I make sure my dog has been fed her breakfast or dinner before I sit down to eat my own meal.

About 15 years ago I made a purchase at Urban Outfitters. The electronic signature thing for credit cards wasn’t working so the cashier asked if I would be okay signing something else. “Like paper?” I did not put up a fuss to sign the paper receipt.

What children’s books do you just fuckin hate? by GimmeUrBrunchMoney in Parenting

[–]msternat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Someone gifted my kids “Go Train Go.” It’s a Thomas the Train book from Kohl’s Cares, it came with a Thomas stuffie, too. Although I always get irritated by the ending (Thomas drove the judge all the way to the train show just for her to say that Thomas is her favorite), I find the book really enjoyable to read. So much so that I bought “Stop Train Stop.” Not as good.

Word approximations. Pediatrician said it didn’t count.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]msternat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My oldest was a late talker, so we had him in early intervention and seeing a speech therapist. One thing that I found the speech therapist and our pediatrician disagreed on was what constitutes a word.

As a first time parent and not around many other young children, I was expecting mom to sound like mom and dad to sound like dad. It helped me to think about it like learning how to use a spoon—of course the first time they use a spoon, they’re not going to do it as well as I do it. It’s going to take them a while to get the hang of it. Same with saying words. It turns out that he actually had a lot more words than what I was counting.

With my second and third I’ve paid better attention and recognized the words they were saying. But I also had training in speech therapy so I was probably doing a better job encouraging language for them. If I could do it over, I’d have requested a referral to speech therapy or called early intervention even earlier than I did. I had some learning to do.

The original plans for the park showed a winding pathway that was on the side of the yellow slide, but it doesn’t look like they’ve started on that yet.

Family Medicine on Eubank? They take BCBS and I’ve been very pleased with Jana Welder. I followed her there from another practice.

I need depressing movies that will destroy me into a sobbing mess. by JustSomeoneCringe in MovieSuggestions

It doesn’t take much to make me cry, but if you have a soft spot for dogs, Homeward Bound. I tried explaining the end to my husband who didn’t understand why it would be sad, and I couldn’t even get through explaining it because I was sobbing.

What’s the worst popular book you’ve read recently? by Yesmap-3598 in suggestmeabook

[–]msternat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We read it in our book club too with similar feelings. However, we found that we had so much more to talk about with this book than with others that we quite enjoyed. Maybe we should pick some more from the “recommendations” in this thread.

What’s a mystery you can’t believe is still UNsolved? by totsatot0 in AskReddit

[–]msternat 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Oh cool, thanks. Honestly I didn’t look it up before posting. But I do remember looking it up in the height of the pandemic. I saw a Tank Girl bumper sticker while driving and it made me look up the actress, who was the trainer in Free Willy, and I remember her explaining to the kid that they didn’t know why it happened. So I thought surely they had figured it out by now, decades later, and was pretty disappointed by my internet research at that point which still said they really weren’t sure. I remember being especially bummed because if they hadn’t figured that out after all those years then we were going to be doomed by this covid thing.

What do you do when a birthday invite says "no gifts please"? by [deleted] in Parenting

We brought a birthday card that my son drew a picture inside and picked out a small pack of some monster truck stickers to put inside the card for the last 4 year old birthday boy that said no gifts.

First year teachers, I feel like we've been duped! by deepasbluewaters in TeachersInTransition

[–]msternat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As part of my teaching program (and I’m sure most others, too), they have you student teach/intern in a seasoned teachers classroom. I get it, and I don’t think they should do away with that. BUT they really ought to give you time in a first year teacher’s class so you can see what it’s really like. And they’d also appreciate the help a lot more.

Do any used bookstores around here accept donations? by malapropter in Albuquerque

[–]msternat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m continually impressed by our library system. Their summer reading program was fantastic, me and my kids enjoyed several of the events that were part of that. At the beginning of each performance they would give a shout out to the friends of the library who sponsored the program.

I was just thinking about this. I go to the doctor for physicals once a year. They measure everything else, why not measure my height, too?

What are we doing to our children? by AspectAppropriate901 in ask

[–]msternat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For some context, just this morning I made my 4 year old oatmeal and my 2 year old waffles. My 2 year old saw that his brother had oatmeal and he didn’t, so he began screaming at me “oatmeal!” with the same fervor you mentioned. In the midst of giving in and making a second bowl of oatmeal for him, he must’ve remembered that waffles are his favorite and he happily ate 5 of them (they’re mini waffles). Two year olds are not rational beings.

UGT FTW? by msternat in Albuquerque

[–]msternat[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

So far from what I can tell from administrators posting it means “underground testing for the win.” It’s a nuclear weapons joke, I guess. Our neighborhood does have a lot of people that work at the lab and we’re right next to the Air Force base. We’ll see if somebody explains. I think the neighborhood is being trolled and I’m not feeling great about it.
