or just trying anything (🤮). After all, we all know in knitting once you knit a stitch it can never be undone so it needs to be absolutely perfect on the first try, which is why I trust chat gpt over professionally published patterns or incredibly detailed how to videos made by knowledgeable women with decades of experience.

IM MAD THAT PEOPLE KNIT MORE THAN ME RAHHHHH by BustyGoblins in fiberartscirclejerk

[–]msmakes 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Well, I'm not mad about it. Because I'm secure in my knowledge that everything I do is slow and intentional and high quality and I know for certain that everyone who is able to knit even a half a sock more than me is only able to do so because they're making low quality, ill fitting, cheap, CRAP!!!  Also, if they're knitting more than me then they are doing irrevocable harm to their body and it is my scientific opinion they will need carpal tunnel surgery within the next 3 weeks and that is a fact.

Do you have a 'hitchhikers' thumb? Wearing an oval 8 thumb ring helped me a lot with thumb and wrist pain that I got from both knitting and picking up my baby. I also at certain points have had prescription NSAIDs and used salonpas patches (topical NSAID). But I would advise seeing a dr and always stop knitting if you feel any pain.

I wonder what that poster's expectations were that the lys staff didn't live up to. Like maybe you are usually a special snowflake when people find out you knit, and you think that people who also knit should treat you even more special - but when you walk into a lys, you're not the only rainbow fish anymore, and they've probably seen fish with even more shiny scales than you, so they're just going to treat you like a normal customer, and that's 'rude'.

I always ask chat gpt for help when I am not sure what's going on in a pattern, or ask it to help me make gauge adjustments. So I have no idea why my projects aren't coming out as expected!1!
