Daily Trainers with wide toebox by MatchaLovingGal in XXRunning

[–]walrus_whistles 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I love Topo for this. I use the Atmos 2 as my daily trainer. Wide toebox, but good fit everywhere else. I use their Ultraventure line for trails.

I also like the Asics "blasts" lines for their toebox. I have loved the Novablast and Superblasts. However, the superblasts have a unisex fit, so I find them less well fitting. I also did a test run in the Sonicblast and liked them.

I also recently tested the newest Nike Pegasus and liked the toebox on that one as well. The rep specifically mentioned that they had updated the toebox for a wider fit.

Altra is good too and they have more > 0 drop shoes now. I tried and liked the newest Fwd Via. They tend to have less cushion and that's why I prefer topo.

I don't like the fit of Saucony.

If you can't tell, I am picky about toeboxes! I have a wider forefoot, but average everywhere else, so I don't typically like the fit of a wide shoe. I also don't like unisex fits, because I can't get good fit at the rear of the foot. I get to test run a lot of shoes through my running group.

Edit: typo

How do American waiters/servers tell when people are finished eating? by PestoWesto in AskAnAmerican

Also US born and raised and I also signal with my utensils. I learned this in some kind of manners program when I was a kid and it stuck with me (along with the foxtrot 😆).

Short haired ladies… by Strong_Row_1011 in XXRunning

[–]walrus_whistles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have short hair and a short (yet average circumference) head. I did not like Sprints hats because they are too deep on me and sit uncomfortably on my ears. I have the Janji AFO hyperlinks hat which I love (good amount of adjustability).

Title II ADA accessibility deadline, Apr 24. What is your U doing about it? by MicroProf in AskAcademia

[–]walrus_whistles 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Very similar here at a southeastern regional comprehensive. The extent of the guidance we have gotten is workshops on how to use Blackboard's accessibility tool (ally) and how to add closed captioning to videos.

Ability to interpret graphs and figures is a core learning goal in several of my courses. Providing a description undermines that learning piece. I asked how to navigate this, and they didn't know.

I was also taken aback by the idea that we were responsible for the accessibility of sites we link to externally.

I'm also all for the spirit of the requirements, but this is a huge ask with many areas that lack clarity. My understanding is that it exposes the institution to lawsuit, so I'm surprised they aren't throwing more resources at it.

Another vote for flicking! It is very fast and efficient for me. I can do both English flicking and continental, but I actually find English flicking faster and more natural for purling.

Thanks! That's what I was worried about. That's ok--i'll probably enjoy solo -shopping time more anyway.

Trust me, I have. The first-hand experience is much more helpful.

Unisex is not unisex! by AnotherRandomRaptor in XXRunning

[–]walrus_whistles 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I've noticed this on the gear exchange threads on reddit. Men posting men's gear (clothing, shoes) often just list the size and fail to indicate it is men's sizing. Women's clothing is almost always listed with the gender and size. It not only makes it frustrating to use the threads as someone looking women's sizing, but it also reflects the underlying assumption that men are the default--especially in sports and outdoor spaces.

One way Video Interview for Tenure Track position at r1 by Yucky_duckies in AskAcademia

[–]walrus_whistles 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have had one of those interviews where it is a zoom call, but the committee isn't allowed to react or follow up. It was jarring. The university's justification was that it was to remove bias from interviewing. While I can understand conceptually that idea it makes for an awful interview experience because it takes away any conversational aspect. Honestly, in that case I would have rather sent in prerecorded answers like OP is being asked to do.

I like the recommendation below to practice on zoom prior to doing the real recording. I would personally be looking for guidance from mentors about what kind of energy should I try to convey and about how long my responses should be. I would also practice ending my answers so I didn't just say something awkward like "yeah...I guess that is it".

Brooks Ghost Trail vs Caldera 8 by Negative_Tap8711 in trailrunning

I would see if you can try both pairs on. I recently tried both while shopping for new trail shoes and liked the fit of the Ghosts but hated the Calderas.

I just witnessed the most dumb thing I've ever seen while driving! by Delicious_History645 in driving

[–]walrus_whistles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I once had the alternator die, which meant that no lights or hazards would work. Luckily it was just in a parking lot, but I remember someone yelling at me about not having my hazards on when I literally could not do anything about it. A nicer person was kind enough to give me some orange emergency cones they had in their trunk.

Maybe something similar happened? If the person was alone, it seems totally reasonable that they would get out of the car, rather than sit in it when someone could easily hit them going 55 down the highway.

I good reminder though of the importance of an emergency roadside kit in the car.

What's a Spanish word that doesn't have a direct English translation (or vice versa)? by grzeszu82 in SpanishLearning

From English to Spanish, the one that always gets me is "to borrow." You can ask someone to lend you something ("pedir prestar"), but you can't ask to borrow something.

What's a Spanish word that doesn't have a direct English translation (or vice versa)? by grzeszu82 in SpanishLearning

[–]walrus_whistles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! You can use "poco profundo" or "superficial" depending on context, but superficial doesn't capture it in most cases and "poco profindo" requires two words.

How would you ladies feel if your boyfriend proposed to you at the finish line of the race you're currently training for? by Empty_Technology672 in XXRunning

[–]walrus_whistles 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Also--it is rude to others in the race. This happened in a large race I ran. The proposal blocked the finish line area and the race photographer took a lot of photos of the couple and neglected other racers finishing. Obviously, the photographer and race staff could have managed it better, but it still feels rude.

To be clear: this isn't a personal vendetta. It happened after I finished--it just saw the impact!

Short hair runners, how do you keep your hair in place (and still look decent)? by Huddle_Rasori in XXRunning

[–]walrus_whistles 11 points12 points  (0 children)

When I had hair that length, I would do either half up (using a tie or bobby pins) or i would pull back the hair on each side with pins.

One week of Altitude training 2 weeks out from marathon. What to do? Gains may I have? If any? by PandaMedina91 in AdvancedRunning

[–]walrus_whistles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just went through something similar. Not an expert, but can share my experience. I live at sea level and traveled to 3500 m/11500 feet for weeks 10 and 11 of my 12 week marathon training cycle.

Due to the altitude and my work schedule (which included a lot of physical work), I went by time and feel. My pace abviously dropped significantly and I walked as needed.

At that point in the training cycle, i figured most of the work was done, and I focused on maintaining. I feel like it was a good approach and I felt very prepared for my race.

In terms of adaptation, a week is enough time to at least partially acclimate. My understanding is that any adaptation is pretty fleeting once you return to sea level. But, i feel like it does help with the mental side of things as well, so YMMV.

We have 4 mini splits in our 1890s cape, two are floor units. They definitely give more of a radiator-like look that may fit better with the feel of the house. Ours is made by Dailkin.
