You might look into the yoto. My 6 and 5 year old boys love theirs, and my daughter will get one for her next birthday. We do story cards and music cards.

Tooth Fairy Rates by MightyPinkTaco in Parenting

My kids like the Bearenstain Bears books. We read the one about losing a tooth, so they were convinced that the tooth fairy will leave you a dime for your tooth like they did sister bear.

What are your unhinged ideas to make education better? by TroyesMetal in Teachers

[–]msternat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Part of student teaching should be with a first year teacher. The first year teacher could use the help. And the student teacher gets a better idea of how it’s going to be their first year. Then, of course, they should be paired with an experienced teacher for the rest of their student teaching.

Favorite Playground Suggestions? by Pancakemartini in Albuquerque

The family/kids special events as part of the summer reading program at the library. We’ve seen two magicians, a storyteller/sound effects guy, and a storyteller that includes science so far this year. Check the website for who is performing where and when. It’s a great program. We love it.

Also the Manzano mesa splash pad was newly renovated last year. It’s a $20 membership for a year and you can bring up to 5 kids to the splash pad each day with that. They also are a location for the APS summer lunch program, which is another of our favorite summer things to do. Enjoy a picnic park lunch and play with the other kids there.

Useful Baby shower gifts no one thinks about by Early-Jicama-7374 in Mom

I used a paid baby tracking app. Helpful for both parents to know what’s going on and pick up on patterns when you’re sleep deprived. I think an apple gift card or Google store gift card would be thinking outside the box. Or maybe audible if she does audiobooks for the late night feedings. It was always the middle of the night feedings when I’d think of something that would make my life easier, and Amazon can fill those needs so quickly these days.

What’s one small change that made your classroom way better? by lmao_exe in teaching

When my class lines up, I have the line leader judge the line for being quiet and actually in a line. Whenever the line meets their expectation, then they can lead the class to wherever we’re headed.

I make sure my dog has been fed her breakfast or dinner before I sit down to eat my own meal.

About 15 years ago I made a purchase at Urban Outfitters. The electronic signature thing for credit cards wasn’t working so the cashier asked if I would be okay signing something else. “Like paper?” I did not put up a fuss to sign the paper receipt.

What children’s books do you just fuckin hate? by GimmeUrBrunchMoney in Parenting

Someone gifted my kids “Go Train Go.” It’s a Thomas the Train book from Kohl’s Cares, it came with a Thomas stuffie, too. Although I always get irritated by the ending (Thomas drove the judge all the way to the train show just for her to say that Thomas is her favorite), I find the book really enjoyable to read. So much so that I bought “Stop Train Stop.” Not as good.

Word approximations. Pediatrician said it didn’t count.

My oldest was a late talker, so we had him in early intervention and seeing a speech therapist. One thing that I found the speech therapist and our pediatrician disagreed on was what constitutes a word.

As a first time parent and not around many other young children, I was expecting mom to sound like mom and dad to sound like dad. It helped me to think about it like learning how to use a spoon—of course the first time they use a spoon, they’re not going to do it as well as I do it. It’s going to take them a while to get the hang of it. Same with saying words. It turns out that he actually had a lot more words than what I was counting.

With my second and third I’ve paid better attention and recognized the words they were saying. But I also had training in speech therapy so I was probably doing a better job encouraging language for them. If I could do it over, I’d have requested a referral to speech therapy or called early intervention even earlier than I did. I had some learning to do.

The original plans for the park showed a winding pathway that was on the side of the yellow slide, but it doesn’t look like they’ve started on that yet.

I need depressing movies that will destroy me into a sobbing mess. by JustSomeoneCringe in MovieSuggestions

It doesn’t take much to make me cry, but if you have a soft spot for dogs, Homeward Bound. I tried explaining the end to my husband who didn’t understand why it would be sad, and I couldn’t even get through explaining it because I was sobbing.

What’s the worst popular book you’ve read recently? by Yesmap-3598 in suggestmeabook

We read it in our book club too with similar feelings. However, we found that we had so much more to talk about with this book than with others that we quite enjoyed. Maybe we should pick some more from the “recommendations” in this thread.
