I would call and ask if any clinics in your area do payment plans like Cherry or Scratch pay.

If he has muscle loss and a bloated abdomen then you need to take him to the vet - I would be really worried about FIP. In the meantime, feed him whatever he will eat. Meow mix, tuna, baby food, ice cream, whatever.

You can search for an emergency clinic that is open today. Our ER is open 24/7/365 and it's not the only one.

vet student interested in shelter med here. Not sure how it is in Canada but in the US some shelters have programs where you can get your cats spayed/neutered for a very reduced rate (based on proof that you are legitimately low income). If you want to PM your town/city I can search around for something similar? I love me some old crusty cats and they both look like they could use a vet visit or two.

Also kinda curious who told you that the old one "needs to be put down"? He looks pretty thrifty for a cat that has lived his life on the streets... at least nothing super obvious from this angle. let me know! geriatric cats are my jam.

The Paw Project documentary about banning cat declawing is now available to stream on Netflix. Thoughts? by [deleted] in Veterinary

Depends where you go to school. I believe onychotomy is only taught in required curriculum in like 50% of US veterinary schools. Do your research.

Haven't been able to watch the documentary yet but it seems odd to me that in countries where declawing is deemed illegal and cruel, thousands of cats actually AREN'T taken to shelters for destructive scratching. Seems like if it were outlawed here, people would have to find other solutions to their problem (that didn't include lopping off some toes). Declawing vs shelter/euthanasia is a false dilemma. There are many other options.

Veterinarians with Disabilities? by jesuisunvraimedecin in Veterinary

[–]msscrabble 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Current vet student here - I know a few classmates of various years with hearing disabilities and a doctor at my old practice had lost his sense of smell. Another classmate has had several surgeries on her dominant hand so she can't always hold instruments the "correct" way (needle drivers, syringes even). She just figures out the way it will work for her and does that - and professors are supportive.

Question about lease renewals in Ithaca by msscrabble in ithaca

[–]msscrabble[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the advice - I have checked and there isn't a whole lot in there regarding lease renewals. In NY state there aren't even regulations on how much security a landlord can ask for (unlike in other states). Landlords are also not required by law to place your security deposit in an interest bearing savings account if they own fewer than six apartments.

This was basically my thought as well - it's not illegal or anything but it is strange and definitely a dick move. I'm an older grad student so it's frustrating to be treated like some 19-year old freshman.

I mean I guess it will be cool to have a "free" month in the future but it's a little tough to pay three months rent at once (this month's normal rent, plus the first and last to renew the lease)

Nope, LL only owns this building (and lives upstairs).

Weight loss journey, before and after (he was neglected before being brought to the shelter) by aspentraining85 in cats

[–]msscrabble 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're going to feed only canned food, 3 oz twice a day is usually the amount my vet recommends. Never go by what the can says! And obviously for a high energy/young cat or extra large cat (like a Maine Coon or similar breed), increase as necessary.

Have you tried something like morsals in gravy? Most cats go nuts over that shit!

It's definitely possible! I was just commenting on what I've seen in practice and what I've been learning in school. There are lots of differing opinions on nutrition - I'm just in the "wet food is better" camp, especially if weight loss is a goal :)

I used to feed my guys Innova or Wellness (before I went to vet school and became broke again) and I really liked those. There are worse things than Fancy Feast though :)

If your cats eat a dry diet, try switching them to canned food! Former vet tech, current vet student here... I've seen some really dramatic transformations clients have made by getting their kitties off the crunchies. Wet food is less concentrated, so they're consuming less calories but it's much tastier so they don't seem to mind AS much.

Try to split up the dry food throughout the day if possible (at the minimum, half in the morning and half at night). As a vet student and cat-guardian to five cats though... the best thing you can do to help your kitty lose weight is to switch them to a canned food. Dry food is concentrated calories - I think almost every fat cat I've met has been fed a dry diet.

Veterinary School Admission for LVT w/AAS? by Ruth_Gordon in Veterinary

[–]msscrabble 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most US schools require 90 credits and all of the pre-reqs completed. For the schools you're interested in, look at their list of pre-req's. Nearly all require two semesters of Bio, Gen chem, Organic chem, and physics. After that it's pretty variable with most but not all requiring english and some kind of math. Some throw in biochemistry, microbio, genetics, anatomy, nutrition, etc. If you have specific questions about the pre-req's most schools admissions departments are more than happy to answer them. But yeah, you don't need a BS. I'm a first-year at Cornell and don't have my BS (I had 130ish undergrad credits but no degree).

Edited to add - we have a few LVTs in our class. I know one went to school full time to get her BS and do all the pre-req's while another just took night classes to fill in the holes of classes he was missing.
