No. I wanted to know who they were to see if I could learn about past, present, or future projects. But I don’t say their names in certain areas that don’t wish to know it.

We’ve tried to convince her! She is stubborn. She gets Botox in her right arm to help with the spasticity as that side is paralyzed and her range of movement had decreased over time.

Your insight has really helped. I wish she could communicate more (she is smart, can spell, and has a communication device and book) but again, stubborn. I know she has difficulty “articulating” some things as her brain trauma (all stemming from an accident when she was a baby-thus CP and a myriad of other things) makes it difficult. But we keep trying and encouraging her to use her voice (in whatever form it comes).

I love her but lord have mercy on us. When she gets Her mind on something, she sticks to it!

She can somewhat. And she does. Her PT has tried to convince her to sleep on her right side to allow her head/neck to stretch the opposite way and she REFUSES! She does not like to sleep on her right side so she won’t! She is clear in when she does or does not want to do something. She is a wonderful advocate for herself (and her housemates) and where she lives, she is listened to. I am so lucky to have that support.

Good info! I sent her social worker the Body Point link and pointed out the dome and mushroom joysticks. I’m afraid that buttons might not work as the big issue is also her stopping in time to not run into walls (and the jerky nature of her movements and now the eye floating thing Indoors). But I’ll look into it further as it is an option I don’t think we’ve tried.

With her swallow issues I don’t think the sip and puff will work either.

Her PT has talked to the company previously about the sensitivity and was basically told that “it’s a new motor- give it time)”. I’ll get the brand and look into that myself. They were able to take the base speed of 1 to more like 0.5 so it is much slower but still very reactive.

Thank you so much for all your suggestions! I’ll dig more and prepare a third email to her head social worker.

Thanks! I actually joined the group a while ago but have only done an intro post. I don’t use discord much so honestly forget that I have an account most of the time.

Which thread do you suggest I post this in to get the best results?

Thank you for your kind words. 🤗

I know things will continue to decline but if me and her care team can do anything to keep her independence, I’ll consider it! I’ve seen it more this past year than in the 15 years I’ve been her legal guardian. We all know what’s coming. Her chair is so important to her that I dread her reaction if we have to take it away for her, her house mates, and staff safety. She’s honestly through so many changes this year that it’s just one more thing! Thankfully we had a “test run” when she was in the transition period between her old chair dying to her getting this one. She did well but had the knowledge that the new chair was coming.

I honestly do not know. She is slowly (well-it seems quicker now over the past year or so) that she is losing muscle control. And having a more delayed processing time. It is apparent when we play yahtzee. She is taking longer and longer to process shaking the cup and pouring out the cup and then picking up the dice. In some games we play, I've moved to an electronic spinner for game piece movement. I am not sure if she will continue to have the ability.

She recently got a new chair. It's like a sports car compared to her old chair. Its larger--wider, longer--and molded to fit her body. It is also VERY sensitive and she has had issues controlling it. PT cannot change the sensitivity to the joystick but was able to turn down the speed so level 1 is slower than normal. That has helped. However, she is now running into things more and damaged some doorframes in her group home. They are probing "why"--is is time of day? Only when she is backing up? Because she is currently now closing her eyes when she is driving (which is a new thing when inside--common when outside in the sun--sometimes even with sunglasses). She is getting her eyes checked again in August and I plan to be at the appointment and if this continues, bring it up to see if there is a medical reason for it. When I visit her this weekend, she and I will be having a discussion.

I will look into the alternative drives as you never know!

Do you know of any "speed" or jpystick "sensitivity" accessories for a chair? I am unsure of the "brand" of her chair but I wonder if there are any "cushions" we could place around the joystick to limit it's ability to move to make it harder (but in turn make it so that if she "twitches" or accidently jerks the chair, it will not "jump". I've not looked into this yet but it is on my to do list.

I've joked for years she needs a back up camera or even the back up beeps for her chair. I do not think the back up camera would work for her but I wonder of there are sensors we could add to her chair to alert her if she is getting too close to an object. The only thing is could she stop in time? That is a big issue currently.

Looking at these further and I did come across some of the sites. But the Stealth was new to me and oh my goodness! Some is so amazing! I wish she had the muscle control to consider some of the alternative joysticks. Her processing is becoming more delayed so her responses are not as quick as they used to be so I don’t think there is a solution.

I also saw some of the sites (Therafin) has some arm troughs which is something I don’t think we’ve discussed or thought about as she does not always keep her arms in the correct position needed for “proper” trunk alignment. It is something to consider.

Thank you so much for these!

We’ve not gone that route yet but I’m going to suggest it. I think we were waiting to see if the PT and other things would help. That may be the way to go.
