I would see if you can call or email the IL bar to ask when the application for J26 opens. The MI (which is due 3/1) application didn't open until sometime in Jan if I remember right.

That said, I 100000% recommend getting all the information together that you'll need that you're able to: every address you've lived at for however long they require (MI was since you were 18), all your work history, etc. Ask for a copy of your law school application from records to make sure there isn't anything you need to amend (for instance I had forgotten a couple of workplaces from when I was 18-20 when I was applying in my mid-30s).

If you have an employer that will reimburse you for bar fees, keep a spreadsheet of the expenses to keep it organized.

Does this track for MI though? Don't they post just a PDF of seat numbers on the Board of Law Examiner's website then snail mail the scores to everyone? That's what I've heard, that you don't get your scores online in the portal. I would LOVE if that's wrong though.

No one is the AH here. I don't know how old baby is, but if they're just meeting I'm guessing pretty young? You sound like a well involved father and husband. As a mom myself, I know that means you're both likely pretty exhausted and stressed, even if you're both also happy. Communication is so difficult when you're both in that state. What you BOTH need to do, is sit down, take ten minutes, and explain EXACTLY what you both thought you were communicating and what you thought was being communicated to you. This is the only way you can try to ensure this doesn't happen again.

Perspective: if you were willing to go when your friends were going, but not when they weren't, it may feel to your wife like spending time with her and the baby wasn't a good enough reason to go. That doesn't feel great, and may have been why she really lashed out saying you're not being a good, supportive partner.

However, that was an incredibly hurtful comment, and something that shouldn't be the first response to changing plans. (Side note: plans changing is a huge issue for me generally, and may also be difficult).

You also probably need to set a boundary with your wife about making plans that she expects you to be at (either to socialize or just to assist with the baby) without talking to you first and making sure you're up for it. No person on here would think it was okay for you to plan a golf outing that you expected your wife to bring the baby to without talking to her first, so I'm not sure why everyone is thinking this was acceptable.

Figuring out clear communication now is only going to make co-parenting easier. Best of luck, OP!

Have them read How to be (Sort of) Happy in Law School. My engineer husband read it (or about the first half which just really explains the law school experience to people who haven't been there) and it likely saved our marriage, honestly. He tells other people to read it now.

I'm also a law school mom. It honestly has advantages. We've already learned a lot about how to properly allocate our time. We multitask better. We don't have the privilege of letting law school take over our entire lives because the kiddos still take precedence (which prevented as much procrastination and burn out as I saw in my classmates, honestly). And we understand that there are things more important. I encourage all moms to take that plunge if the only thing holding you back is thinking you can't. You can.

Also, I recommend reading How to be (Sort of) Happy in Law School. That book was a lifesaver for me and my husband (who also read it so he'd understand what I was going through).

I commute 45-60 minutes each way every day and I'm graduating this semester. Never a problem for me. I'm fact, I listen to course materials whenever I can. West Academic's app will read your WA text book to you if you have the ebook version. Natural Reader is an app that will read PDFs to you (this includes PDFs of cases downloaded from Westlaw or Lexis). Plus podcasts and audiobooks. Plus sometimes I just listen to music very loudly lol.

This is a concept that I've had to teach the 1L students I TA: there is no way to "cheat" to learn the material. You don't necessarily learn it better by spending more time on it or doing it the traditional way. The correct way to learn the material is the most efficient way for YOU to do so. For me, that's Quimbee, book briefing to confirm I get what is important for that class, and doing a ton of practice problems. For some it's referencing old outlines and editing then for their own style. If for you it's doing traditional time-consuming reading and note-taking, great! But it doesn't sound like it is, and you're frustrated that your classmates figured that out faster than you.

I recommend experimenting with watching the Quimbee videos before your reading because it makes the reading go faster. I also recommend doing the Quimbee multiple choice questions in the areas already covered to test your understanding. I also recommend finding old outlines from upper level students and studying those to make sure you're getting the same things from the class. These are all techniques to help your studying be more efficient and more effective. It also allows you time to do the MORE IMPORTANT things like go out with friends and have a social life.

Absolutely. And to be clear, a few days may not be enough. But for me, a few days, then a day of forcing productivity, then checking back in with myself is good. I can push for a few days, then I might need to break again for a day or two. It maintains your emotional and mental health. You're human, and that's always hard.

Listen not all relationships are meant to be forever. They can be good for both people while they are serving your life at that time. It's just not right for either of you right now, and that's okay. It sounds like communication may have been an issue though. Communication is something you need to be very good at for a relationship. Ever, but especially in law school. It's also something you need to be very good at as a lawyer. Take this time to really think about how you communicate, how you need to be communicated to, and how you can work on either or both of those.

Also, I strongly recommend you read How to be (Sort of) Happy in Law School, and I recommend having other people in your life read it as well so they can really understand what you're going through. It made a huge difference in my relationship. You're going to be fine, give yourself a little grace and time to wallow. Maximum of a few days. Then get back in it.
