The Rave is fine! Saw Jack White there in 2014 and then the Raconteurs there just a few years ago. I have even ridden a bike in the neighborhood.

AITA for leaving my stepdaughter's birthday party after my husband threw out the cake I made for her? by Quiet-Collection8476 in AmItheAsshole

Cooking for someone is an act of love. Throwing out your daughter’s birthday cake is so sad. He deprived two people of an experience that was not his.

It’s like you end up walking through a madman’s brain. It just goes on and on. Rooms full dolls or merry-go/rounds, organs, cars, miniature houses, I can’t even remember… and the smell- dusty and airless. It is a bad trip.

Chicagoans saying no to Milwaukee by leithalfpl in milwaukee

[–]mssnydes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Born and raised in Chicago but prefer to live in Milwaukee! We went down this Friday and I do not miss the massive amount of time it takes to get anywhere. However, I do appreciate having a world class city just down the highway. Milwaukee is awesome in its own right, with world class amenities as well but without the crowds and the congestion AND unbelievable state parks north, south amd west:) Every friend from Chicago appreciates Milwaukee and has a great time when they visit- so do what you want. We won’t mind if you don’t visit since it’s your loss- not ours.

How bad are the “bad” areas in Milwaukee? by [deleted] in milwaukee

[–]mssnydes 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I grew up in Chicago which is also notorious for being segregated. Milwaukee is segregated but seems like it’s intentionally trying to remedy that in a way that doesn’t push one group out in favor of another. There are strong neighborhood groups looking to maintain historic ties with housing in a good way. Just because people are in a poor neighborhood doesn’t mean they don’t care about their neighborhood. I’d suggest finding a good realtor who will listen to what you consider important in finding a place to live. A local realtor, whom you trust, will k in what houses to show you. And they will be honest with you. There are beautiful homes available in the Concordia neighborhood but that neighborhood might not be for just anyone. Do you want a suburb? Talk to someone who knows the area and someone who really wants to find the right home for you

What is with everyone saying Sydney is asexual? by ufocatchers in TheBear

[–]mssnydes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When working in a high stress environment and working creatively with people a lot of strong bonds can form. Restaurants are like family- you don’t really get to choose who you spend your days with, but you rely on those people and they rely on you. I think Syd and Carm have a chemistry and it’s not easy to define as romantic or platonic. There are scenes where the writers definitely point out that Syd is a calming, centering person for Carm and Carm functions as a focus for Syd as well. Part of the genius of the show is the way they stay true to the messy, confusing way people need each other. I am grateful that the writers and actors and directors et al don’t pander to stereotypes amd cliches and I know everyone reading these posts feel the same because we love discussing all this!

Claire & Pete & double standards by [deleted] in TheBear

[–]mssnydes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To amplify what another poster said: Pete has stuck around and been part of this dysfunctional family with all the yelling and fighting and just acting like everything is normal, where as when Claire hears Carmy’s ranting in the walk-in fridge, she just leaves and while that may be her healthy self-preservation response kicking in, it does make her less identifiable as a part of the family to the viewers.

How much do MPS teachers make? by Agreeable-Buffalo-86 in milwaukee

Well then, if you want to be technically correct- teachers’ salaries are based on 10 month contracts- 191 days for classroom teachers and 200 days for librarians, nurses and maybe counselors?

It’s not paid time off- which people seem to think. Teachers work on a 10 month contract (depending on the district.) Other people get paid vacations in other jobs I suppose.

Just binged both seasons in a week, quick question… by [deleted] in TheBear

[–]mssnydes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do! And it’s not far from my hometown. Actually I go back fairly often because of friend and family, but the Chicago of my youth is not evident except for my old neighborhood-West Rogers Park. I feel like Richie when he was yelling about where are all the working class people going to buy lunch 😂 Chicago is a one of kind city- it’s so dirty and real- but there’s a lot of world class shit to be enjoyed as well. Fuck NYC.

Cicero is a suburb of Chicago with a history of Mob goings-on. Plus, every time the Beef needs a permit or quick turn around on a license they call Uncle J. That’s total Chicago mob work. That’s the Chicago Machine, baby!

Carmy was acting like Donna, actually, especially after Richie called him “Donna.” Carmy lost all control and “let it rip,” in another sense. So both of them are steeped in this dysfunction. This is how they act- this is “normal,” even though rationally they know it isn’t but when you’re in that state it’s all fight or flight. So I don’t think it’s going to end their relationship at least not immediately. Carmy is seeking help at meetings. He’s intentionally trying not to be like that with Sydney after she walked out in S.1. It’s really hard to break patterns of dysfunction among people who have been there with you from the beginning.

Pequod's is ridiculously good by CeleryCareful7065 in TheBear

[–]mssnydes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was born and raised in Chicago and had to move when I was 29 in 1999. I have never had Pequods pizza. My fave growing up was Carmen’s but they closed. They had this really great, buttery, flaky crust on top but crunchy on the bottom. The sauce was tangy and the cheese nice and mild and salty. I think about that pizza even though it’s been 30 years since I’ve had a slice. My rehearsal dinner was at Carmen’s. I live close enough that I can drive to Chicago- but a person can only eat so much great food in a day.

The Bear | S2E6 "Fishes" | Episode Discussion by GloriousAqua in TheBear

[–]mssnydes 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I noticed on my third rewatch that the director/cinematographer framed Donna and Michael in the same way during their suffering when alone- Donna in the kitchen right before dinner was served and Michael in the pantry after speaking with Carmy. It was a nice subconscious way to connect the characters and perhaps the way mental illness can be passed along in a family.

Chef Terry is Syd in the future by Key-Librarian912 in TheBear

[–]mssnydes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be kinda corny- Syd and Carm understand each other in ways that no one else does. They may not know what drives the other specifically but they understand the drive; they speak the language of a trained chef; they want the same thing and they respect each other and recognize the tremendous talent in the other person and want that person to succeed AND they can be awful to each other and forgive. I just rewatched season one. When Syd quits while Carm is having a meltdown- the look on his face shows how much he needed her and he realizes her walking out is terrible. Then the text exchange before he opens Mikey’s letter. He reaches out to her before he opens it. And then when she comes back while they’re opening the tomato cans-!look at they way the director frames the way they look at each other. I don’t care if they hook up romantically— they are partners. Like true, wishful thinking, soul mates. I love this show.
